The plot design influences the budgets and the precision of forest inventory results. The objective of this study is to determine the efficiency of estimating forest variables such as tree density, basal area, volume, and species richness based on various plot sizes using fixed-area plot sampling in the natural deciduous forest of Pyeong-Chang County, Gang-won Province, Korea. In this study, 108 reference plots were established with a fixed plot size and shape of 0.09 ha ($30m{\times}30m$). In order to determine the optimal plot size for the interest of variables, each sample plot was established using different shapes (square, circle, and rectangle) and was divided into different plot sizes from 100 to $900m^2$. The mean relative difference (MRD) for the sum of the basal area and volume, and tree density per hectare decreased as plot size increased. But the MRD for three variables were only below 13% at the plot size of $500m^2$. Species richness for each reference stand observed ranging from 2 to 15 species, demonstrated highly positive significant relationships with plot size. The minimum plot size for the estimation of tree density, the sum of the BA and volume was determined to be about $400m^2$, whereas the estimation of species richness required a minimum plot size of $500m^2$.

We investigated structure and intensity of 267 echolocation calls that were collected from the five Korean Myotis species (M. nettereri, M. petax, M. ikonnikovi, M. macrodactylus and M. formosus). All the Myotis species produced typical FM call pattern with similar echolocation call shapes and outer shapes, producing steep, downward frequency-modulated calls. A pulse has two harmonies, which consist of the first harmony with wider bandwidth and the second harmony with narrower bandwidth. The PF of the first harmony is higher than that of the second harmony. The typical FM call structure, with two harmonies and wide bandwidth, might be highly related to fast flying and wide screening in the dense forests. In classification of the echolocation calls by DFA, most of calls from the five species could be well correctly classified. All calls of M. nettereri (100% of 17 calls), M. formosus (95.5% of 22 calls) and M. ikonnikovi (85.7% of 70 calls) could be well discriminated from those of the other species, whereas calls of M. petax and M. macrodactylus could be discriminated by 70.4% of 98 calls and 76.7% of 60 calls, respectively. Our results indicate that the five Korean Myotis species can be well identified by the echolocation calls with high correct classification by DFA.

Two new records of Scleroderma species from South Korea are described here. Comprehensive taxonomic studies of Scleroderma specimens were conducted at the Korea National Arboretum. Based on morphological and molecular data (fungal barcode sequences), two new records (S. laeve and S. nastii) were confirmed. Herein, morphological descriptions, including Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images of basidiospore ornamentation, and a taxonomic key of Korean Scleroderma species are provided.
This study aimed to investigate habitat distribution and beetle diversity, using beetles as biological indicator species to assess environmental changes in the Mt. Mangunsan area near the South Sea of Korea. Plots were installed at varying elevations on the southern and northern slopes of Mt. Mangunsan, and the beetle species composition was determined. A total of 1,368 beetles comprising 32 species belonging to ten families were collected between May and September 2023 from the study sites in the Mt. Mangunsan area near the South Sea of Korea. The two most prevalent species consisted of Synuchus nitidus, with 152 collected beetles, and Calosoma chinense, with 128 collected beetles. In May, June, July, August, and September, 76 beetles comprising 10 species, 180 beetles comprising 18 species, 138 beetles comprising 15 species, 525 beetles comprising 27 species, and 449 beetles comprising 25 species were collected, respectively, with the highest abundance observed in August. In terms of elevation, 239 beetles comprising 19 species were collected at 300 m; 352 beetles comprising 27 species at 400 m; 314 beetles comprising 24 species at 500 m; 280 beetles comprising 22 species at 600 m; 183 beetles comprising 16 species at 700 m. Based on the slope, 442 beetles comprising 18 species belonging to eight families were collected on the southern slope, and 926 beetles comprising 24 species belonging to 10 families were collected on the northern slope. Analysis of the beetles on the southern slope produced the following estimations: diversity of 1.086, evenness of 0.866, and dominance of 0.109. Meanwhile, those in the northern slope yielded a diversity of 1.204, evenness of 0.873, and dominance of 0.081.

