  • Minimum clearance between the piston seal groove of a piston and cylinder bore to ensure against extrusion of the piston seal and leakage of working fluids is an important design parameter for a seal designer in hydraulic cylinder application. Contact force, critical pressure at which extrusion occurs, leakage rate, fluid film thickness and friction force have been analyzed for some design parameter such as clearance between cylinder wall piston, depth of rectangular groove and pressure of sealed hydraulic fluid. In this paper, we analyze displacement and stress of ACGT seal by finite element analysis to understand Contact Behaviour Characters

  • A model for a pressure drop of water vapor flow across tube banks in a horizontal tube absorber of an absorption chiller/heater using LiBr solution as a working fluid has been developed based on a commercial 20RT(70kW) absorption chiller/heater. The numerical results show that the characteristic of the pressure drop in the shell side of the horizontal tube absorber is completely different from that in a conventional shell and tube heat exchanger. Especially, solution film thickness has significant influence on the vapor pressure drop in the horizontal tube absorber. In addition, the effects by the tube diameters, the longitudinal pitch to diameter ratio, and Reynolds number of the vapor flow, on the vapor pressure drop have been studied to evaluate the compactness of tube absorber. It was found that the vapor pressure drop decreases as tube diameter increases, the longitudinal pitch to diameter ratio increases, and Reynolds number of the vapor flow decreases. A comparison of the present study results with well-established experimental and numerical results showed a good overall agreement.

  • ER(electro-rheological) fluids, which are represented as Bingham fluids, have large and reversible changes in yield shear stresses by application of an electric field. In this paper, ER fluids are employed in a short squeeze film damper. The modified Reynolds equation for an ER short squeeze film damper is theoretically solved to get the approximate solutions of pressure profiles and damping coefficients. The theoretical approximate solutions are compared with numerical ones and both results are coincided very well. Both the direct and cross coupled damping coefficients substantially increase with increasing the yield shear stress of ER fluids. Furthermore, the synchronous response analysis of a rigid rotor supported on ER short squeeze film dampers is performed to show the improved damping capability of an ER short squeeze film damper.

  • In this paper, the effect of oil conditions in rotor dynamic behaviors of a FFRB (Fully-Floating Ring Bearing) is investigated. Through the characteristic of a FFRB has two films, it has several advantages such as less friction loss and better stability over a wide speed range. However, it is difficult to supply a oil to the inner film. Thus, turbocharger makers have been paid significant attention to the lubrication of a FFRB because of its importance. This work focuses on the influence of oil inlet pressure and temperature. The methodologies of computational simulation and experimental test were used to estimate the rotor dynamic behaviors. In experimental test, the single-scroll turbocharger for the 1.4L diesel engine was used. The results show that the oil inlet pressure and temperature will place considerable influence on the rotor response. Oil conditions affect RSR (Ring Speed Ratio) which is cause of sub-synchronous vibrations, which also cause of oil whirling and whip even a critical speed. At higher speed range, the phenomenon of self-excited vibrations which is cause of instability of fluid whirl is investigated through the orbit shapes that consist of small orbit and large amplitude orbit. It is shown that some performance of a FFRB can be controlled by the conditions of oil supply. Finally, it was revealed that the oil induced operating conditions will strongly affect the turbocharger rotor dynamics behaviors.

  • The lubrication state between contacting bodies with rolling and sliding under loaded condition is generally understood by the conception shown in Figure 1. When the lubricating oil film formation between facing bodies is good enough to separate these bodies by the hydrodynamic pressure, this state is called by the expression of "hydrodynamic lubrication". The thickness of oil film is so large that the lubricating oil between facing bodies behaves as fluid and metal-to-metal contact between surface roughness asperities on facing bodies does not occur. When the oil film thickness becomes thinner or when the surface roughness height becomes larger, top of surface roughness asperities on facing bodies reaches very near to each other and there the oil or absorbed oil molecules on the surface of facing bodies behave no more as fluid. Partly metal-to-metal contact of surface roughness asperities occurs. Such lubrication state is called by the expression "mixed-lubrication". When the oil film thickness becomes more thinner or surface roughness height becomes larger, metal-tometal contact or contact via absorbed oil molecules dominate at most of the part in contact zone. Such state is called by the expression "boundary lubrication". Schematic representation of these three regimes of lubrication is shown in Figure 1.rication is shown in Figure 1.

