  • Purpose: This descriptive study aimed to identify the foot health condition and related characteristics of nurses. Methods: A literature-based questionnaire was developed and distributed to 472 nurses in a university hospital in B city, and data were collected from August 1 to August 15, 2020. The Foot Health Status Questionnaire (FHSQ) was used to measure foot health condition. Results: The most common foot diseases among the participants were plantar fasciitis (7.8%) and hallux valgus (7.0%). To relieve foot pain, most nurses used relaxation techniques, stretching, elevating the legs, and foot massage. The level of foot health condition among nurses was lower than that of older persons or the general public with chronic foot disease. The foot health condition of the nurses showed that the lower the age and the greater the number of foot diseases, the more severe the pain and dysfunction. Conclusion: The study shows that there is a need for interventions that will raise nurses' awareness about foot health and induce better foot health management.

  • Purpose: Schwannoma is a slow-growing, encapsulated benign peripheral nerve tumor that originates from the Schwann cell of the nerve sheath. Schwannoma most frequently involves the major nerve. Schwannoma of the foot is rare. This is a report of our experience with a small, deep-seated, and non-palpable schwannoma occurring in the foot. Methods: A 42-year-old woman presented with the plantar pain of the right foot during 2 years. Physical examination did not identified a palpable mass. She made a clinical diagnosis of plantar fasciitis and was conservatively treated 2 years ago. Since her plantar foot pain was aggravated, she was recently visited again. For the evaluation of her plantar foot pain, sonographic examination of the whole right foot was performed, and it revealed a small hypoechoic hetergenous, deep-seated mass beneath the plantar aponeurosis. At operation, a $0.7{\times}0.6{\times}0.4$ cm sized, ovoid, yellowish grey mass was removed. Results: Histology was confirmed that the mass was a benign schwannoma. There were no postoperative complications. Conclusion: Unsusual case of a schwannoma with the plantar foot pain during 2 years is presented. It should be recognized a small, deep-seated, non-palpable

  • We report on a case of post-burn contracture and right foot deformity in a 37-year-old female who underwent two surgical interventions at the age of seven years. The patient remained well without any associated problems until she presented to our hospital at the age of 37 years with severe pain and right foot deformity. A few treatment modalities have been reported, and amputation has been suggested as the best approach. However, our patient was treated with a talonavicular arthrodesis and a soft tissue procedure, which resulted in a stable, plantigrade, and pain-free foot with an unsupported, bipedal gait.

  • Purpose: Bone contusion is usually treated with conservative therapy for 3 months. Bone contusion around knee and hip joints has been extensively reported on, but there are scant reports on this condition in foot and ankle joints. This study evaluated the nature, characteristics and location of bone contusion around foot and ankle joints to enlighten clinicians on how to better treat this disease entity. Materials and Methods: We classified bone contusion of the 76 patients into three types (102 sites; 47 ankle sprains, 18 traffic accidents, 11 falls) according to the Costa-Paz system with employing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and the study then analyzed the common sites and areas of occurrence according to the mechanism of injury and duration of pain after first conducting conservative therapy. Results: Of the 76 patients (102 sites) on the MRI, 43 case (42.2%) for talus, 19 cases for distal tibia, and 12 cases for calcaneus were involved. The classification, according to the Costa-Paz system, was Type I, 51 cases; Type II, 32 cases; and Type III, 19 cases. The duration of pain after conservative treatment was 12.15±2.17 weeks for Type I, 14.5±2.15 weeks for Type II, and 21.0±3.8 weeks for Type III. Conclusion: The most common location of post-traumatic bone contusion around both the foot and ankle is the talus, distal tibia, and calcaneus. The most common type of injury noted on MRI is a diffuse signal with change of the medullary component (Type I), In cases of bone contusion extending to a subjacent articular surface or disruption or depression of the normal contour of the cortical surface (Types II, III), the patients' pain appears to last longer. Thus, it is necessary to consider a longer period of conservative treatment in cases of Types II and III bone contusion because the patients' pain may last longer than 3 months.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate between low back pain scale and disability index owing to gait pattern. For the period of February 1 to February 29, 2004, we had conducted a questionnaire and direct interview with 100 persons lived in Daejeon. The result were as follows: 1. The stride length of experimental group. the male was $49.9{\pm}12.9cm$. the female $45.7{\pm}12.9cm$ and the width of feet, the male was $13.5{\pm}5.7cm$, the female $12.2{\pm}4.8cm$. 2. The Fick angle of all subjects was showed in external disposition, the left angle showed in asymmetry, the male was $11.0{\pm}5.7^{\circ}$, the female $8.5{\pm}1.3^{\circ}$. 3. The foot arch was similar to sex as a weight bearing and non-weight bearing, the male was $1.3{\pm}0.8cm$, the female $1.3{\pm}0.9cm$. 4. The impedimental index according to back pain grade, men was a lower than women, the male was $5.7{\pm}6.9$ and the female $7.2{\pm}5.3$. 5. The relation to difference between foot arch and disability index according to back pain grade as a weight bearing and non-weight bearing, the higher foot arch, the higher back pain grade was statistically significance(p<.05). 6. The relation between width of feet and disability index according to back pain grade, the wider width of feet, the higher back pain grade was statistically significance(p<.01). 7. The relation between stride length and disability index according to back pain grade, the wider stride length, the higher back pain grade was statistically significance(p<.05).

