The concentrations of dimethylsulfide (DMS) were determined from both seawater and the overlying atmosphere from a station located in the Masan Bay area during a ten-day field campaign period of January 1996. The resulting data were also used to derive saturation ratios (SR) as well as sea-to-air fluxes of DMS. The concentrations and fluxes of DMS for both reservoirs varied extensively over two to three orders of magnitude: DMS in air and seawater were measured at 9 to 4,300 pptv (mean: 600 $\pm$ 1, 170, N=18) and at 0.24 to 10 nM (4.0 $\pm$ 3.4, N=13), respectively, while its fluxes were found from 0.02 to 23 mol $m^{-2} day^{-1} (3.1 \pm 6.8, N=11)$. A comparative analysis between our data and previously reported ones indicate that its atmospheric concentrations are abnormalously high, but its seawater counterparts are slightly lower than expected. In light of high pollution levels of organic-rich materials in and the associated high biological productivity of the study area, the sea-to-air-fluxes derived are notably low relative to those values typically reported from the coastal areas. These complicated features of DMS distributions/fluxes in the study site indicate that the near-by port- based anthropogenic activities from various industrial plants strongly interfere with natural processes leading to the production and release of DMS. It was however striking to find out relatively strong signals of diel cycle in its saturation ratios, concentration gradients between seawater and atmosphere, and the associated fluxes. Although it is yet difficult to provide meaningful explanations for the observed phenomena, the existence of clear diel cycle in some DMS-related parameters suggests that the natural processes may nonetheless exert important controls on the regional cycling of atmospheric sulfur species, of particular DMS.
Atmospheric deposition and riverine waters were sampled throughout a year, to estimate the loading fluxes of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) into the Masan Bay and its vicinity, Korea. Atmospheric deposition fluxes of total PAHs in the surveyed area varied from 62.2 to 464 ${\mu}g/m^2/year$. Concentration of total PAHs in water samples from six rivers ranged from 34.6 to 239 ng/L. Contribution of the carcinogenic PAHs to the total PAHs occupied $38\%$ and $50\%$ for atmospheric deposition and river waters, respectively. Atmospheric deposition fluxes and water concentrations of PAHs were slightly low or moderate to those in locations from some countries. Correspondence analysis was used to investigate the loading characteristics of PAHs according to transport routes. Atmospheric deposition samples were corresponded to higher molecular aromatics of PAHs, while riverine water samples were associated with lower molecular weight of PAHs. The results indicate that the higher-molecular-weight PAHs can be primarily transported by atmosphere deposition and the lower-molecular-weight PAHs can be mainly contaminated by riverine discharge into the Masan Bay and its vicinity. Loadings fluxes of PAHs into the Masan Bay and its vicinity were 39.2 g/day via atmosphere and 10.3 g/day via rivers, showing that atmospheric input was about 4 times higher than riverine one. Therefore, in order to minimize the contamination burden of PAHs from terrestrial sources to the Masan Bay and its vicinity, the control and management of PAHs deriving from atmosphere will be necessary.
Background: Radiation dose rates in PRIDE facility is evaluated quantitatively for assessing radiation safety of workers because of large amounts of depleted uranium being handled in PRIDE facility. Even if direct radiation from depleted uranium is very low and will not expose a worker to significant amounts of external radiation. Materials and Methods: ORIGEN-ARP code was used for calculating the neutron and gamma source term being generated from depleted uranium (DU), and the MCNP5 code was used for calculating the neutron and gamma fluxes and dose rates. Results and Discussion: The neutron and gamma fluxes and dose rates due to DU on spherical surface of 30 cm radius were calculated with the variation of DU mass and density. In this calculation, an imaginary case in which DU density is zero was added to check the self-shielding effect of DU. In this case, the DU sphere was modeled as a point. In case of DU mixed with molten salt of 50-250 g, the neutron and gamma fluxes were calculated respectively. It was found that the molten salt contents in DU had little effect on the neutron and the gamma fluxes. The neutron and the gamma fluxes, under the respective conditions of 1 and 5 kg mass of DU, and 5 and $19.1g{\cdot}cm^{-3}$ density of DU, were calculated with the molten salt (LiCl+KCl) of 50 g fixed, and compared with the source term. As the results, similar tendency was found in neutron and gamma fluxes with the variation of DU mass and density when compared with source spectra, except their magnitudes. Conclusion: In the case of the DU mass over 5 kg, the dose rate was shown to be higher than the environmental dose rate. From these results, it is concluded that if a worker would do an experiment with DU having over 5 kg of mass, the worker should be careful in order not to be exposed to the radiation.

