  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the foot rotation on the lower limb muscles. Fourteen subjects performed step-up/step-down at a cadence of 80 beats/min, exercises with the foot neutral, $35^{\circ}$ internally rotated, and $35^{\circ}$ externally rotated, respectively. For each variable, a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine whether there were significant differences between genders and among the eight types of jump. When a significant difference was found in jump type, post hoc analyses were performed using the Tukey procedure. A confidence level of p < .05 was used to determine statistical significance. The results showed that significant changes in averaged IEMG values occurred with the internal rotation of the foot in the lateral gastrocnemius during the knee extension, and in the semitendinosus during the knee flexion. During the knee extension, however, the internal rotation of the foot produced a significantly lower Averaged IEMG values than the neutral foot position in the medial gastrocnemius. The results also found that the peak IEMG activity of the rectus femoris during the knee extension for the external rotation of the foot was Significantly higher than the corresponding values in the neutral position of the foot, while the intenal rotaion of the foot exhibited a significant difference with the neutral position of the foot in the semitendinosus during the knee flexion. In general, the foot rotation position did not influence the average IEMG and Peak IEMG values of most muscles. The practice of adopting foot rotation to selectively strengthen individual muscles of the lower limb was not supported by this study. The external rotation of the foot produced high muscle activities in the quadriceps during the knee extension. For the knee extension, therefore, maintaining a laterally rotated position should be need for stable and comfortable position.

  • In this study, foot shapes were compared between the men in their 20's and 60's, with the application of 3-dimensional measurement data, and the classification was established in consideration of each of their features. The results are as follows: 1. The investigation into the differences between the groups for the 3-dimensional measurement items of the men in their 20's and 60's indicated that those in their 20's had larger values than those in the 60's age group for all of the length items, while those in the 60's age group had larger values for all of the angle items. 2. The analysis of the constituting factors for the feet of those in their 60's and 20's resulted in the 7 items for the 20's age group and 8 items for those in the 60's age group. 3. The comparison of foot classifications for the 60's age group and 20's age group presented 3 types each for both groups, but the features of each type was different. To examine each characteristic by each type and age group, following can be determined of the 60's age group. Type 1 had a thick instep, high malleolus position and heel and a thick formed ankle. Type 2 the entire foot was small, and the big toe was formed in such a way that it tened to bend toward the inside. When the whole size compared with similar Type 1, Type 3 had a low instep, a low heel, the big toe did not bend and ankle form was thin. The following can be determined of the 20's age group. Type 1 had narrow width a thin ankle and the big toe was formed in such a way that it bended toward the inside. Compared with length, Type 2 had wide width and a thick ankle. Type 3 had a larger overall size, thick instep and wide and the toe was big, but the characteristic of inside and outside of a malleolus position was low and the big toe's form showed no tendencies to bend.

  • Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a proliferative disease that affects the synovial joint, tendon and bursa. PVNS can form a nodular structure in any joint, but it most commonly affects the knee joint and is rare in the foot and ankle joint. PVNS is divided into two types. Localized-type PVNS exhibits focal involvement with a nodular mass, while diffuse-type PVNS involves the entire synovium. Synovitis of the affected joint can also destroy cartilage and bone. Diffuse type accounts for 75% of PVNS and has a reported recurrence rate of 12.2% to 46%; aggressive synovectomy is recommended as the most effective treatment. In localized-type PVNS, only arthroscopic partial synovectomy is effective with a lower recurrence rate. We report a patient with severe ankle joint arthritis induced by diffusetype PVNS. The patient was treated by lateral malleolar ostectomy and ankle arthrodesis with a plate and screws via a lateral approach.