  • The purpose of this study was to test the effects of foot reflexology on pain and mood in patients who have just had a mastectomy. The research design was a nonequivalent control group, non-synchronized design. The participants for this study were 28 patients with breast cancer on first or second day after mastectomy surgery. The first 12 patients were assigned to the control group and the second 16 to the experimental group. The study was conducted from October 28, 2001 to December 22, 2001 on a surgical unit of Y Medical Center in Seoul, Korea. Pain intensity, blood pressure, pulse rate and mood were measured as dependent variables. The instrument used for pain intensity and mood was a 10 cm visual analogue scale. Cronbach alpha for this study was .70. For the experimental group pre and post tests were done immediately before and 15 minutes after completion of foot reflexology. Foot reflexology was performed once for 20 minutes. After the pretest, patients in the control group were instructed to have a quiet time for a 35 minute period and then the post-test was done. The number of participants was small so the data were analyzed by Mann-Whitney U test, and Wilcoxon signed ranks test. The results of this study are as follow : 1. In the experimental group there were significant decreases between the pre and post tests for pain intensity (z=-3.47, p<.001), diastolic blood pressure (z=-2.67, p<.01) and pulse rate (z=-3.44, p<.001) but there was no difference between the two groups on the post test. 2. The systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and pulse rate were also not significantly different between the experimental group and the control group on the post test. 3. The mood score was significantly improved after foot reflexology(z=-3.52, p=.000) and the difference between the two groups was also significant (u=49.0, p=.03). In conclusion, there was a statistically significant difference in mood between the two groups, but no difference for pain intensity, blood pressure, or pulse rate. However, there were significant differences between the pretest and post-test for pain intensity, diastolic blood pressure and pulse rate in the experimental group. On the basis of the above findings, this study suggests that foot reflexology can be an effective method of relieving pain and improving mood in clinical practice in women who have had mastectomy surgery.

  • Background: Musculoskeletal pain is associated with obesity; however, information on factors associated with pain in adults with obesity and severe obesity is limited. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain by site and intensity of pain and associated factors in individuals with severe obesity (body mass index ≥ 35.0 kg/㎡). Methods: Baseline data from the DieTBra Trial study evaluating pain symptoms in nine body regions over the last seven days using the Nordic Questionnaire on Musculoskeletal Symptoms and Numerical Pain Scale. The variables analyzed using multiple Poisson regression with hierarchical analysis were: sociodemographic, lifestyle, food consumption, clinical, and anthropometric, and the outcome was moderate and intense pain. Results: In 150 participants, there was a high prevalence of ankle and foot pain (68.7%), lower back pain (62.7%), pain in the knees (53.3%) and upper back pain (52.0%), with a predominance of intense pain. Factors associated with pain according to specific sites were: type 2 diabetes with hand/wrist pain; sedentary time with hip pain; insomnia with pain in the hip and knee; edema in the lower limbs with pain in the lower back and ankles/feet; degree of obesity with ankle/foot pain; and percentage of total fat with ankle/foot pain. Conclusions: There was a high prevalence of pain and intense pain in individuals with severe obesity and an association with clinical variables, the degree of obesity, and sedentary lifestyle.