We conducted five times surveys, in June, September and October in 2012; June and September 2013, to catalog the mushroom flora in Ulleung-gun, Republic of Korea. More than 400 specimens were collected, and 317 of the specimens were successfully sequenced using the ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer barcode marker. We also surveyed the morphological characteristics of the sequenced specimens. The specimens were classified into 2 phyla, 7 classes, 21 orders, 59 families, 122 genera, and 221 species, and were deposited in the herbarium of Korea National Arboretum. Among the collected species, 72% were saprophytic, 25% were symbiotic, and 3% were parasitic. The most common order was Agaricales (189 specimens, 132 species), followed by Polyporales (47 specimens, 27 species), Russulales (31 specimens, 22 species), Boletales (10 specimens, 7 species), and so on. Herein, we also reported the first Bovista species in Korea, which was collected from Dokdo, the far-eastern island of Korea.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of thinning on changes in stand characteristics and understory vegetation in a silvopasture practiced Japanese larch plantation in the Research Forest of Kangwon National University, Korea. Three different thinning intensities (64%, 35%, and control) were applied. Before and after thinning, the understory plant species increased its number from 48 (7 tree species, 7 shrubs species, 28 herbaceous species, and 6 woody climbers) to 100 (11 tree species, 15 shrub species, 67 herbaceous species, and 7 woody climbers). Thinning made plants invade easily on the forest floor, and plot A (325 stems/ha) had much higher number of undersory species than those Of plot B (575 stems/ha) and control plot (1,150 stems/ha). In three years after thinning, understory aboveground biomass (kg/ha) of herbs were 523 for control, 1,230 for plot B, and 1,288 for plot A. The canopy coverage had remarkable influence on the understory biomass production, resulting in relatively small amount of herbage production on control plot. The differences were statistically significant between thinned plots and unthinned plot, but there were no significant differences among the thinned plots (p<0.05).

The objective of this study were to offer a basis data for application of management of forest resources through grasping of species composition by layer of forest vegetation in the Mt. Geumwon recreational forest. The tree and subtree layer consisted of 27 and 44 species in Mt. Geumwon recreational forest respectively. The importance value of Quercus mongolica (57.1) and Q. serrata (40.4) were highest in the tree layer and that of Acer pseudo-sieboldianum (43.4) was highest in the subtree layer, respectively. The shrub and herb layer was composed of 71 and 69 species, respectively. The value of species diversity ranged from 1.0391 to 1.5403. Evenness ranged from 0.7259 to 0.8320. Dominance was 0.2741 at tree layer, 0.2440 at subtree layer, 0.1680 at shrub layer, and 0.1702 at herb layer, which showed that Mt. Geumwon recreational forest is dominated by a large number of species at all layer. The result of forest vegetation in Mt. Geumwon recreational forest may be utilized as a basic data for application of reasonable ecological management of forest resources.

For this paper, a study targeting 9 forest patches in Dangjin to suggest for the wild birds, was conducted. The correlation between the emergence of wild birds and the forest vegetation was analyzed, and the patterns of forest vegetation for the improvement of species diversity were suggested by classifying wild birds and foraging guild by the type of forest vegetation. As for the characteristics of the wild birds emerged, more species and bigger population appeared in the vegetation type of mixed stand forest where the natural deciduous broadleaf trees and evergreen needleleaf trees coexisted in the large scale vegetation area. Thus, it was known that the advent of summer migratory birds and resident birds were affected the most by forest patches and vegetation types. As for foraging guild, the larger the forest paches the more the species and the population of the wild birds inhabiting in shrubs and bushes.

This study attempts to classify forest species using hyperspectral data for supporting resources management. The primary dataset used was AISA sensor. The sensor was mounted onboard the NOMAD GAF-27 aircraft at 2,000 m altitude creating a 2 m spatial resolution on the ground. Pre-processing was carried out with CALIGEO software, which automatically corrects for both geometric and radiometric distortions of the raw image data. The radiance data set was then converted to at-sensor reflectance derived from the FODIS sensor. Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) technique was used for image classification. The spectra libraries for tree species were established after confirming the appropriate match between field spectra and pixel spectra. Results showed that the highest spectral signature in NIR range were Kembang Semangkok (Scaphium macropodum), followed by Meranti Sarang Punai (Shorea parvifolia) and Chengal (Neobalanocarpus hemii). Meanwhile, the lowest spectral response were Kasai (Pometia pinnata), Kelat (Eugenia spp.) and Merawan (Hopea beccariana), respectively. The overall accuracy obtained was 79%. Although the accuracy of SAM techniques is below the expectation level, SAM classifier was able to classify tropical tree species. In future it is believe that the most effective way of ground data collection is to use the ground object that has the strongest response to sensor for more significant tree signatures.
This research aimed to develop forest type classification technique for the mixed forest with coniferous and broad-leaved species using the high resolution satellite data. QuickBird data was used as satellite data. The method of this research was to extract satellite data for every single tree crown using image segmentation technique, then to evaluate the accuracy of classification by changing grouping criteria such as tree species, families, coniferous or broad-leaved species, and timber prices. As a result, the classification of tree species and families level was inaccurate, on the other hand, coniferous or broad-leaved species and timber price level was high accurate.
