The Joint Transform Correlator (JTC) has been the most suitable technique for real time optical pattern recognition and target tracking applications. This paper proposes a new application of the JTC system for an analysis of the blurring effect of the optical images caused by a defocused lens. We present the relation between the correlation peak, optical transfer function (OTF), and the amount of blurring caused by focusing error. Moreover, we show a possibility of calibrating the blurred image by simply measuring the correlation peak.
The uncertainty in WindCube LIDAR measurements, which are specific to wind profiling at less than 200m above ground levelin wind resource assessments, was analyzed focusing on the error caused by its volume sampling principle. A two-month SODAR measurement campaign conducted in an urban environment was adopted as the reference wind profile assuming that various atmospheric boundary layer shapes had been captured. The measurement error of LIDAR at a height z was defined as the difference in the wind speeds between the SODAR reference data, which was assumed to be a virtually true value, and the numerically averaged wind speed for a sampling volume height interval of $z{\pm}12.5m$. The pattern of uncertainty in the measurement was found to have a maximum in the lower part of the atmospheric boundary layer and decreased with increasing height. It was also found that the relative standard deviations of the wind speed error ratios were 6.98, 2.70 and 1.12% at the heights of 50, 100 and 150m above ground level, respectively.
In this study, a beam steering measurement system was developed to perform functions such as far-field beam steering and near-field beam focusing for TX/RX modes in the near file of the AESA radar. The beam steering measurement system consists of a spherical near-field scanner, an antenna positioner, a near-field controller, a network analyzer, a radar control system, a verification radar, a simulated radio, and an AESA radar. Using the developed system, the characteristics of TX/RX patterns before and after installation of radome to AESA radar were measured, and the beam pattern was analyzed through conversion to far field-after near-field measurement. The boresight error of the radar antenna device was measured, and it was confirmed that the main lobes were formed the same before and after the simulated radar dome was mounted.
In Korea, military authorities have neglected to consider impacts of military projects on local communities and natural environment. Moreover, local communities have had difficulties in dealing with the Ministry of National Defense (MND), which was stubborn enough not to implement environmental assessment on their projects. In this situation, recent case, "EIA of Baekgol Division's Howitzer Fire Training Site" in the Supreme Court-in which judges upheld the Higher Court's decision that the division violated the Environmental Impact Assessment law by ignoring to implement EIA-reveals that military projects can no longer forgo environmental assessment. The decision has serious ramifications on the future of Environmental Impact Assessment in military-led projects. This paper examines the proper scope of EIA in military-led projects and, more specifically, fire training site and searches for how to improve it through 'probable error,' a military training method that is applied to real 'howitzer' fire training. Probable error of the artillery field manual is nothing more than an error that exceeded as often as it is not exceeded and its scientific method was demonstrated through real fire tests in the US. Army. If it is applied to improve assessment methods about the proper scope of EIA in military 'howitzer' fire training site, 'probable error' will improve effect prediction, mitigation and reliability.
In this paper, a wideband adaptive beamforming approach for an acoustic vector sensor linear array is presented. It is a very important issue to estimate the stable covariance matrix for adaptive beamforming. In the conventional wideband adaptive beamforming based on coherent signal-subspace (CSS) processing, the error of bearing estimates is resulted from the focusing matrix estimation and the large number of data snapshot is necessary. To alleviate the estimation error and snapshot deficiency in estimating covariance matrix, the steered covariance matrix method in the pressure sensor is extended to the vector sensor array, and the subarray technique is incorporated. By this technique, more accurate azimuth estimates and a stable covariance matrix can be obtained with a small number of data snapshot. Through simulation, the azimuth estimation performance of the proposed beamforming method and a wideband adaptive beamforming based on CSS processing are assessed.

Time-reversal (TR) precoding focuses the energy of the effective channel in time and improves receive performance of a single tap receiver. Frequency-domain equal-gain-combining (FD-EGC) TR scheme, which works in linear block precoding fashion, has better temporal focusing performance than the traditional TR. Also, the FD-EGC improves receive performance of minimum mean square error receiver with distributed antenna systems (DAS). The detailed receive performance of the FD-EGC was analyzed in our previous work. In this paper, we focused on capacity analysis of the FD-EGC in DAS. We derived a scaling law which shows how the use of multiple antenna can increase the capacity of the FD-EGC precoding compared with that of no precoding. In addition, we analyze the secrecy rate of the FD-EGC which shows how high-rate messages can be transmitted towards an intended user without being decoded by the other users from the view point of information theoretic security.

An optical pick up generally has coupled dynamics between focusing and tracking servos. The coupled dynamics reduces tracking performance of optical disk drives. A conventional control method is holding the previous tracking control command in the presence of surface defect. The method has a long settling time. If the defective area is getting larger, objective lens will get away from the following track. In order to overcome this problem, this paper proposed a new control method for optical disk drives based on a prediction of tracking error and focusing error. We present how to compensate the coupled dynamics so that reduced setting time is achieved. It is verified by experiments that the proposed method brings an improved performance in the presence of surface defect as well as in the normal operating condition.
The working principle of a satellite camera involves a focusing mechanism for controlling the focus of the optical system, which is essential for proper functioning. However, research on focusing mechanisms of satellite optical systems in Korea is in the beginning stage and developed technology is limited to a thermal control type. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a motor-driven focusing mechanism applicable to small satellite optical systems. The proposed mechanism is designed to generate z-axis displacement in the secondary mirror by a motor. In addition, three flexure hinges have been installed on the supporter for application of preload on the mechanism resulting in minimization of the alignment error arising due to manufacturing tolerance and assembly tolerance within the mechanism. After fabrication of the mechanism, the alignment errors (de-space, de-center, and tilt) were measured with LVDT sensors and laser displacement meters. Conclusively, the proposed focusing mechanism could achieve proper alignment degree, which can be applicable to small satellite optical system.

In order to achieve and maintain dimensional accuracy in laser micro-machining, dominant parameters such as laser power and laser focus position need to be monitored and controlled real time. Also, in order to selectively machine multi-layered materials, the material being presently machined need to be recognized. This paper presents an auto-focusing (AF) module to keep laser focus on a large-area surface; a real-time laser power stabilizing module based on optical attenuation; and a laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) module. With these monitoring modules, position error in laser focus on a 4" silicon wafer was kept below $4{\mu}m$, initially $51{\mu}m$, and laser power stability of a UV laser source was improved from 1.6% to 0.3%. Also, the material transition from polyimide to copper in machining of FCCL (flexible copper clad laminate) was successfully observed.
When focusing using an ultrasonic transducer array, a main lobe is formed in the focal region of an ultrasound field, but side lobes also arise around the focal region due to the leakage. Since the side lobes cannot be completely eliminated in the focusing process, they are responsible for subsequent ultrasound image quality degradation. To improve ultrasound image quality, a signal processing strategy to reduce side lobes is definitely in demand. To this end, quantitative determination of main and side lobes is necessary. We propose a theoretically and actually error-free method of exactly discriminating and separately computing the main lobe and side lobe parts in ultrasound image by computer simulation. We refer to images constructed using the main and side lobe signals as the main and side lobe images, respectively. Since the main and side lobe images exactly represent their main and side lobe components, respectively, they can be used to evaluate ultrasound image quality. Defining the average brightness of the main and side lobe images, the conventional to side lobe image ratio, and the main to side lobe image ratio as image quality metrics, we can evaluate image characteristics in speckle images. The proposed method is also applied in assessing the performance of side lobe suppression filtering. We show that the proposed method may greatly aid in the evaluation of medical ultrasonic images using computer simulations, albeit lacking the use of actual experimental data.
