  • In order to investigate applicability for 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate (TFEMA) produced by esterification of 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol(TFEA) and methacrylic acid(MA) using pervaporation membrane, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) composite membranes were prepared with glutaraldehyde(GA) onto porous polyethersulfone(PES) support. The degree of crosslinking and thickness of PVA coating layer were analyzed by swelling test and SEM(scanning electron microscopy), respectively. Pervaporation test was done with two feed mixures; TFEA/water, MA/water. The pervaporation data were obtained as a function of content of crosslinking agent, feed composition, and operating temperature, respectively. In case of TFEA-water(90/10 wt%) feed mixture at $80^{\circ}C$, the optimized membrane showed the high permeation flux of 1.5 $kg/m^2hr$ and separation factor of 320. In case of MA-water(90/10 wt%) feed mixture, the membranealso showed high permeation flux of 2.3 $kg/m^2hr$ and separation factor of 740 in same conditions.

  • Multi-pole anisotropic Sr-fertile sintered magnets has been studied by powder injection molding under applied magnetic field. The orientation of anisotropic Sr-ferrite powders higher than 80% during injection molding is achieved at the following conditions; apparent viscosity lower then 2500 poise in 1000 sec$\^$-1/ shear rate and applied magnetic field higher then 4 kOe. For the high fluidity and strength of injection molded compact, and the effective binder removal without defects during solvent extraction and thermal debinding, the optimum multi-binder composition is paraffin wax(PW)/carnauba wax(CW)/HDPE = 50/25/25 wt%. The rate of binder removal is proportional to the mean particle size of Sr-ferrite powders whereas it is inversely proportional to the content of Sr-ferrite powders and the sample thickness. The high magnetic properties of Sr-ferrite sintered magnets are; 3.8 kG of remanent flux density, 3.4 kOe of intrinsic coercivity, and 1.2 kG of surface flux density (1-mm-thick) in the direction of applied magnetic field.

  • To elucidate the trophic role of heterotrophic nano- and microplankton (HNMP), we investigated their biomass, community structure, and herbivory in three different water masses, namely, south of Polar Front (SPF), Polar Front Zone (PFZ), the Sub-Antarcitc Front (SAF) in the Drake Passage in the Southern Ocean, during the austral summer in 2002. We observed a spatial difference in the relative importance of the dominant HNMP community in these water masses. Ciliates accounted for 34.7% of the total biomass on an average in the SPF where the concentration of chlorophyll-a was low with the dominance of pico- and nanophytoplankton. Moreover, the importance of ciliates declined from the SPF to the SAF. In contrast, heterotrophic dinoflagellates (HDFs) were the most dominant grazers in the PFZ where the concentration of chlorophyll-a was high with the dominance of net phytoplankton. HNMP biomass ranged from 321.9 to 751.4 $mgCm^{-2}$ and was highest in the PFZ and lowest in the SPF. This result implies that the spatial dynamic of HNMP biomass and community was significantly influenced by the composition and concentration of phytoplankton as a food source. On an average, 75.6%, 94.5%, and 78.9% of the phytoplankton production were consumed by HNMP in the SPF, PFZ, and SAF, respectively. The proportion of phytoplankton grazed by HNMP was largely determined by the composition and biomass of HNMP, as well as the composition of phytoplankton. However, the herbivory of HNMP was one of the most important loss processes affecting the biomass and composition of phytoplankton particularly in the PFZ. Our results suggest that the bulk of the photosynthetically fixed carbon was likely reprocessed by HNMP rather than contributing to the vertical flux in Drake Passage during the austral summer in 2002.

  • To tap the feasibility of exploiting the 2$^{nd}$ phases as flux-pinning centers in the (Bi,Pb)$_2Sr_2Ca_2CuO_{10}$ superconductor, the size and the distribution of the precipitates have been controlled by changing reaction temperature and time, oxygen partial pressure Po$_2$ and annealing condition. Various annealing heat treatments were also conducted on the as-received 61 filament Bi-2223 tapes with Bi$_{1.8}Pb_{0.4}Sr_2Ca_{2.2}Cu_3O_8$ starting composition and annealed specimen were analyzed with XRD, SEM, EDS and TEM.. The grain size of (Ca,Sr)$_2$(BiPb)O$_4$ or Bi$_{0.5}Pb_3Sr_2Ca_2CuO_{\delta}$ was controllable by optimizing the heat treatment condition and critical current density (J$_c$) showed dependence on the size of the 2$^{nd}$ phases.

  • Ultrafiltration membranes based on anion charged poly(bis[4-(3-aminophenoxy)phenyl]sulfone pyromellite) imide derivatives (ACPI) were prepared by the phase inversion method. The polymers have good solubility in aprotic polar solvents. The composition of casting solution and the casting conditions played an important role in determining the permeation characteristics of membrane because the membrane structure could be controlled by the preparation conditions. The extent of fouling-repression was observed by the relative ratio of permeate flux ($J_t$)/pure water flux ($J_0$) and the membrane filtration index (MFI). The characteristics were measured by aqueous solution of bovine serum albumin (BSA) over a pH range of 2.5-9.0. The ACPI membrane having a hydrophilic property was less fouled than the membrane prepared from the original polyimide. With increasing the ion exchange capacity of ACPI membrane, th $\varepsilon$ relative ratio of flux was higher while the membrane filtration index was lower as compared with the original polyimide membrane. From the further away from isoelectric point of bovin serum albumin, the permeation was higher as well as the formation of fouling was more diminish. ACPI membranes having various their properties could be obtained. Further, it was proved that their permeation properties could be determined from the preparation conditions, various operating conditions, and dim $\varepsilon$ rent ion exchange capacity of anion charged polyimide derivatives.