A commercial HVOF torch (originally designed for coating applications) has been modified as a high temperature flow source for material testing. In this study, a water cooled commercial Gardon gauge was used to measure heat fluxes at four locations away from the nozzle exit. The cooling water temperature data were used to calculate calorimetric heat fluxes at the same locations. The heat fluxes from both methods were compared and the calorimetric heat fluxes were found to be many times higher than the Gardon gauge heat fluxes. A hypothesis is applied to the calorimetric method to understand the discrepancy seen between the methods. The Gardon gauge heat fluxes are seen to be in the range of the hypothesized calorimetric calculations. This can be considered as a considerable validation for the hypothesis, but further refinement needed using appropriate numerical models.
Nutrient fluxes and sediment oxygen demands (SOD) were measured with intact sediment cores collected from three stations in the downstream of Nagdong River. The sediments were subjected to controlled oxic and hypoxic conditions and temperature gradients (from $10^{\circ}C$ to $30^{\circ}C$) of the overlying waters in laboratory batch system. The effect of temperature and labile layer thickness of the sediment on SOD were examined. $PO_4\;^{3-}$ and $NH_4\;^+$ fluxes were elevated above $20^{\circ}C$ and large mobilities were observed when they were coupled with a hypoxic and high-temperature condition. In the well oxygenated conditions, $PO_4\;^{3-}$ fluxes were negative or negligible but $NH_4\;^+$ fluxes ranged from 1.3 mg N $m^{-2}\;hr^{-1}$ to 2.3 $m^{-2}\;hr^{-1}$. Temperature quotients($Q_{10}$) of $PO_4\;^{3-}$ fluxes were 3.7 ${\sim}$ 7.3 ranges to have the most high values. $PO_4\;^{3-}$ and $NH_4\;^+$ fluxes had the logarithmic increase with temperature, while $NO_3\;^-$ was negatively absorbed to the sediment and linearly correlated with the temperature. $SiO_2$ fluxes showed no difference among oxic and hypoxic conditions and sediment texture. The nutrient fluxes would be closely correlated with pore water chemistry of sediments and activated by the top sediment layer composition such as labile organic matters or algal detritus. The ecological implications of the nutrient fluxes were discussed in terms of sources and sinks of nutrients coupled to algal productions in the Nagdong River.

Natural emissions of NOx from soils were measured at an agricultural corn field during 3 weeks of growing season in summer (from May to June) 1995. This experiment was conducted in an effort to characterize the role of soil NOx on tropospheric ozone formation in rural atmosphere, and understand the natural NOx emission mechanism with respect to soil parameters. NO fluxes were ranged from 3.1 ng Nm$^{-2}s^{-1}$ to 259.0 ng Nm$^{-2}s^{-1}$, and average NO flux during experimental period was found to be 47.6 $\pm$ 50.6 ng Nm$^{-2}s^{-1}$ with 732 number of data. Diurnal variation of NO flux was shown clearly with daytime maximum and nighttime minimum. NO fluxes were correlated with soil temperature. Exponential soil temperature dependency of NO fluxes was found with 0.0160$^{circ}C^{-1} of k and r^2=0.508$, which agrees well to the value estimated at corn fields in eastern United States. The significant increases of NO fluxes from agricultural soil were detected after applying N fertilizers to soil. THe mechanisms attributed to this are enhanced biological nitrification and denitrification. In the view of rural ozone formation, the roles of natural NO emissions are very essential, especially in NOx - limited region such as southern United States.
