  • Fluidic valve is adopted in APR1400 to control passively the flow rate of cooling water from the safety injection tank. It is necessary to establish independent evaluation guideline for the flow characteristics of fluidic valve in order to secure safety. Three dimensional numerical model for fluidic valve is developed and numerical results are compared with experimental data obtained at KAERI in order to verify numerical simulation. Also influence of the grid number and the turbulence model were investigated. In addition, variation of flow rate is investigated at various elapsed times after valve operating, and flow characteristics are analyzed at low and high flow rate conditions, respectively.

  • The limitation of flow control for a bistable fluidic valve has been investigated. The physical model of the fluidic valve includes two main flow outlets and two control flow inlets. The experiments were conducted with pressure regulators, mass flow meters, and piezo sensors to analyze flow switching characteristics of the fluidic valve. The experimental data such as pressure and mass flow rate of control flows and the switching time of the main flow was obtained with various operating conditions. The operation limit of the fluidic valve is identified, and a model equation for pre-estimating the minimum control pressure to switch the direction of the main flow has been proposed.

  • Polymer micro-fluidic devices were fabricated with laser processes. A UV laser and a femto laser were used to machine polymer micro-fluidic structures directly. This laser direct machining process suits the need of rapid prototyping, as in many applications changes from the original design are often required. As examples, two polymer micro-systems were developed: a micro-check valve and a micro diffuser pump. The micro fluidic devices can be applied for many applications such as clinical diagnostics and drug delivery. Advantages and disadvantages using polymers as a material for micro-fluidic applications are discussed.

  • This paper reports on the fluid flow simulation results of a multilayer type piezoelectric valve. The mechanical and fluidic analysis are done by finite element method. The designed structure is normally closed type using buckling effect, which is consist of three separate structures; a valve seat die, an actuator die and a MLCA(Multilayer Type Ceramic Actuator). It is confirmed that the complete laminar flow and the lowest flow leakage are strongly depend on the valve seat geometry. In addition, turbulent flow was occurs in valve outlet according to increase seat dimension, height and inlet pressure. From this, we was deducts the optimum geometry of the valve seat and diaphragm deflection that have an great influence fluid flow in valve. Thus, it is expected that our simulation results would be apply for piezoelectric applications such as valve and pump, fluidic control systems.

  • A performance analysis program of a disk type fluidic valve was developed to predict a chamber pressure and a response time. A parametric study of this device was performed by using scattering plot method. A sensitivity of Mach number at a nozzle outlet showed the highest value about a outlet diameter of nozzle. An inlet flow rate is the most important parameter to design the fluidic valve because it has high sensitivity value both a outlet velocity and a response time.

  • Though a micro pump is a crucial element in miniaturized bio-fluidic systems or drug delivery systems, it has some intrinsic disadvantages such as backward flow, pulsation of flow, low repeatability and producibility, and high cost. To overcome these limitation, a PZT disc actuated micro pump including a novel ring-shaped multi-flap check valve is introduced. To enhance the performance of the micro pump, the static behaviour of flap valve module and the micro fluidic behavior of fluids are numerically modelled and analyzed. As results of the numerical analysis, the optimal dimension and configuration of the ring-shaped multi flap valve are $1{\times}0.05$ mm and 2 (inlet side)${\times}1$ (outlet side) type. The obtained maximum flow rates and flow resolution are about 90 ml/min and 30 ${\mu}l$/stroke respectively.

  • One of the concerns in micro fluidic valve designs is that of reverse direction leakage. This paper designs and fabricates a new fluidic valve to achieve zero leakage. The design uses flapper and nozzle elements. In the forward direction the working fluid pushes the flapper upward to allow flow. In the reverse direction, the flapper pushes against the orifice seat, and thus, no flow can be generated, unless the flapper or nozzle element breaks. The nozzle element fabrication involves fabricating an orifice by wet etching of (100) wafer, The flapper element fabrication involves $20{\mu}m$ deep patterning of the negative image of the flapper, followed by wet etching from backside. Flow experiments were conducted with DI water as the working fluid, and the results are compared to analytical predictions. The results show that the developed flapper-nozzle valve achieves a true diodic flow characteristic.

  • The present paper provides the design specifications and working principle of flow controlling vortex valve which will be adopted in a Korean next generation reactor (APR1400). The vortex valve is installed inside the pressurized safety injection tank of APR1400, and it passively controls the water discharge flowrate from the tank. In the present study, the performance of the vortex valve have been evaluated throughout the repeated experiments in the full-scale test facility called VAPER(VAlve Performance Evaluation Rig). Based on the experimental results, it is confirmed that the currently developed vortex valve satisfies the major performance requirements of APR1400 plant design in view of the peak discharge flowrate, pressure loss coefficient, and total discharge duration time. To achieve the highest quality of the experimental results, a quality assurance program for vortex valve tests has been strictly applied.

The mechanical and fluidic analysis are done by finite element method. The designed structure is normally closed microvalve using buckling effect, which is consist of three separate structures; a valve seat die, an actuator die and a small piezoelectric actuator.
