In this study, the gait imbalance evaluation algorithm based on two axes angle using encoder is proposed. This experiment was carried out to experiment with a healthy adult male to 10 people. The device is attached to the hip and knee joint in order to measure the angle during the gait. Normal and imbalance gait angle data were measured using an encoder attached to the hip and knee joints. Also, in order to verify the reliability of estimation of asymmetrical gait using hip and knee angle, it was compared with the result of asymmetrical gait estimation using foot pressure. SI (Symmetry Index) was used as an index for determining the gait imbalance. As a result, normal gait and 1.5cm imbalance gait were evaluation as normal gait through SI using an encoder. And imbalance gait of 3cm, 4cm, and 6cm were judge by imbalance gait. Whereas all gait experiments except normal gait were evaluation as imbalance gait through SI using the pressure. It was possible to determine both the normal gait and imbalance gait through measurement for the angle and the pressure.

In this paper, an efficient system using 3-axis accelerometer is proposed to diagnose the gait imbalance. The proposed hardware system consists of two 3-axis accelerometers to measure 3 directional acceleration of ankles and an embedded system to transfer the data. The acquired data were normalized and then compared to analyze the symmetry between normal and abnormal gait with ROCC (ratio of correlation coefficient). 10 healthy subjects were participated and each subject repeated the experiment 5 times. To make unbalanced ambulation, the height of the heel of one foot was changed during experiments. From the results, it is verified that ROCC index grew apart from the reference according to growing imbalance and the proposed system could be available for estimation of gait imbalance.
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the differences in skiing time and vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) between the basic parallel turn and short turn. Method: Eleven alpine ski instructors (age: $28.73{\pm}4.29yrs$, height: $172.36{\pm}6.30cm$, body mass: $71.45{\pm}9.16kg$, career: $11.09{\pm}2.70yrs$) participated in this study. Each skier was asked to perform a basic parallel turn and short turn on a $16^{\circ}$ groomed slope. A foot pressure measurement system was used to measure the skiing time and vGRF under the three plantar regions (forefoot, midfoot, rearfoot). Results: Skiing time decreased significantly in all three phases during the short turn (p<.05). In the initiation phase, the vGRF showed a greater decrease on the midfoot and rearfoot during the short turn (p<.05). In the steering phase 1, the vGRF showed a greater increase on the forefoot and decreased on the midfoot during the short turn (p<.05). In the steering phase 2, the vGRF showed a greater increase on the forefoot and rearfoot during the short turn (p<.05). Conclusion: Our findings proved that the skiing time and vGRF changed during the short turn. Consequently, we suggest that recreational skiers should decrease the skiing time of the steering phase compared to that of the initiation phase and increase the vGRF on the forefoot and rearfoot in the steering phase.
A new bioelectrical impedance method has been developed and evaluated. The electrodes; were made of stainless steel and electrical interfaces were created by an upright subject gripping hand electrodes and stepping onto foot electrodes. Eight tactile electrodes were in contact with surfaces of both hands and feet; thumb, palm and fingers, front sole, and rear sole. Automatic on-off switches were used to change current pathways and to measure voltage differences for target segments. Segmental body resistances and whole body resistance(RWHOLE)were measured in 60 healthy subjects. Segmental resistances of right arm(RRA), left arm(RLA), trunk(RT), right leg(RRL) and left leg(RLL)were310.0$\pm$61.6$\Omega$, 316.9$\pm$64.6$\Omega$, 25.1$\pm$3.4$\Omega$, 236.8$\pm$31.2$\Omega$ and 237.6$\pm$30.4$\Omega$, respectively. Individual segmental impedance indexes(Ht2/RRA, Ht2/RT, and Ht2 /RLA) were closely related to lean body mass(LBM)as measured by densitometry ranged from r=0.925 to 0.960. Ht2/(RRA+RT+RLA) predicted LBM slightly better(r=0.969) than the traditional index, Ht2/RWHOLE(r=0.964), supporting the accuracy of the segmental measurement. A multiple regression equation utilizing Ht2/RRA, Ht2/RT and Ht2/RRL predicted LBM with r=0.971. Ht2/RRA term of the regression contributed to more than 40$\%$ of the LBM prediction, indicating that lean mass of arm represented whole body LBM more closely than other body segments. The new bioimpedance method was characterized by upright posture, eight tactile electrodes, segmental measurements and utilization of electronic switches in comparison with the traditional method. The measurement with this new method was extremely reproducible, quick and easy to use.

Purpose: This study compared the functional fitness and brake response of elderly and young drivers to confirm the correlation between the functional fitness and brake response. Methods: This study was a cross sectional observational design. Older drivers (>65age, n=21) and young adult drivers (20-40aged, n=20) were enrolled as subjects. The functional fitness of the subjects was measured using a senior fitness test consisting of a back scratch (BS), chair sit and reach (CSR), arm curl (AC), chair stand up (CSU), foot up and go (8-FUG), and 2-minute step (2-MS). The brake response used the virtual driving simulator to measure the brake reaction time (BRT) and braking distance (BD) according to the pedestrian protection and traffic signal compliance. Results: The older drivers had a lower BS (p<0.000), CSU (p=0.040), and 8-FUG (p=0.011) than the young adult drivers. BS and 8-FUG showed a significant positive correlation with the BRT and BD of pedestrian protection and traffic signal compliance. CSU showed a significant negative correlation with the BRT of pedestrian protection and traffic signal compliance. Conclusion: These findings suggest that the flexibility of the upper extremity, lower extremity strength, and agility are strongly correlated with the driving performance of elderly drivers.