Because of the ozone layer depletion and global warming, new alternative refrigerants are being developed. In this study, evaporation heat transfer characteristics of carbon dioxide flowing upward in a vertical tube have been investigated by experiment. Before the test section, a pre-heater is installed to adjust the inlet quality of the refrigerant to a desired value. A smooth tube with outer diameter of 5 mm and length of 1.44 m was selected as a test tube. The test was conducted at mass fluxes of 212 to 530 kg/$m^2s$, saturation temperature of -5 to 20$^{\circ}C$, and heat fluxes of 20 to 45 kW/$m^2$. As the vapor quality and mass fluxes increase, the heat transfer coefficients of carbon dioxide are decreased, and the heat transfer coefficients increase when the heat fluxes and saturation temperatures increase.
Accurate ocean surface fluxes with high resolution are critical for understanding a mechanism of global climate. However, it is difficult to derive those fluxes by using ocean observation data because the number of ocean observation data is extremely small and the distribution is inhomogeneous. On the other hand. satellite data are characterized by the high density, the high resolution and the homogeneity. Therefore, it can be considered that we obtain accurate ocean surface by using satellite data. Recently we constructed ocean surface data sets mainly using satellite data. The data set is named by Japanese Ocean Flux data sets with Use of Remote sensing Observations (J-OFURO). Here, we introduce J-OFURO. The data set includes shortwave radiation, longwave radiation, latent heat flux, sensible heat flux, and momentum flux etc. Moreover, sea surface dynamic topography data are included in the data set. Radiation data sets covers western Pacific and eastern Indian Ocean because we use a Japanese geostationally satellite (GMS) to estimate radiation fluxes. On the other hand, turbulent heat fluxes are globally estimated. The constructed data sets are used and shows the effectiveness for many scientific studies.
Between June and November 2002, the atmospheric concentrations and dry deposition fluxes of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Chonju were measured four times each over five days. The total concentration of PAHs in ambient air was $84\;ng/m^3$, with about 90% existing in the vapor phase. Plots of log ($K_p$) vs. log (${P_L}^0$) indicated that PAHs partitioning was not in equilibrium and the particulate characteristics did not change with seasonal variations. The PAHs fluxes to a water surface sampler (WSS) and a dry deposition plate (DDP) were about 14.15 and $1.92\;{\mu}g/m^2/d$, respectively. The flux of the gaseous phase, acquired by subtracting the DDP from the WSS results, was about $12.23\;{\mu}g/m^2/d$. A considerable correlation was shown between the atmospheric concentrations and deposition fluxes in the gaseous phase, but not in the particulate phase, as the fluxes of the particulate phase were dependent on the physical velocity differences of the particulates based on the particle diameter.

The soil-to-air fluxes of three PAHs(Phenanthrene, Pyrene, Benzo(a)pyrene) from a laboratory contaminated forest soil were investigated in experimental microcosms. The effects of soil temperature(45$^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, 5$^{\circ}C$) and relative humidity(0%, 100%) were investigated according to existence of the humic layer(O layer) over the mineral layer(A layer). Volatilization flux experiments were carried out for a period of 96 hrs. The resulting PAHs volatilization fluxes from the different conditions were quantified and compared. In the mineral layer, highest volatilization flux among the individual PAHs was Phenanthrene >Pyrene> Benzo(a)pyrene on the conditions of 45 $^{\circ}C$, RH=100%. In the humic layer over the mineral layer, maximum volatilization flux was Phenanthrene on the condition of 45$^{\circ}C$, RH=0%. Results from flux experiments showed that volatilization fluxes of PAHs were dependent on soil temperature. Existance of humic layer over the mineral layer delayed transportation to the air of especially heaveir molecular PAHs. But, if humic layer is contained water sufficiently, it is possible that volatilization fluxes are enhanced by water convective flux according to variation of soil temperature and air relative humidity.
