  • Three periods of land-use maps of the Suomo Basin were drawn from topographic maps (1970a) and Landsat TM/ETM images (1986a and 1999a). The area of each kind of land use was calculated from the three maps. From 1970 to 1999, the area of forestland decreased 17%, the area of sparse forestland increased 8%, and the area of grassland increased 10%. The transferring trend of the land-use is that forestland turned into sparse forestland and brush land, and the brush land degenerated into grassland based on the transferring matrixes from 1970 to 1986, and from 1986 to 1999. According to the local government record and statistical data, forest cover rate had been increasing from 1970 to 1998, but the amount of growing stock had been declining. From 1957 to 1998, the amount of growing stock declined from 423m$^3$/ha to 177m$^3$/ha.

  • In order to improve the transformation efficiency of zoysiagrass by increasing the frequency of callus formation from mature seeds and plant regeneration, the effect of pre-treatment with sea sand was examined. Mature zoysiagrass seeds were given 10 min of swelling time before sea sand treatment using a sea sand and seed ratio of 1 : 1 and a vortex shaking speed of 6 (1,000 rpm) for 10 min. The seeds showed increased callus formation that was more than 2 times the rate in the control. In addition, plant regeneration efficiency was also increased when embryogenic callus induced from sea sand-treated mature seeds was cultured in regeneration medium. These results will be very helpful for improving the genetic transformation frequency of zoysiagrass, a recalcitrant monocot grass.

  • The grassland establishment under the forest become important, but it comes with a shade for the grass growing among trees. The objective of this study is to select the proper grass-clover mixtures to several shading degrees. The grass-clover mixtures were grown under full sunlights and shade cloths, which reduce sunlight intensity by 35, 50 and 75%. The various types of mixtures were allocated at each shading degrees with three replications. The productivity of mixtures was the highest under full sunlights, and intermediate with 35% degree of shading and least with both 50 and 75% degrees of shading. The 1st mixture (orchardgrass+tall fescue+Kentucky bluegrass+ladino clover+perennial ryegrass+timothy) showed the greatest yield in all treatments. The crude protein (CP) concentration of all mixtures increased with the higher degree of shading, but no CP concentration difference was observed in mixtures within same degree of shading. The lowest neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) concentrations and highest relative feed value (RFV) were resulted in the 1st mixture in all treatments. This study indicates that tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, ladino clover, perennial ryegrass and timothy can be used as components for mixtures with orchardgrass which is major component for forest-pastures.

  • Soil loss and runoff were investigated in a small watershed located in Sangeo-ri, Yeoju-eup, Yeoju-gun, Kyonggi-do. The watershed with the area of 35 ha consists of forest, grassland, uplands and mulberry. V-notch type water tank. flow-meter, automatic water sampler and rain gauge were installed at the main outlet stream. Out of $1.037.9Mg\;35ha^{-1}$ of total annual rainfall. 17.9% was lost via run-off. The total amount of soil eroded was $152.2Mg\;35ha^{-1}$, of which $78.6Mg\;35ha^{-1}$ was suspended load and $73.6Mg\;35ha^{-1}$ ha was sediment load. The soil losses under different land uses were $16.02Mg\;ha^{-1}$ for upland annual Crops. $2.69Mg\;ha^{-1}$ for mulberry field, $0.58Mg\;ha^{-1}$ for grassland and $0.55Mg\;ha^{-1}$ for forest. The predicted soil loss by Universal Soil Loss Equation was approximately 20% underestimated in forest, grassland and uplands, and 32% underestimated in mulberry field.

  • The purpose of this study was to research the change of the forest in Myungseo-lee Sanchuk-myun, Chungju where most of the area managed the Swidden Agriculture(Shifting cultivation). The mountainous district should be used and developed the multi-purposing source among the agricultural field, grassland, forest, a recreational area, and an industrial site, and should be presupposed the establishment of synthetic and efficient change system. This study began to pay attention to observe the peculiarity of Swidden Agricultural area in terms of forest aspects and to broaden the outlook of Swidden Agriculture. In the status of Myungseo-lee, prior to the Project to Rehabilitate the Illegal Swidden, from 1973 to 1976, the private forest gets 110.9ha (23ha for Seodae-village, 26ha for Dooduk-village, 6ha for Myungdol-village, 41ha for Chungam-village, 14.9ha for Pangdae-village). In Myungseo-lee. millet and corn were harvested, and they performed the rotation of planting and temporary resting by changing the field. The cultivated acreage per a house of total 5 villages in Myungseo-lee was just 0.4ha in average. The 70ha of the Swidden in Dooduk-village. Myungseo-lee, was sold to the Miwon corp. and the 342ha of that in Myungseo-lee was sold to Seohae-devlp.(SK forest). Those areas afforested. As the regulation plan for the Swidden began, the people in the site got paid for 300,000won as a migration fee. The special feature of the Swidden in Myungseo-lee was that the whole migration village was already established before the regulation plan for the Swidden began, and the yield was harvested by more than other villages the use of chemical fertilizer. And, in the Swidden agriculture, it showed the well-cultivated aspect, and the major harvest was various grains. The regulation Swidden in Myungseo-lee started in 1974.

  • The typical natural landscapes and temporal- spatial regulation of Land use change and their ecological effects at Hailun County were conducted and analyzed, based on the translated data from remote sensing images in 1986, 1996 and 2000 using GIS and landscape ecological theory. The results indicated the area of arable land, paddy field and city land increased 7,786.39 $hm^2$, 3391.18 $hm^2$ and 120.84 $hm^2$ while the area of forestry, grassland and marsh decreased 3,184.88 $hm^2$, 1,625.8 $hm^2$ and 3,994.85 $hm^2$ respectively during 14 years. Dry land is a main landscape in this area. These changes made the environmental quality worse gradually, such as land degradation, soil erosion and water and soil losses, and temperature getting warmer. This study is very important for the local ecological environment protect and agricultural sustainability and land resources sustainable using.

  • The present study was conducted with the object of measuring sensibility image through an experiment with human bodies and indexing human feelings according to land cover types. The temperature by land cover types formed the lowest temperature in planted areas and the highest temperature in paved areas. The wind velocity is stronger in bare grounds, the surface of water and building areas than planted areas, grassland and paved areas. In the case of using a globe thermometer, a solar controled device confirmed the planted areas. In summer, an increase of thermal sensation are indicated a decrease of amenity, and the sensation which has high correlationship is in order by amenity, thermal sensation, airflow sensation and humidity sensation.

  • New species of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (Glomeromycota), Acaulospora jejuensis, was isolated from rhizosphere soils of Miscanthus sinensis in the grassland in Jeju Island of Korea. The species was identified using the morphological characteristics of the spores and the molecular phylogenetic analysis using partial DNA sequences from small subunit rDNA (SSU), internal transcribed spacer (ITS), and large subunit rDNA (LSU). Phylogenetic analysis placed the fungal species in a distinct clade within genus Acaulospora. Also, the species exhibited the morphological characteristics distinct from the other members of the genus. Therefore, Acaulospora jejuensis was described as a novel species from Korea.
