  • In this paper, our effort to apply 3-D Virtual Reality system for stereoscopic visualization of flow data is briefly described. This study is an extension of our previous and on-going research efforts to develop DATA(Data Analysis and Visualization Application) program, which is a data visualization program developed by using Qt as GUI development environment and OpenGL as graphic library. The program is developed upon the framework of object-oriented programming and it was originally developed by using Qt 3.3.3 environment. In this research the program is converted into a Qt 4.3.3-compatible version, and this new version is developed on Visual Studio 2005. And to achieve a stereoscopic viewing capability, two graphic windows are used to render its own viewing image for the lift and right eye respectively. These two windows are merged into one image using 3D monitor and the viewers can see the data visualization results with stereoscopic depth effects by using polarizing glasses. In this paper three dimensional data visualization with stereoscopic technique combined with 3D Monitor is demonstrated, and the current achievement would be a good start-up for further development of low-cost high-quality stereoscopic data visualization system.

  • The purpose of the present study is to examine the flow characteristics of ER fluids between 2 port and 3 port rectangular tube brass electrodes. ER fluid is made silicon oil mixed with $2-3wt\%$ starch having hydrous particles. Flow visualization of the ER fluids were obtained by CCD camera measuring those of the clusters using an image processing technique. This research found the flow $rate(Q_L)$ with 0 kV /mm, 0.5kV/mm and 1.0kV/mm for $Q_L\;=\;0,\;0$ and $5.73cm^3/s$. When the strength of the electric field increased, the cluster of ER fluids are clearly strong along the rectangular tube and the flow rate(Q) decreased.

  • This thesis presents applications of three dimensional visualization technique based on shear-warp volume rendering to medical information. Volume rendering is compared to surface rendering and acceleration technique is also presented. The presented rendering techniques by using three-dimensional arrays of data are a widely used representation for computational fluid dynamics and geological structures as well as medical information.

  • This paper briefly introduces the work done up to 1998 during the past twenty years for numerical modeling of ocean process focussing on the neighbouring seas of Korean Peninsula. Modeling of global ocean dynamics has also been performed as a pathway to understand the regional ocean dynamics. The ocean simulation produces a vast amount of multidimensional multivariate dataset therefore adoption of scientific and technical visualization techniques were essential to properly understand the physics involved.

  • A post-processing program based on the OOP(Object-Oriented Programming) concept has been developed for visualization of MRI. User-friendly GUl(Graphic User Interface) has been built on the base of MFC(Microsoft Foundation Class). The program is organized as modules by classes based on VTK-library, and these classes are made to function through inheritance and cooperation which are an important and valuable concept of object-oriented programming. The major functions of this post-processor program are introduced and demonstrated, which include contour plot, surface plots, cut plot and clip plot as well as view manipulation (translation, rotation, scaling etc).

  • Recently, several advanced flow visualization techniques such as Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) including stereo PIV, holographic PIV, and dynamic PIV have been developed. These advanced techniques have strong potential as the experimental technology which can be used for verifying numerical simulation. In addition, there would be indispensable in solving complicated thermo-fluid flow problems not only in the industrial fields such as automotive, space, electronics, aero- and hydro-dynamics, steel, and information engineering, but also in the basic research fields of medical science, bio-medical engineering, environmental and energy engineering etc. Especially, NT Nano Technology) and BT (Bio Technology) strongly demand these advanced measurement techniques, because it is difficult for conventional methods to observe most complicated nano- and bio-fluidic phenomena. In this paper, the basic principle of these advanced visualization techniques and their practical applications which cannot be resolved by conventional methods, such as flow in automotive HVAC system, ship and propeller wake, three-dimensional flow measurement in micro-conduits, and flow around a circulating cylinder will be introduced.

  • Ion exchange membrane can transfer only cation or anion in electrically conductive fluids. Recent studies have revealed that such selective ion transport can initiate electroconvective instability, resulting vortical fluid motions on the membrane. This so-called electroconvective vortex (a.k.a. electroconvection (EC)) has been in the spotlight for enhancing an ion flux in electrochemical systems. However, EC under shear flow has not been investigated yet, although most related systems operate under pressure-driven flows. In this study, we present the direct visualization platform of EC under shear flow. On the transparent silicone rubber, microscale channels were fabricated between ion exchange membranes, while allowing microscopic visualization of fluid flow and ion concentration changes on the membranes. By using this platform, not only we visualize the existence of EC under shear flow, its unique characteristics are also identified: i) unidirectional vortex pattern, ii) its advection along the shear flow, and iii) shear-sheltering of EC vortices.
