  • Numerical calculation has been performed to investigate the transport phenomena in the horizontal reactor which has two different gas inlets for MOCVD(metalorganic chemical vapor deposition). The full elliptic governing equations for continuity, momentum, energy and chemical species are solved by using the commercial code FLUENT. It is investigated how thermal characteristics, reactor geometry, and the operating parameters affect flow fields, mass fraction of each reactants. The numerical simulations demonstrate that flow rate of each species, inlet geometry of the reactor, and its distance from the susceptor as well as the inclination of upper wall of reactor can be used effectively to optimize reactor performance. The commonly used idealized boundary conditions are also investigated to predict flow phenomena in the actual deposition system.

  • Now a days Automobiles are becoming more important in our life, the study on piston of engine is needed because, piston's cooling and lubrication of piston have an effect on the life and efficiency of engine directly. So, this study is about nozzle part of oil jet for cooling piston in the automotive engine. Piston exposes combustion gas of over $2000^{\circ}C$ and is shocked high pressure at the time of explosion shortly. Furthermore strong friction occurs by high speed rotation. The cooling system is considered from oil jet to piston. The previous system cooled the lower part of piston only. So, efficiency was low. To improve this system, make the oil gallery in the piston, and oil flows into the gallery. The value of oil flow rate into the gallery is important. Consequently, the point of this study is the research of investigation of flow characteristics for variable Re number. This study has been modelled by a commercial CFD code FLUENT, allowing to assess its validity

저탄장 시설에 설치된 방풍벽 높이에 따른 비산탄진 확산특성에 관한 수치해석 (Numerical Investigation on Influence of Windbreak Wall Height on Dust Scattering Characteristics)

  • This study reports numerically the characteristics of dust scattering around the coal storage pile yards, substantially affected by the windbreak wall height. The dust scattering is closely associated with the frictional effect of wind flows as well as the pressure variation that consequently affect the dust particle behavior. In the present study, with the use of the commercial code of FLUENT, the distribution of wind velocity and pressure are predicted around coal storage pile yard for four different heights of the wind break wall. From the results, it was found that for the case 1 with the outer windbreak wall height of 3 m and inner windbreak wall height of 6 m, the amount of scattering dust for a year was estimated to be 1451 kg, whereas for the case 4 where a height of outer windbreak wall is 10 m and a height of inner windbreak wall is 16 m, the amount of scattering dust for a year was 358 kg. It shows that the dust scattering can be reduced by 75%, indicating important role of windbreak wall height on particle scattering. The numerical results would be useful in decision of the appropriate height of windbreak wall for decreasing the amount of scattering dust under various environmental conditions.

압력 평형식 온도조절 밸브 내부 유동 특성에 대한 수치적 연구 (A Numerical Study on the Flow Characteristics of Temperature Control Valve by Pressure Compensation)

  • Temperature Control Valve (TCV) is one of the useful temperature control devices, which is used to control constant temperature of working fluid in power and chemical plants and domestic water supply systems. TCV is composed of body, cylinder and piston, and the body shape has a symmetrical H-type. In general, it has several inlet and outlet holes, and its shape is like as tubular sleeve. The piston has three rings two rings of the end of piston have the function of controlling inlet flow rate with hot and cold working fluids, the center ring has the function of preventing hot and cold water from intermixing. Consequently, the shapes of piston and cylinder are the main design parameters in the performance of TCV. In this study, numerical analyses were carried out with two different piston and cylinder shapes to investigate the functions as a temperature control valve and the flow characteristics according to piston opening grade in TCV. Using a commercial code, FLUENT, velocity and pressure fields in TCV are obtained under steady, standard $k -{\epsilon}$ turbulence model and no-slip condition.

  • In this investigation, the aerodynamic performance evaluation of a 1MW class blade has been performed with the purpose of the verification of target output and its clear understanding of flow field using CFD commercial code, ANSYS FLUENT. Before making progress of CFD analysis the HERACLES V2.0 software based on blade element momentum theory was applied for confirmation of quick and approximate performance in the preliminary stage. The blade was designed to produce the target output of a 1MW class at a rated wind speed of 12m/s, which consists of five different airfoils such as FFA W-301, DU91-W250, DU93-W-210, NACA 63418 and NACA 63415 from hub to tip. The mechanical power by CFD is approximately 1.195MW, which is converted into the electrical power of 1.075MW if the system loss is considered to be 0.877.

