There have been studies on fork houses of Ulleungdo limited in embrasive characteristics, space construction and arrangement. So, the purpose of this study is to investigate about the element and background of Ulleung-island Folk Houses in Modern Age.
Accoring to many studies which concerned with the types of folk houses, there are many types of folk houses in Korean peninsula and its areal distribution had been determined by the barrier of mountains, in general. But we have neglected to examine the overlapped areal distribution still now. If two types of culture with different housing type contact at one region, it may interrelated each other and invent certain exclusive charicteristics. And there are its own attitude of traditional culture in Kyung-buk provingce where serveral types of folk houses settled together. The purpose of this research is to clarify the general pattern of culture in terms of folk houses in northern Kyung-buk province and to suggest a clue to solve the cultural inter-relationship each other, By classification of the collected plans in this area, the authors try to find out the charicteristics of the serveral types and there areal distribution. Finally, we can find out that certain types of folk houses located in northern Kyung-buk province had formed their cultural regions and these homogeneous regions are overlapped, partly.
This study is conducted to investigate the organization of Cheongunri in Cheong-song, as well as the characteristics of folk houses. In this study, 82 folk houses, including the villages, are surveyed; among them, 15 houses are intensively analyzed in terms of the structure of plane and the arrangement of space. The focus of study is on discovering an internal order system of villages and tracing a relationship between the characteristics of houses and the environmental factors. According to the results of the study, an Intrinsic order in Cheongunri is found to be related to the mountain axis, the road system, and the flow axis; and the form of folk houses is also found to be influenced by this order. The major characteristics of folk houses can be summarized as follows: (1) Most of the houses face east along the mountain axis, whereas houses influenced by the flow axis tend to face south. (2) The side of houses tend to be open to the outside, showing external directionality. This characteristic seems to be closely related to the direction of the main gate in a house site. (3) The layout of the main quarters and the annex quarters is found to be related to the direction of the main gate in a house site. Especially, the characteristics of courtyard are found to be affected by the annex quarters. From the above results, it can be concluded that villages have an intrinsic order depending on the geographic characteristics of a surrounding natural environment, and folk houses have also changed accordingly.

The Korean folk house, especially in rural area, has created the comfortable indoor environment with passive control of outdoor climate as environmental architecture. This study aims to identify the peculiar elements of sustainable architecture in folk houses in rural areas of Cheju Island and Ullŭng Island through the field experiments. The elements of environmental control of folk houses in both islands could be developed as the design elements of modern rural architecture. This effort can play major role to find the green design principles and techniques of environmental control of the building which have been neglected in the design of modern architecture.

The existing folk houses are selected in order to compare the characteristic of the plans with those of the central region in Korea. Moreover this region has been a collided zone of culture and military from the old period of the Three Kingdoms, because the district of Che-chun is located between the southern part and the central one. So its culture and housing plan showed as unique forms, so-called the Culture of Frontier and Composite. Consequently the purposes of this study are to grasp the characteristic of those plans and to compare the plan types with ones of the central region. There have been numerous researches on Nak-An village in Jeollanamdo, one of the most representative traditional castle village in Korea. Most of them have dealt with general and physical architectural scale and features separately. Therefore this study aims to understand the compositional characteristics of building layout and exterior space and the relations between street system and dwelling unit of folk houses in Nak-An village. The study examined houses of ordinary people in Nak-An village constructed before the village was not affected by foreign influences. 36 folk houses in Nak-An built from nineteenth century to early twentieth century and believed to have few physical changes from the original floor plans and architectural forms were the subjects to be analyzed. The most popular types in building layout are "Open L"and "Open U". The most typical orientation of main building is Southwest. The favorable entry into the dwelling lot is from the side. The street system in the village consists of main streets of South-North, resulting in dwelling lots with North-South axis most general. This site condition forces the entry into the lot from North main street and the side access to the main building. From these findings, the building layout and the entry into the dwelling lot of folk houses in Nak-An are strongly related with street system and conditions of dwelling lot.
The purpose of this study is to find out the plan type of traditional folk housing in Jeoun-Nam Province. The building time of these houses is mainly from early 19C to early 20C and about 1,000 houses have been investigated. The conclusion of this research is 1. Small house is composed of kitchen, one or two rooms and Marae(the place of storage and sacrificial rite). Big house has one more room and one more storage in comparison with the small house. Marae and Jeoungjibang(a room which is in front of kitchen) are characteristic rooms of folk house in Jeoun-Nam Province. 2. The plan type varies in Jeoun-Nam Province. '-'type is a main type of layout and it is arranged a kitchen, a big room, a Marae and a small room in order. In the big house, jeoungjibang(the third room) is added. 3. In the southwestern Island area, no room is arranged beside Marae. Marae has characteristic confucian order because it is the place of sacrificial rite. Therefore there is a great difference in comparison with other area. 4. In the mountain area such as Gurae, there are some houses which have two rooms arranged up and down in one side; that is, upside is Marae and downside is small room. This type is called Kyump Jip.