  • GaAs film growth process from trimethylgallium(TMGa) and tertiary-butylarsine(TBAs) using a horizontal MOCVD reactor was numerically studied to explain the experimental result that the decreasing surface reaction rate as the increasing partial pressure of group III species. Using the non-linear model based on the Langmuir isotherm which considers the adsorption and desorption of molecules, film deposition over the entire reactor scale was predicted by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with the aid of the parameters obtained from the selective area growth (SAG) technique. CFD Results using the non-linear surface reaction model with the parameters determined from the SAG experiments predicted too high film growth rate compared to the measured values at the downstream region where the temperature was decreased abruptly. The pairs of ($k_s^n$, K) from the numerical simulations was $(2.52{\times}10K^{-6}mol/m^2/s,\;1.6{\times}10^5m^3/mol)$, whereas the experimentally determined was $(3.58{\times}10^{-5}mol/m^2/s,\;6.9{\times}10^5m^3/mol)$.

  • The tilting pad journal bearings have been widely used to support high pressure/high rotating turbine rotors owing to their inherent dynamic stability characteristics. However, fatigue damages in the upper unloaded pads and the break of locking pins etc. by pad fluttering are continuously taken place in the actual steam turbines. The purpose of this paper is to develop a new bearing model that can prevent bearing problems effectively by pad fluttering in a tilting pad journal bearing. A new bearing model which has a wedged groove is suggested from the studies of fluttering mechanism performed by previously research works. The fluttering characteristics of the upper unloaded pad are studied experimentally in order to verify the reliability of a new bearing model. It can be known that the phenomenon of pad fluttering nearly does not occurred in the new bearing model under the various experimental conditions. And it is observed that any kinds of bearing failures by pad fluttering does not detect in the application of acture steam turbines.

  • Results of theoretical investigations on acoustical properties of hydrodynamic proceeding bearings are presented. Nonlinear analysis of rotor bearing system including rotor imbalance is performed in order to obtain acoustical properties of hydrodynamic proceeding bearings. Furthermore, a cavitation algorithm, implementing the Jakobsson-Floberg-Olsson boundary condition, is adopted to predict cavitation regions in a fluid film. Acoustical properties of hydrodynamic proceeding bearings are identified through frequency analysis of pressure fluctuation calculated from the nonlinear transient analysis. The results show that the acoustical frequency spectra of hydrodynamic proceeding bearings are pure tone spectra, containing the frequency of the shaft rotation and its super-harmonics. The analysis also shows that the super-harmonics are predominant at neighborhood of the fluid film reformation and rupture regions.

  • This study reports the fluidic handling method using hydrophobic patterns inside PDMS microchannels. In order to obtain hydrophobic patterns, we pattern fluorcarbon(FC) film surfaces by lift-off process. FC films are deposited by spin coating method and plasma polymerization method. Hydrophobic surfaces are used as the barriers to control fluid flow. Injected liquid is spontaneously filled up inside PDMS-microchannels by the capillary action. Liquid flow stops when it meets hydrophobic regions which can be the barrier against fluid flow. Then, again, when liquid is pressurized externally, liquid can move toward another hydrophilic region by external air pressure. Contact angle analyses are performed on fluorocarbon films to estimate the wettability of film surfaces.

  • Chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) is a manufacturing process that uses controlled wear to planarize dielectric and metallic layers on silicon wafers. CMP experiments revealed that a sub-ambient film pressure developed at the wafer/pad interface. Additionally, dishing occurs in CMP processes when the copper-in-trench lines are removed at a rate higher than the barrier layer. In order to study dishing across a stationary wafer during polishing, dishing maps were created. Since dishing is a function of the total contact pressure resulting from the applied load and the fluid pressure, the hydrodynamic pressure model was refined and used in an existing model to study copper dishing. Density maps, highlighting varying levels of dishing across the wafer face at different radial positions, were developed. This work will present the results.