Purpose : We investigated the effects of the insole types on lower leg muscle activation during treadmill walking. The three insole types investigated for this study were normal insole, medial wedge insole, and viscoheel. Methods : Participants were assigned into three groups. People with foot transformation were excluded from this study. Each participant walked for ten minutes. The first day we applied a normal insole. On the second day, a medial wedge insole was applied. Finally, on the last day a viscoheel was applied. After walking on a treadmill for ten minutes, we measured muscle activation in lower leg muscles (gastrocnemius and tibialis anterior). Surface electromyography (EMG) was used to measure muscle activity. The data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measures to determine the statistical significance. Results : The results of this study were summarized as follows. While walking on the treadmill, root mean square (RMS) values of the gastrocnemius when the viscoheel was applied were significantly lower than the other insole types. There was no significant difference for the RMS values for the tibialis anterior using viscoheel. The normal insole and viscoheel insole were significantly different in a post hoc analysis. However, there was no significant difference for normal insole and medial wedge insole. Conclusion : Using a viscoheel insole decreases muscle activity of the lower leg. Therefore, in conclusion, the viscoheel insole type reduces the load on the lower leg during walking.

In this study, we performed algorithm development of automatic symptom degree for patient with hallux valgus one of the representative foot disease of morden. And this study proposes an efficient automated technique that is different from the original analog diagnosis for treatment and surgery of hallux valgus using digital image process. And we used X-Ray images of both a normal and a patient with hallux valgus in the procedure. First, we marked the standard angle on the X-Ray image of normal through Overlap & Add technique. Then we created a standard image through thinning filter and roberts filter(edge detection algorithm). Second, we used sobel filter of edge detection algorithm on the X-Ray image of patient. Moreover, we went another overlap & add technique procedure with both normal and patient image that we made. With the output, we projected the display detection image onto the screen. Finally, with the display detection image, we could measure and project the diagnosis angle of hallux valgus. And this confirms that this method is much more practical and applicable for another orthopedics disease than the prior one.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate recent clinical studies on the effect of acupuncture on hearing loss. Methods : Based on the PubMed search with the key search terms of 'hearing loss, acupuncture', dated from 2004 to 2017, 1 controlled trials, 3 case reports and 3 case series was found, and were analyzed for this study. Results : 1. The most commonly used acupoints were Shuaigu(GB8) and Fengchi(GB20). 2. The most commonly used meridians were the du channel, the gall bladder meridian of foot-shaoyang, and the triple bunner meridian of hand shaoyang. 3. Acupuncture treatment was effective for conductive and sensorineural hearing loss, especially sudden sensory neural hearing loss. 4. More clinical studies are needed to prove the effectiveness of the acupuncture on hearing loss. To be more objective on the study results, we can measure auditory brainstem response for hearing loss after acupuncture treatment.
Purpose: The objective of this study was to investigate whether augmented low-dye taping treatment, which consists of low-dye, reverse-six, and calcaneal-sling taping, is effective in alleviating the collapse of the medial longitudinal arch, which is used for physical balancing during one leg standing. Methods: The subjects comprised 27 students in their 20s whose navicular bone height was lowered by 10 mm or more when evaluated using the navicular drop test. Those with interference factors like deformities, fractures, or traumas were excluded. Frequency-division multiplexing was used to measure one leg standing, and the method to avoir the average each time after 3 times of measurement was applied. Results: Significant differences in the center of pressure (COP) path length, COP average velocity, and forefoot force were observed during left leg standing (p<0.05), but for right leg standing, only changes in forefoot force were noted. Conclusion: Based on the changes to the non-dominant leg in terms of COP path length, COP average velocity, and forefoot force, the immediate effect of augmented low-dye taping, which combines three types of anti-pronation taping, on one leg standing balance in people with flat feet was confirmed.
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of squat posture, band position, and contraction type on the muscle activity of the hip abductors during resisted lateral band walking. Design: A cross-sectional survey study Methods: 24 healthy male subjects were recruited, and surface electromyography was used to measure the muscle activity of the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and tensor fascia lata of the dominant leg during lateral walking exercises. Resistance bands were applied to the knees, ankles, and feet in semi-squat and squat postures, and exercises were randomly performed under six different conditions. Results: The results showed significant differences in muscle activity in the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and tensor fascia lata according to posture, band position, and contraction type (p<0.05). The muscle activity of the hip abductors increased in the squat posture and with the band placed on the distal joint compared to the proximal joint (p<0.05). Additionally, muscle activity was higher in the eccentric contraction phase than in the concentric contraction phase (p<0.05). Contrary to previous studies, moving the resistance band from the ankle to the foot increased the muscle activity of the tensor fascia lata while the activity of the gluteus maximus and gluteus medius also increased. Conclusions: According to the results, squat posture with a resistance band placed on the feet and using an eccentric contraction phase were found to be the most effective methods for strengthening the hip abductors.
