  • Recently, as interest in deep learning has increased, many researches in various fields using deep learning techniques have been conducted. Studies on automatic generation of fonts using deep learning-based generation models are limited to several languages such as Roman or Chinese characters. Generating Korean font is a very time-consuming and expensive task, and can be easily created using deep learning. For research on generating Korean fonts, it is important to prepare a Korean font dataset from the viewpoint of process automation in order to keep pace with deep learning-based generation models. In this paper, we propose a Korean font dataset for deep learning-based Korean font research and describe a method of constructing the dataset. Based on the Korean font data set proposed in this paper, we show the usefulness of the proposed dataset configuration through the process of applying it to a deep learning Korean font generation application.

  • Use without permission of font files is a social problem. In the meantime, our court recognized font files as computer programs. Is the font file a computer program? This recognition arises from the inability to distinguish between computer programs and data. Expert recognition, on the other hand, does not recognize font files as computer programs. In this regard, there was a case in 2014 that INI files were not computer programs, but only data files. So, the attitude of the Supreme Court in 2001 only makes it difficult to distinguish between computer programs and data. The Supreme Court's decision needs to be changed. In addition, a new legal system should be in place to protect font files.

  • Each cultural community has developed a variety of fonts to express their own language and characters. Hangul has also diversified its font shapes through changing the composition ratio and look of the consonants and vowels. Rather, thanks to the variety of these fonts, a considerable amount of time and effort must be devoted to the selection of a specific font shape. This is related to the fact that the current Hangul service and classification system process the font only with its name or the name of the manufacturer. It means that there is no consensus about the font shape classification system for Hangul. In this study, we propose a shape property set that can be a basis for classifying Hangul fonts. The font shape property set was generated by performing statistical analysis with features which have been studied by the font design experts and was verified through questionnaire using representative fonts based on the classification scheme defined by the Hangul font design classification system standard. This study is meaningful in that it is a study on shape classification properties of K-means and PCA statistical techniques based on font data rather than design field study.

  • As we review the mechanism regarding digital font generation and birth of TrueType font, we realizes that the process is composed of sequential steps such as contour fonts from glyph table. This fact implies that we propose classification of TrueType font in terms of segment width and the number of occurrence from the glyph data.

  • This study aims to suggest basic materials to develop an emotional font for future Hangeul font development plan by investigating emotional reaction displayed through the subjects and by quantifying its contribution of the stimulation elements causing such reaction. For this, a survey of 150 university students who are currently enrolled in the College of Design was conducted in order to analyze correlation between 30 emotional words extracted from the Hangeul font and the selected 36 sample fonts. The combined data was described with the two dimensional dispersion using the quantification theory type III. The analysis found out that the Hangeul font forms the x-axis showing "soft(dynamic).hard(static)" and the y-axis showing "modern(light).classic(heavy)”. Specifically, there exist emotional groups such as "archaic","masculine","feminine","negative", and "modern static"on each axis. In addition, to extract the casual relationship between the value of emotional reaction and its stimulation elements quantitatively, the author indicated the emotional words of each axis and the total value of equivalent five emotional word groups as the standard variance and the constituent of Hangeul font as the independent variable, and then the quantification theory type I was used to analyze the physical elements of the Hangeul font. As a result, "the centerline of gravity(base line)" and "thickness variance of a stroke" on the two axes, and "the centerline of gravity(base line)" and "decoration" among the five groups were identified as the most influential elements that affect the emotional reaction of the subjects.

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to examine frame ratio of text information and font size in the circle smartwatch. Background: Recently, electronic manufacturers try to develop the original metaphor of traditional wrist watch (circle) in terms of smartwatch. They endeavor to break the square display in order to improve emotional customer satisfaction. Method: The experiments examined twenty level of text information design, combinations of four frame ratios (1:1, 4:3, 16:9, 21:9) and five font sizes (6pt, 7pt, 8pt, 9pt, 10pt). Nineteen participants volunteered for the experiment. Dependent variables were WPM (Words per Minute), reading preference, design preference and total preference. Furthermore, small circle display was made by using circle display data (1.3inch), which was exhibited in IFA (International Funkausstellung) 2014. Results: As a result, ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) revealed that WPM, and task time preference affect the specific frame ratio and font size. Results of ANOVA for reading preference, design preference, total preference were grouped by post-analysis LSD (Least Significant Difference). Among users, display ratio (16:9, 21:9), and font size (9pt) were preferred. In conclusion, 16:9 display ratio and 9pt are adaptable for text information in 1.3inch circle display. Conclusion: From the study, it is shown that 16:9 display ratio and 9pt size are more adaptable for text information in 1.3inch circle display than others. It is mainly due to the fact that the order of frame ratio and font size may affect the usability of reading long text information in a small circle display. Therefore, when developers design a circle display, the square frame ratio and font size are required to be considered according to circle size. Application: The 16:9 display ratio and 9pt font size may be utilized as a text information frame in the circle display design guideline for smartwatch.

  • The research on the factors which effect on legibility is mainly utilized as the basic data of selecting the standard guideline of VDT screen. But the research on Korean is scarcer than that of English. Furthermore, it is unreasonable to apply the results of the foreign language to Korean, beause of the difference between the typography of English and that of Korean. Therefore, more systematic and ergonomic research of the Korean typography on VDT screen is needed. In this paper, an experimental study on search speed and error rate is designed and performed according to different Korean letter size and font on search task with VDT. The experimental screen based on popular Ming and Gothic style is made up of total 12 artificial screens, each 6 different font size. As the criteria of the performance, searching speed(s.s.) and error rate (e) are selected, and CFF value is measured to evaluate user's visual fatigue. The results of experiment in font show that the Korean Gothic style is superior to the Korean Ming style in user's visual performance. The letter size that gives user the optimal performance ranges from the visual angle 39.8' to 55.5' in Ming style, from the visual angle 39.8' to 52.6' in Gothic systle. In visual fatigue experiment, the better performance of letter size is, the less tired user feels. And the smaller letter size is, the more tired user feels. There is no relationship between font and user's visual fatigue.

  • In this paper, we propose a graphic system for high speed generation of bitmap font data from the outline font data such as PostScript, etc. In desk-top publishing system. A VLSI chip called KAFOG was designed for the high-speed calculation of a cubic Bezier curve, which was implemented in 1.5\ulcorner CMOS gate array using 17,000 gates. A cubic Bezier curve is approximated by a set of line segments in KAFOG at the throughput of 250K curves per second with the clock frequency of 40 MHz. A prototype graphic system was developed using two MC6800 microprocessors and the KAFOG chip. Two microprocessors cooperate in a master and slave mode, and handshaking is used for communication between two processors. KAFOG chip, being controlled by the slave processor, operates as a coprocessor for the calculation of the outline font. The throughput of the prototype graphic system is 40 64$\times$64 outline fonts per sencond.

  • Learning data is composed of 100 characters with 10 different fonts, and test data is composed of 10 characters with a new font that is not used for the learning data. In order to consider the variety of learning data with several different fonts, 10 learning masks are constructed by accumulating pixel values of same characters with 10 different fonts. This process eliminates minute difference of characters with different fonts. After finding maximum values of learning masks, test data is expanded by multiplying these maximum values to the test data. The algorithm calculates sum of differences of two corresponding pixel values of the expanded test data and the learning masks. The learning mask with the smallest value among these 10 calculated sums is selected as the result of the recognition process for the test data. The proposed algorithm can recognize various types of fonts, and the learning data can be modified easily by adding a new font. Also, the recognition process is easy to understand, and the algorithm makes satisfactory results for character recognition.