  • In this study, a robot foot having toes for firm stepping on uneven surface is proposed. The toes are connected to the lower leg by parallel links so that the lower leg can rotate in the rolling and pitching directions during stance phase without ankle joint. The landing performance of the foot on uneven surface was evaluated by relative comparison with that of the most common foot making point contact with the walking surface, since the test conditions considering real uneven surface could be hardly defined for its objective evaluation. Anti-slip margin(ASM) was defined in this study to express the slip resistance of a robot foot when it lands on a projection with half circular-, triangular- or rectangular cross section, assuming that uneven surface consists of projections having these kind of cross sections in different sizes. Based on the ASM analysis, the slip conditions for the two feet were experimentally confirmed. The results showed that the slip resistance of the new foot is not only higher than that of the conventional point contact type foot but also less sensitive to the surface friction coefficient.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze the effects of arch support taping on static balance, static/dynamic foot contact area, and ground reaction force during walking according to the types of elastic tapes with mechanical elasticity differences. Design: Cross-sectional study Methods: Twenty-six participants selected for flexible flat feet through the navicular drop test were randomly assigned to non-taping, Dynamic-taping, and Mechano-taping conditions. Static balance and foot contact area were compared in the standing posture according to arch support taping conditions, and foot contact area and ground reaction force were compared during walking. Results: There was no significant difference in static balance according to the taping condition in the standing position, but the foot contact area in the Mechano-taping condition showed a significant decrease compared to the non-taping condition (p<0.05). The foot contact area during walking significantly decreased in the Dynamic-taping and Mechano-taping conditions (p<0.05), but there was no significant difference between the ground reaction force. Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, it was confirmed that among the types of elastic taping, arch support taping using dynamic taping and Mechano-taping has the effect of supporting the arch with high elastic recovery. Any type of elastic tape can be used for arch alignment in flexible flat foot.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between the shape of the foot and foot abrasion. and to provide preliminary data for shoe manufacturing by comparing the length of a woman's feet and the shoe size. The Martin calibrator and measuring tapes were utilized to measure the shapes of 163 female college students' feet. Indirect measurements were also obtained by line drawing of the feet for additional analysis. Brief questionnaires about what type of shoes are worn were given to the subjects of the study. Data analysis was presented by frequency, percentage, and standard deviations. Factor analysis and correlation co-efficiency of data was conducted on the significance level of p〈.05. The results of the study are as follows (1) The average number of days per week in which the subjects wear ladies' shoes per week were 4.5. Little over half of the subjects (53.87% ) answered that they wear heeled shoes for more than 8 hours per day. The most preferred height of a ladies'shoe heel was between 2 cm and 4 cm, as replied by 41.0% of the subjects. (2) The foot area where abrasion occurs most often was around the heel (51.2%) and the middle part of the sole (50.9%) (3) Factors correlated to the heel abrasion included the circumference and the breadth of the foot. The abrasion on the side of the first toe of mid-sized feet was most affected by the angle of the first the and inner foot line. The height of the foot heel was a significant factor for the abrasion near the anklebone. In conclusion, the abrasion resulted from the inappropriate fitting of the shoe and the foot. Also, the circumference and the width factors were more influential rather than the foot length. Therefore, more database on this should be systemized and available to the footwear manufacturers and the customers for more practical use of shoe size and public education.

  • Background: An excessive pronated foot is defined as a flattening or complete loss of the medial longitudinal arch. Excessive foot pronation is considered to have high risk factors of overuse injuries in the lower limb. Various treatments have been investigated in attempts to control excessive pronation. Objects: This meta-analysis identifies the effects of an anti-pronation taping technique using different materials. Methods: The electronic databases used include MEDLINE, the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro), Science Direct, the Korean Studies Information Service System (KISS), the Research Information Sharing Service (RISS), the Korea National Library, and the Korean Medical Database (studies published up to July 31, 2019). The database search used the following keywords: "foot drop" OR "foot arch" OR "foot pronation" OR "flat foot (pes planus)" AND "taping" OR "support." Eight eligible studies were analyzed to determine the effectiveness of anti-pronation taping in study and control groups. Results: The overall random effect size (Hedges'g) of the anti-pronation taping technique was 0.147 (95% confidence interval [CI]: -.214 to .509). When the effect (Hedges' g) was compared by the type of tape material, rigid tape (RT; Lowdye taping) was .213 (95% CI: -.278 to .704) and kinesiotape (KT; arch support taping) was -.014 (95% CI: -.270 to .242). Based on this meta-analysis, it was not possible to identify the extent to which anti-pronation taping was effective in preventing navicular drop, improving balance, or changing foot pressure. Only three of the eight eligible studies applied KT on excessive pronated feet, and the outcome measure areas were different to those of the RT studies. The KT studies used EMG data, overall foot posture index (FPI) scores, and rear foot FPI scores. In contrast, the RT studies measured navicular heights, various foot angles, and foot pressure. Conclusion: This review could not find any conclusive evidence about the effectiveness of any taping method for patients with pronated feet. Future studies are needed to develop the anti-pronation taping technique based on the clinical scientific evidence.

  • This paper investigates human discomfort response to the foot-to-head acceleration. During ambulance transport, a patient suffers from the foot-to-head acceleration, which might deteriorate his illness. To investigate the relationship between the ride discomfort and the foot-to-head acceleration, experiments were performed using a van type automobile similar to an ambulance. The experimental results show that head-ward acceleration is more uncomfortable than the foot-ward acceleration. For further investigation of the difference of ride discomfort caused by the direction of acceleration, two experiments were peformed using a tilt bed. In these experiments, foot-to-head acceleration is applied to the subjects by tilting the bed. Using a tilt bed, we investigated two things; relationship between discomfort and inclination of the bed ...

  • The distribution of the pressure between the sole of a feet and a supporting surface can reveal the information about the structure and fonction of the foot and the posural control of the whole body. In particular, the measurement of the vertical contact forces between the plantar surface of the foot and the shoe insole is of great importance to reveal the loading distributio patterns incurred from a particular shoe midsole design. In order to investigate the plantar surface pressure distribution, an insole-type sensor with a piezoelectric material is developed and tested. The present paper describes a new method to completely reduce both the shear force and pyroelectric effects that are normally caused from piezoelectric materials.
