The k-Nearest Neighbor classifier that does not require a training phase is appropriate for a variable number of classes problem like face recognition, Recently distance metric learning methods that is trained with a given data set have reported the significant improvement of the kNN classifier. However, the performance of a distance metric learning method is variable for each application, In this paper, we focus on the face recognition and compare the performance of the state-of-the-art distance metric learning methods, Our experimental results on the public face databases demonstrate that the Mahalanobis distance metric based on PCA is still competitive with respect to both performance and time complexity in face recognition.

Recently, the number of camera companies that produce commercializing interchangeable lens systems such as digital single lens reflex (DSLR) and compact system camera (CSC) lenses has been gradually increasing. These interchangeable lenses have various kinds of lenses with distinct specifications. In particular, the distance window among these specifications is the function most preferred by customers. Mechanical manual zoom and manual focus in these high end camera lenses with a distance window are in particular desirable specifications and are required for product quality. However, the AF lens group is linked to the zoom cam and moves. Because the AF lens group moves along with the object distance, we can not realize the distance window with only zoom locus calculation. In this paper, in order to solve the problem, we suggest an optical calculation method for a corrected AF zoom cam for an interchangeable lens with a distance window to achieve product differentiation and analyze the error in the calculation.
There are many types of interchangeable zoom lens in the digital single lens reflex camera and the compact digital still camera system in order to meet various specifications such as the field angle. Thus special cases for which the focus adjustment using only an auto-focus group is not available in the focal point correction (that is, the focus adjustment) of both wide and tele-zoom positions are sometimes generated. In order to make each BFL(back focal length, BFL) coincide at wide and tele-zoom positions with each designed BFL, focus adjustment processes must be performed at least in these two points within the zoom lens system. In this paper, we propose a method of focus adjustment by using the concept of focus sensitivity, and we calculate a limit on focus adjustment distance by means of statistical analysis.
Zoom tracking involves the automatic adjustment of the focus motor in response to the zoom motor movements for the purpose of keeping an object of interest in focus, and is typically achieved by moving the zoom and focus motors in a zoom lens module so as to follow the so-called "trace curve", which shows the in-focus motor positions versus the zoom motor positions for a specific object distance. Thus, one can simply implement zoom tracking by following the most closest trace curve after all the trace curve data are stored in memory. However, this approach is often prohibitive in practical implementation because of its large memory requirement. Many other zoom tracking methods such as GZT, AZT and etc. have been proposed to avoid large memory requirement but with a deteriorated performance. In this paper, we propose a new zoom tracking method called 'Approximate Feedback Zoom Tracking method (AFZT)' on DM36x-based IP network camera, which does not need large memory by approximating nearby trace curves, but generates better zoom tracking accuracy than GZT or AZT by utilizing focus value as feedback information. Experiments through real implementation shows the proposed zoom tracking method improves the tracking performance and works in real-time.

Seeing is an intelligent act. Retina is the most important part among the components of eye which is comprised of iris, pupil, lens, optic disk, and so forth. Because retina acts like a photo receiver to detect light from every object, if damaged, animals have a severe problem to live along with themselves and sometimes they lose their sight. In the ophthalmology, doctors use special instrument to see exact retina image of object and operate the surgery by rotating focus control knob. In this study, a basic test is done to achieve the auto focus control instrument. Specially made sledge and attenuator are installed on the optic bed to change the distance and laser power between the first reflective mirror and the second one. Control panel which is compiled by Visual C t t to control stepping motors ,laser power and photodiode are implemented with ADA-board.

A new algorithm using 1-dimensional wavelet transform for autofocusing of optical instrument has been developed. Previous studies based on the conventional frequency analysis have shown that as the lens-object distance approaches the optimum value, the high frequency energy in the corresponding image shows a consistent increase. However, as conventional frequency analysis techniques hide spatial distribution of each band energy, shape information in the original signal cannot be easily utilized. In this paper, a newly devised wavelet based focus measuring scheme is presented. Unlike other frequency domain analysis techniques that simply produce "frequency-only" spectra, wavelet analysis provides a "time-frequency" localized view of a given signal. As a result, both frequency band filtering and spatial distribution filtering can easily be realized. Depending on the proposed focus quality measuring algorithm, a fast and reliable automatic focus adjustment of optical devices could be implemented.
The purpose of this research is to demonstrate the necessity of conserving and maintaining eco-parks by estimating their economic value. Wonheung-ee Park in Sannam 3 District of Cheongju City was chosen as the subject and a quantitative estimation was conducted. The quantitative analysis utilized the hedonic price model that estimates the value of non-market goods. The summarized results of this study are follows. The subject park influenced the prices of its neighboring apartments. The most important factor was the distance between the park and the subject apartment. When the distance was longer than 400m, the impact was greatest. The quantitative assessment also showed that apartment prices and the distance between an apartment and the park had a negative relationship. When the distance increased by 1%, apartment prices decreased by 0.430%. This means that within a certain distance, the closer an apartment is to the park, the higher is the price. Demonstrating the economic value of eco-parks, this study also supports the importance of preserving eco-areas. It generally shows that when we develop a city, we should refrain destroying the ecosystem.
In this paper, we explore the utility of recently discovered multiple-antenna techniques (namely MIMO techniques) for medium access control (MAC) design and routing in mobile ad hoc networks. Specifically, we focus on ad hoc networks where the spatial diversity technique is used to combat fading and achieve robustness in the presence of user mobility. We first examine the impact of spatial diversity on the MAC design, and devise a MIMO MAC protocol accordingly. We then develop analytical methods to characterize the corresponding saturation throughput for MIMO multi-hop networks. Building on the throughout analysis, we study the impact of MIMO MAC on routing. We characterize the optimal hop distance that minimizes the end-to-end delay in a large network. For completeness, we also study MAC design using directional antennas for the case where the channel has a strong line of sight (LOS) component. Our results show that the spatial diversity technique and the directional antenna technique can enhance the performance of mobile ad hoc networks significantly.
This study analyze the transfer patterns of passengers in Seoul based on transit smart card data that was observed in 2010. The smart card records maximum four times of transfer and reports that approximately 90% of trips were less than one transfer and the remains were more than 2 transfers. We focus on trips with more than 3 transfers to figure out the relationship between transit service and regional connectivities. The results show that the average travel time, distance, fare are 45 minutes, 18.3km, and 1,119(KW) respectively. We develope a map for investigating transfer patterns at a regional level(dong and gu). By doing this, three types of transfers are observed as: 1) trips of which origin and destination is either same or near, 2) trips with short distance, and 3) long distance trip with low transit connectivities.
An efficient mobility management for mobile stations plays an important role in mobile communication network. In this study, we consider movement-based registration(MBR) and distance-based registration(DBR). Analytical models based on 2-dimensional random walk in hexagonal cell configuration are considered to analyze the performance of MBR and DBR. Especially, we focus on the derivation of the registration cost of DBR scheme by using two analytical methods and then show that DBR always outperforms MBR. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate optimal condition under various circumstances.
