  • Recently, high speed optical disk drives are increasingly demanded to read or write data fastly enough. To this end, both structure and controller designs of their optical pick-ups should be improved concurrently. In this paper, the pick-up during auto-focusing motion is mathematically modelled retaining all its peculiar features. The model turns out a linear time invariant system suitable for a control design method named H$_{\infty}$ which ensures robust stability in the presence of system uncertainties. Numerical simulation are performed to demonstrate the controller robustness with appropriate performance specifications being satisfied..

  • Recent trends and the effect of mechanical vibrations in optical disk drives are reviewed in this paper. The Nation from CD drives to high density DVD drives and the development of writable optical disk drives require tighter mechanical tolerance. The demand for faster access time and higher data transfer rate also leads to critical mechanical problems to limit the tracking and focusing servo performance. The current mechanical issues to limit the performance of the drives and various technologies to overcome the mechanical problems are introduced. Vibrations of disk-spindle system, actuator and suspension designs of the optical pick-up, and general mechanical designs for the fast and stable access mechanism are considered.

Design of a GA-Based Fuzzy PID Controller for Optical Disk Drive (유전알고리즘을 이용한 Optical Disk Drive의 퍼지 PID 제어기 설계)

  • An optical head actuator of an optical disk drive consists of two servo mechanisms for the focusing and the tracking to acquire data from disk. As the rotational speed of the disk grows, the utilized lag-lead-lead compensator has known to be above its ability for precisely controlling the optical head actuator. To overcome the difficulty, this paper propose a new controller design method for optical head actuator based fuzzy proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control and the genetic algorithm(GA). It employs a two-stage control structure with a fuzzy PI and a fuzzy PD control and is optimized by the GA to yield the suboptimal fuzzy PID control performance. It is shown the feasibility of the proposed method through a numerical tracking actuator simulation.

  • At present, ultra-precision cutting technology has been studied in Korean research institutes, focusing on development of ultra-precision cutting tool technology and ultra-precision control engineering. However, the developed technologies are still far behind advanced countries. It focuses on metals including aluminum, copper and nickel, and nonmetals including plastics, silicone and germanium which require high precision while using a lathe. It is hard to implement high precision by grinding the aforementioned materials. To address the issue, the ultra-precision cutting technology has been developing by using ultra-precision machine tools very accurate and strong, and diamond tools highly abrasion-resistant. To address this issue, this study aims to conduct ultra-precision cutting by using ECTS (Error Compensation Tool Servo) to improve motion precision of elements and components, and compensate for motion errors in real time. An IR camera is used for analyzing cutting accuracy differences depending on the heat generated in diamond tools in cutting to examine the heat generated in cutting to study cutting accuracy depending on generated heat.
