Unpaved forest roads are common accessways in mountain areas being used for forestry purposes. The presence of forest roads produces large volumes of surface runoff and sediment yield due to changes in soil properties and hillslope profile. Rainfall simulation experiments were conducted to estimate the impacts of above-ground vegetation and antecedent soil water condition on hydrology and sediment processes. A total of 9 small plots($1m{\times}0.5m$) were installed to represent different road surface conditions: no-vegetation(3 plots), vegetated surface(3 plots), and cleared vegetation surface(3 plots). Experiments were carried out on dry, wet, and very wet soil moisture conditions for each plot. Above ground parts of vegetation on road surface influenced significantly on surface runoff. Runoff from no-vegetation roads(39.24L) was greater than that from vegetated(25.05L), while cleared-vegetation condition is similar to no-vegetation roads(39.72L). Runoff rate responded in a similar way to runoff volume. Soil erosion was also controlled by land cover, but the magnitude is little than that of surface runoff. Even though slight differences among antecedent soil moisture conditions were found on both runoff and soil erosion, runoff rate and soil losses were increased in very wet condition, followed by wet condition. The experiments suggest that vegetation cover on forest road surface seems most effective way to reduce surface runoff and soil erosion during storm periods.

This study was conducted to find end-members and tracers which are effective to be applied in the End Member Mixing Analysis (EMMA) model for runoff separation at the Gwangneung coniferous forest catchment (13.6ha), Gyeonggido, Korea. We monitored three successive rainfall events during two weeks from June 26, 2005 to July 10, 2005, and analysed chemical properties of rainfall, throughfall, stemflow, groundwater and soil water considered as main components of storm runoff. The followings are the results of analyses of each component and tracer. Groundwater, soil water and rainfall (or throughfall) were dominant runoff components. Rainfall and groundwater were selected as main components for the two components-one tracer mixing model, and groundwater, soilwater and throughfall were selected as main components for the three components-two tracers mixing model. Tracers were selected from anion ($Cl^-$ and ${SO_4}^{2-}$), cation ($Na^+$, $K^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, and $Ca^{2+}$) and Acid Neutralizing Capacity (ANC) in event 1, 2, and 3. $Na^+$, $Ca^{2+}$ and ANC were selected in the two components-one tracer mixing model and ${SO_4}^{2-}-K^+$, ${SO_4}^{2-}-Na^+$, ${SO_4}^{2-}-Ca^{2+}$, ${SO_4}^{2-}$-ANC, and $Ca^{2+}$-ANC were selected in the three components-two tracers mixing model. Selected main runoff components and tracers can provide basic information to determine the contribution rate of each runoff component and identify the runoff process in a forest watershed.

To understand the difference of runoff discharge processes between Gwangneung deciduous and coniferous forest catchments, we collected hydrological data (e.g., precipitation, soil moisture, runoff discharge) and conducted hydrochemical analyses in the deciduous and coniferous forest catchments in Gwangneung National Arboretum in the northwest part of South Korea. Based on the end-member mixing analysis of the three storm events during the summer monsoon in 2005, the hillslope runoff in the deciduous forest catchment was higher 20% than the coniferousforest catchment during the firststorm event. Howerver, hillslope runoff increased from the second storm event in the coniferous catchment. We conclude that low soil water contents and topographical gradient characteristics highly influence runoff in the coniferous forest catchment during the first storm events. In general, coniferous forests are shown high interception loss and low soil moisture compared to the deciduous forests. It may also be more likely to be a reduction in soil porosity development when artificial coniferous forests reduced soil biodiversity. The forest soil porosity is an important indicator to determine the water recharge of the forest. Therefore, in order to secure the water resources, it should be managed coniferous forests for improving soil biodiversity and porosity.

This study was carried out to investigate coefficient and exponent of runoff energy in MUSLE for small forest watershed, Hwachoen watershed in Gangwon-do. For 15 rainfall events, runoff volume, peak discharge and sediment yield were measured and these data were used to calculate coefficient and exponent of runoff energy. The results of this study showed that $LS{\bullet}K{\bullet}C{\bullet}P$ factors of MUSLE were affected by slope steepness. The coefficient and exponent of runoff energy were validated with coefficient of efficiency of 0.92 and these values were suggested to 0.002 and 0.81 respectively. The comparison of the coefficients and exponents between Hwacheon and other forest watersheds showed that these values would reflect the effect of forest management within watershed.