  • We investigated the magnetic properties of High Flux-type $Ni_{x}Fe_{100-x}$(x=40∼50, wt.%) permalloy powders and dust cores. The powder was prepared by conventional gas atomization in mass production scale. At the composition of $Ni_{x}Fe_{55}$, saturation magnetization was maximum. In case of lower Ni content than X=45, the $M_{s}$, decreased largely with the decrease in Ni content, which is due to the invar effect. The permeability of compressed powder cores increased with the decrease in Ni content, which was considered to be due to the decrease in the magnetostriction. In addition, the dust core with Ni=45% showed the lowest core loss because of the increase in electrical resistivity leading to the low eddy current loss. From the better frequency dependence of permeability, larger Q value and superior DC bias characteristics of Ni=45% than those of Ni=50% core, it was confirmed that the 45%Ni-55%Fe powder alloy was better material for the dust core than commercial High Flux core materials.

  • Emerald ($3BeO{\cdot}Al_2O_3{\cdot}6SiO_2:Cr^{3+}$) single crystal was grown by temperature gradient reflux method with using Korean natural beryl. The flux of lithium-molibudenium-vanadium oxide system was made by means of mixing the 2 sort of flux which were differently melted $Mo_3-Li_2O$ and $V_2O_5-Li_2O$ each other. The optimum composition of flux was 3 mole ratio of molibudenium. vanadium oxides to lithium oxide ($(MoO_3+V_2O_5)/Li_2O$), flux additives were substituted more less then 0.2 mole% of $K_2O$ or $Na_2O$ to the $Li_2O$ amount. The melting concentration of mixing beryl material was 3~10% content to the flux, that of $Cr_2O_3$ color dopant was 1% to the beryl amount. In the crystal growing apparatus with temperature gradient in the 3 zone furnace which was separated into the block of melt, growth and return, the solution have got to circulate continuously between $1100^{\circ}C$ and $1000^{\circ}C$ in steady state. When thermal fluctuation was treated to during 2 hrs once on a day at 950~$1000^{\circ}C$ in growth zone, the supersaturation solution was maintained, controled and emerald single crystal can be grown large crystal which was prevented from the nucleation of microcrystallite. The preferencial growth direction of hexagonal columnar emerald single crystal was the c(0001) plane of botton side and vertical to the m(1010) plane of post side.

  • Magnetic flux ropes, often observed during intervals of interplanetary coronal mass ejections, have long been recognized to be critical in space weather. In this work, we focus on magnetic flux rope structure but on a much smaller scale, and not necessarily related to interplanetary coronal mass ejections. Using near-Earth solar wind advanced composition explorer (ACE) observations from 1998 to 2016, we identified a total of 309 small-scale magnetic flux ropes (SMFRs). We compared the characteristics of identified SMFR events with those of normal magnetic cloud (MC) events available from the existing literature. First, most of the MCs and SMFRs have similar values of accompanying solar wind speed and proton densities. However, the average magnetic field intensity of SMFRs is weaker (~7.4 nT) than that of MCs (~10.6 nT). Also, the average duration time and expansion speed of SMFRs are ~2.5 hr and 2.6 km/s, respectively, both of which are smaller by a factor of ~10 than those of MCs. In addition, we examined the geoeffectiveness of SMFR events by checking their correlation with magnetic storms and substorms. Based on the criteria Sym-H < -50 nT (for identification of storm occurrence) and AL < -200 nT (for identification of substorm occurrence), we found that for 88 SMFR events (corresponding to 28.5 % of the total SMFR events), substorms occurred after the impact of SMFRs, implying a possible triggering of substorms by SMFRs. In contrast, we found only two SMFRs that triggered storms. We emphasize that, based on a much larger database than used in previous studies, all these previously known features are now firmly confirmed by the current work. Accordingly, the results emphasize the significance of SMFRs from the viewpoint of possible triggering of substorms.

  • The RBSPICE (Radiation Belt Storm Probes Ion Composition Experiment) is one of five instrument suites onboard the twin Van Allan Probes (or Radiation Belt Storm Probes; RBSP), launched August 30, 2012 by NASA. One of science targets of RBSPICE instrument is to determine "how changes in that ring current affect the creation, acceleration, and loss of radiation belt particles?". For that purpose, it measures ions and electrons simultaneously. Ion's energy range is from ~20 keV to ~1 MeV and electron's energy channel is from ~35 keV to 1 MeV in order to provide supplementary information about the radiation belts. In this paper, we investigate a reliability of the electron flux measured from the RBSPICE by comparing with ECT (The Energetic Particle, Composition and Thermal Plasma Suite) data. We found there is a critical proton contamination problem in the electron channels of ~ 1MeV of RBSPICE observations during one moderate storm event of Sym H ~ -76 nT on March 1, 2013.

  • Global climate change will alter many such properties of the Southern Ocean as temperature, circulation, stratification, and sea-ice extent. Such changes are likely to influence the species composition and activity of Antarctic marine microorganisms (protists and bacteria) which playa major role in deter-mining the concentration of atmospheric $CO_2$ and producing precursors of cloud condensation nuclei. Direct impacts of climate change on Antarctic marine microorganisms have been determined for very few species. Increasing water temperature would be expected to result in a southward spread of pelagic cyanobacteria, coccolithophorids and others. Growth rates of many species would be expected to increase slightly but nutrient limitation, especially micronutrients, is likely to result in a negligible increase in biomass. The extent of habitats would be reduced for those organisms presently living close to the upper limit of their thermal tolerance. Increased UVB irradiance is likely to favour the growth of those organisms tolerant of UVB and may change the trophic structure of marine communities. Indirect effects, especially those as a consequence of a diminution of the amount of sea-ice and increased upper ocean stratification, are predicted to lead to a change in species composition and impacts on both trophodynamics and vertical carbon flux.
