With all the recent progresses in computer hardware and software technology, the animation of fluids in real-time is still among the most challenging issues of computer graphics. The fluid animation is carried out in two steps - the physical simulation of fluids immediately followed by the visual rendering. The physical simulation is usually accomplished by numerical methods utilizing the particle dynamics equations as well as the fluid mechanics based on the Navier-Stokes equations. Particle dynamics method is usually fast in calculation, but the resulting fluid motion is conditionally unrealistic. The methods using Navier-Stokes equation, on the contrary, yield lifelike fluid motion when properly conditioned, yet the complexity of calculation restrains this method from being used in real-time applications. This article presents a rapid fluid animation method by using the continuum-based fluid mechanics and the enhanced particle dynamics equations. For real-time rendering, pre-integrated volume rendering technique was employed. The proposed method can create realistic fluid effects that can interact with the viewer in action, to be used in computer games, performances, installation arts, virtual reality and many similar multimedia applications.
To determine the factors which affect the flow of dentinal fluid through cat dentinal tubules in vivo, the flow of fluid was measured by observing the movement of the fat droplets of dilute milk in a glass capillary with a microscope connected to the monitor. After measuring the exposed area of dentin, hydraulic conductances of dentin were calculated. The mean pressure which stoped the outward flow of dentinal fluid was 9.5mmHg. The hydraulic conductance of dentin under the condition of pulp exposed was increased by 21 % from that under the condition of dentin exposed. Under the conditions of pulp cut and pulp removed, the hydraulic conductances of dentin were increased by 22 % and 31 % respectively from that under the condition of dentin exposed. These results show that the direction and rate of dentinal fluid flow in cat dentin is affected mainly by the hydrostatic pressure of interstitial fluid of pulp tissue in the state of low compliance. Both of the osmotic effect produced by the protein constituents of interstitial fluid across the odontoblast tell layer and the change of interstitial fluid pressure produced by the state of the microcirculation of the pulp also affect the direction and rate of dentinal fluid in some degree.
Using fluid dampers to connect adjacent buildings for enhancing their seismic resistant performance has been recently investigated but limited to linear elastic adjacent buildings only. This paper presents a study of inelastic seismic response of adjacent buildings linked by fluid dampers. A nonlinear finite element planar model using plastic beam element is first constructed to simulate two steel frames connected by fluid dampers. Computed linear elastic seismic responses of the two steel frames with and without fluid dampers under moderate seismic events are then compared with the experimental results obtained from shaking table tests. Finally, elastic-plastic seismic responses of the two steel frames with and without fluid dampers are extensively computed, and the fluid damper performance on controlling inelastic seismic response of the two steel frames is assessed. The effects of the fundamental frequency ratio and structural damping ratio of the two steel frames on the damper performance are also examined. The results show that not only in linear elastic stage but also in inelastic stage, the seismic resistant performance of the two steel frames of different fundamental frequencies can be significantly enhanced if they are properly linked by fluid dampers of appropriate parameters.
Many tanks are installed in ship and marine structures. They are often in contact with inner or outer fluid, like ballast, fuel and cargo tanks. Fatigue damages are sometimes observed in these tanks which seem to be caused by resonance with exciting force of engine and propeller. Vibration characteristics of these thin walled tanks in contact with fluid near engine and propeller are strongly affected by added mass of containing fluid. Therefore it is essentially important to estimate the added mass effect to predict vibration of the tanks. Many authors have studied vibration of cylindrical and rectangular tanks containing fluid. Few research on dynamic interaction among tank walls through fluid are reported in the vibration of rectangular tanks recently. In case of rectangular tanks, structural coupling between adjacent panels and effect of vibration modes of multiple panels on added mass have to be considered. In the previous report, A numerical tool of vibration analysis of a 3-dimensional tank is developed by using finite element method for plates and boundary element method for fluid region. In this paper, the coupling effect between panels of a tank on added mass of containing fluid, the effect of structural constraint between panels on each vibration mode for fluid region and mode characteristics in accordance with changing breadth of the plates are investigated numerically and discussed.

Abstract: In the oil hydraulic piston pumps the clearance between the valve plate and cylinder block plays an important role for volumetric and overall efficiency. Thus, adequate lubricational fluid film is needed for the interface. In this study, fluid film thickness is measured by a gap sensor and a slip ring under operational conditions to observe the behavior of the lubrication mechanism in detail. To investigate the effect according to the valve plate types in view of the fluid film, three different types were designed. Leakage flow rate and shaft torque were also measured to clarify the effect according to the valve plate types. A broad range of experiments were conducted to provide reasonable data on the effect of fluid film. In this experiments two main parameters were found, of which the one is the discharge pressure and the other is valve plate geometry. As a result, we found that the spherical valve plate could get more stable fluid film thickness, maintain good efficiency for high pressure range than the other types.