The purpose of this study were to monitor rainfall and runoff data from paddy blocks and forest areas at the Balan Experimental Watershed, and to investigate the variations of runoff characteristics with different land use. Field data showed that the total runoff from paddies and forest areas are not significantly different in volume. The peak discharge from forest areas was less than that from paddies for lighter storms, but became greater for heavier storms. The results demonstrate that paddies play an important role to reduce peak discharge from heavy storms as compared to forest.

Rainfall and runoff data from a forested watershed and irrigated rice paddies at the Bal-an experimental watershed were monitored and analyzed to investigate the variations of runoff characteristics with different land use. The comparisons were conducted fourteen storm events ranging 21.8∼190.2 mm of rainfall. Field data showed that direct runoff from paddies and forested watershed are not significantly different in volume. The peak discharge from forest watershed was less than that from paddies far lighter storms, but became greater fur heavier storms. The peak runoff from the forest watershed was 39 percent greater than from the paddies. The results demonstrate that paddies play an important role to reduce peak discharge from heavy storms as compared to forest.

The objective of this study is to estimate the flood runoff for three guaged stations within Namgang-Dam watershed which are operated by KWATER. For a flood runoff simulation, HEC-HMS was applied and the simulated runoff was compared with observed from 2004 to 2008. The watershed area of Sancheong, Shinan, and Changchon were 693.6 $km^2$, 413.4 $km^2$, and 346.48 $km^2$, respectively. The average runoff ratio of observed runoff for three watersheds were 0.725, 0.418, and 0.586, respectively. The dominant land cover of three watersheds are forest with the value of 71.6 %, 73.1 %, and 82.0 %. Three different cases according to the potential maximum retention of forest areas for calculating the curve number were applied to decrease the error between the simulated and observed. The simulated peak runoff of case 3 which applied the 90 % of potential maximum retention of curve number which is equivalent to AMCI for all the AMCI, AMCII, and AMCIII conditions showed least root mean square error (RMSE). The case 1, which was suggested by previous study, showed high discrepancy between the simulated and observed. Since the forest area consists of more than 70 % for all three watersheds, the application of curve number for forest is critical to improve the estimation errors. Further research is required to estimate the more accurate curve number for forest area.
In Juam basin, the ratio of non-point pollution source among pollutant loading of basin was significantly high, since the utilization level of land was high. In addition, the most pollutants were not treated and flowed out. In this study, the correlation between non-point source pollutants from the forest area and increasing algae was investigated. 1. Chl-a concentration flowed out to runoff from forest area and stream water was low as $0.1{\sim}20.3{\mu}g/{\ell}$ and $0.1{\sim}9.3{\mu}g/{\ell}$, respectively, and chl-a concentration ($0.1{\sim}28.5{\mu}g/{\ell}$) of branch stream was higher $5{\sim}7$ times than that of runoff from forest area. 2. In correlation between runoff from forest area and Juam lake water, annual chl-a concentration of area front Juam dam was higher twice than forest area. 3. In runoff from forest area within Juam basin, flagellate, green, diatom and blue algae occupied $33.0{\sim}41.7%$, $22.2{\sim}30.8%$, $17.3{\sim}22.5%$ and $13.7{\sim}17.6%$, respectively. 4. In runoff from forest area, both green and diatom algae were maintained constantly irrespectively of season, and flagellate algae dominated since August. 5. In characteristics by forest tree types, four types algae were inhabited in mixed forest, and flagellate algae were higher in conifer and broadleaf forest than in other area. And green algae in herbaceous forest were higher than other area.

The purpose of this study was to develop the Rainfall-Runoff Model for a long and short term runoff analysis in small forested mountain watersheds. This model was derived from tank model. This model is composed of four tank. Tank I, Tank II, TankIII, and TankIV represent interception loss in forest canopy, direct runoff, base flow, and surface flow component, respectively. This model was tested with two experimental watersheds, located in southern part of Korea. As the result, this model had potentials for simulating and analyzing the long and short term runoff in small forested watersheds.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes of surface runoff by comparisons between burned and unburned area after forest fire. The amount of surface runoff in burned area was more high 1.72 times in the year of fire, 1.44 times in one year later, 1.38 times in five years later and 1.16 times in ten years later than those of unburned area. Therefore, surface runoff in the burned area almost tended to be stabilized like unburned area ten year later after forest fire. The most affecting factors on the amount of surface runoff in burned and unburned area were number of unit rainfall, number of rainfall accumulated and unit rainfall. But coverage was shown to mitigate the amount of surface runoff in burned and unburned area.