  • Hydraulic servo valves are widely used in various fluid power systems because of their fast response and precision control. In this paper, we studied the effect of metering notch shapes and amount of their openings on the flow characteristics within the spool valve using a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) code, FLUENT. To obtain the results for more realistic operating conditions, viscous heating due to the jet flow and viscosity variation of the hydraulic fluid with temperature were considered. For two types of notch shape, streamlines, oil temperature and viscosity distributions, and variations of flow and friction forces acting on spool were showed. The flow and friction forces affected by the metering notch shapes and their openings, and oil temperature rise near metering notch was significant enough to results in the jamming phenomenon. A thermohydrodynamic (THD) flow analysis adopted in this paper can be used in optimum design of hydraulic servo valves.

자동차 워터펌프 밸런스 홀 직경이 수력성능 및 축추력에 미치는 영향 (Effects of the Balance Hole Diameter of an Automotive Closed Type Water Pump on Hydraulic Performance and Axial Force)

  • The aim of this paper was to investigate the fluid dynamic behavior of the automotive closed type water pump with balance hole in order to evaluate and justify its overall hydraulic performance and, in particular to analyze the effects of the balance hole on the reduction of hydraulic flow force of it. The analysis has been peformed by applying the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, Fluent, to the solution of the 3-D turbulent flow fields of automotive closed type water pump. The reliability of the employed analysis was demonstrated by the comparison between numerical result and experimental data. Although, hydraulic head of the closed type water pump with 3mm diameter of balance hole decreased by 1.1%, axial flow force was effectively reduced by 13.3%, comparison of it with no hole at design point.

  • Computations were performed to investigate the flow, temperature and pollutants in two stage heavy-oil combustion burner. The burner geometry and flow conditions were provided by a burner company. The goal of the study is to understand combustion phenomena according to each air inlet's velocity, excessive air ratio and air temperature through CFD. Air flow rates at two inlets are adjusted by a damper inside a burner. Here, injection conditions of liquid fuel are kept constant throughout all simulations. This assumption is made in order to limit the complexity of oil combustion though it may cause some disagreement. The final goal of this research is to design a Low-NOx heavy oil combustion burner through comparison between computational study and experimental ones. Besides experiments, simulation works can give us insights into heavy oil combustion and help us design a Low NOx burner while saving time and cost. The computational study is based on k-e model, P-1 radiation model(WSGGM) and PDF, and is implemented on a commercial code, FLUENT.

타원체 딤플로 Texturing한 평행 스러스트 베어링의 윤활특성 (Lubrication Characteristics of Surface Textured Parallel Thrust Bearing with Ellipsoidal Dimples)

  • Friction reduction between machine components is important for improving their efficiency and lifespan. In recent years, surface texturing has received considerable attention as a viable means to enhance the efficiency and tribological performance of highly sliding mechanical components such as parallel thrust bearings, mechanical face seals, and piston rings. In this study, we perform lubrication analysis to investigate the effect of dimple shapes and orientations on the lubrication characteristics of a surface textured parallel thrust bearing. Numerical analysis involves solving the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, FLUENT. We use dimples consisting of hemispherical and different semiellipsoidal orientations for simulation. We compare pressure and streamline distributions, load capacity, friction force, and leakage flowrate for different numbers of dimples and orientations. We find that the dimple shapes, orientations, and their numbers starting from an inlet influence the lubrication characteristics. The results show that partial texturing of the bearing inlet region, and the ellipsoidal dimples with the major axis aligned along the lubricant flow direction exhibit the best lubrication characteristics in terms of higher load capacity and lower friction. The results can be used in the design of optimum dimple characteristics for parallel thrust bearings, for which further research is required.

사용후핵연료 저장용기의 정상 및 비정상조건에 대한 열해석 (Thermal Analysis of a Spent Fuel Storage Cask under Normal and Off-Normal Conditions)

  • This study presents the thermal analyses of a spent fuel dry storage cask under normal and off-normal conditions. The environmental temperature is assumed to be 15 $^{\circ}C$ under the normal condition. The off-normal condition has an environmental temperature of 38 $^{\circ}C$. An additional off-normal condition is considered as a partial blockage of the air inlet ducts. Two of the four air inlet ducts are assumed to be completely blocked. The significant thermal design feature of the storage cask is the air flow path used to remove the decay heat from the spent fuel. Natural circulation of the air inside the cask allows the concrete and fuel cladding temperatures to be maintained below the allowable values. The finite volume computational fluid dynamics code FLUENT was used for the thermal analysis. The maximum temperatures of the fuel rod and concrete overpack were lower than the allowable values under the normal and off-normal conditions.