A simply supported pipe conveying fluid and the moving masses upon it constitute this vibrational system. The equation of motion is derived by using Lagrange's equation. The influence of the velocity and the inertia force of the moving masses and the velocities of fluid flow in the pipe have been studied on the dynamic behavior of a simply supported pipw by numerical method. The velocities of fluid flow are considered within its critical values of the simply supported pipe without the moving masses upon it. Their coupling effects on the transverse vibration of a simply supported pipe are inspected too. The dynamic deflection of the simply supported pipe conveying fluid is increased by a coupling of the moving masses and the velocities of the moving masses and the fluid flow. When four or five regular interval masses move on the simply supported pipe conveying fluid, the amplitude of the simply supported pipe conveying fluid is small at low velocity of the masses, but at high velocity of the masses the deflection of midspan of the pipe is increased by coupling with the numbers and magnitude of the masses. The time which produce the maximum dynamic deflection of the simply supported pipe is delayed according to the increment of the number of moving masses.
Cell-free nucleic acids (cf-NAs) originate in trophoblasts and are detected in the maternal plasma. Using innovative bioinformatic technologies such as next-generation sequencing, cf-NAs in the maternal plasma have been rapidly applied in prenatal genetic screening for fetal aneuploidy. Amniotic fluid is a complex and dynamic fluid that provides growth factors and protection to the fetus. In 2001, the presence of cf-NA in amniotic fluid was reported. Amniotic fluid is in direct contact with the fetus and is derived from fetal urine and maternal and fetal plasma. Therefore, these genetic materials have been suggested to reflect fetal health and provide real-time genetic information regarding fetal development. Recently, several studies evaluated the global gene expression changes of amniotic fluid cell-free RNA according to gestational age. In addition, by analyzing the transcriptome in the amniotic fluid of fetal aneuploidy, potential key pathways and novel biomarkers for fetal chromosomal aneuploidy were identified. Here, we review the current knowledge of cell-free RNA in amniotic fluid and suggest future research directions.

In ship structure, many parts are in contact with inner or outer fluid as stern, ballast and oil tanks. Fatigue damages are sometimes observed in these tanks which seem to be caused by resonance with exciting force of engine and propeller. Vibration characteristics of these tanks in contact with fluid are significantly affected by fluid coupling effect. Therefore it is important to exactly predict vibration characteristics of tank structure. In order to estimate the vibration characteristics, the fluid-structure interaction(FSI) problem should be solved precisely. But it is difficult to estimate exactly the magnitude of the fluid coupling effect because it has some problems such as a fluid-structure interaction, influence by the free surface, vibration modes of structural panels and depth of water. In this paper, with fluid coupling effect, the effect of structural constraint between panels on the vibration characteristics are investigated numerically and discussed.
The paper deals with the study of the dispersion of quasi-Lamb waves in a hydro-elastic system consisting of an elastic plate, barotropic compressible inviscid fluid, and rigid wall. The motion of the plate is described using the exact equations of elastodynamics, however, the flow of the fluid using the linearized equations and relations of the Navier-Stokes equations. The corresponding dispersion equation is obtained and this equation is solved numerically, as a result of which the corresponding dispersion curves are constructed. The main attention is focused on the effect of the presence of the fluid and the effect of the fluid layer thickness (i.e., the fluid depth) on the dispersion curves. The influence of the problem parameters on the dispersion curves related to the quasi-Scholte wave is also considered. As a result of the analyses of the numerical results, concrete conclusions are made about the influence of the fluid depth, the rigid wall restriction on the fluid motion, and the material properties of the constituents on the dispersion curves. During the analyses, the zeroth and the first four modes of the propagating waves are considered.
In the present study, the total hydrodynamic pressure exerted by the fluid on walls of rectangular tanks due to horizontal excitations of different frequencies, is investigated by pressure based finite element method. Fluid within the tanks is invisid, compressible and its motion is considered to be irrotational and it is simulated by two dimensional eight-node isoparametric. The walls of the tanks are assumed to be rigid. The total hydrodynamic pressure increases with the increase of exciting frequency and has maximum value when the exciting frequency is equal to the fundamental frequency. However, the hydrodynamic pressure has decreasing trend for the frequency greater than the fundamental frequency. Hydrodynamic pressure at the free surface is independent to the height of fluid. However, the pressure at base and mid height of vertical wall depends on height of fluid. At these two locations, the hydrodynamic pressure decreases with the increase of fluid depth. The depth of undisturbed fluid near the base increases with the increase of depth of fluid when it is excited with fundamental frequency of fluid. The sloshing of fluid with in the tank increases with the increase of exciting frequency and has maximum value when the exciting frequency is equal to the fundamental frequency of liquid. However, this vertical displacement is quite less when the exciting frequency is greater than the fundamental frequency.
