  • Effect of fluctuation imposed on the inflow to LOX manifold of liquid rocket has been analyzed numerically. Time-varying fluctuation was idealized by the sinusoidal signal and three different representative frequencies were considered. It was found that all the frequencies tested produced the consistent flow reactions in the manifold in that the place close to the region of infection showed oscillatory flow rate through injector orifices in phase with the inflow fluctuation whereas the other side exhibits characteristics which are out of phase.

  • Many small scale Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) are currently being constructed at many rural areas. The STPs in rural area suffer from low concentration and large inflow quantity fluctuation during wet weather mainly due to illicit combined sewer system. Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) is a process effectively coping with these obstacles. The main objective of this study was to evaluate SBR with high hydraulic loading and low inflow concentration. The operating conditions tested were: organic loading rate = $0.17-0.42KgBOD/m^3/d$, hydraulic loadings = $12.1-61.5m^3/m^2/d$, average MLSS concentration = 2500 mg/L, F/M ratio = 0.026-0.17 KgBOD/Kg MLSS, HRT = 9-12 hr HRT, and SRT = 5.6-33.6 days. Organic loading rate on SBR did not impact significantly on BOD and SS removal efficiencies. To increase treatment efficiencies, low hydraulic loading rate with low concentration was required. The results suggested that low influent concentration with high inflow rates during wet weather requires extended time for settling.

  • The effect of buildings on flow in urban canopy is one of the most important problems in local/micro-scale meteorology. A large eddy simulation model is used to simulate the flow structure in an urban neighborhood and the bulk effect of the buildings on surrounding flows is analyzed. The results demonstrate that: (a) The inflow conditions affect the detailed flow characteristics much in the building group, including: the distortion or disappearance of the wake vortexes, the change of funneling effect area and the change of location, size of the static-wind area. (b) The bulk effect of the buildings leads to a loss of wind speed in the low layer where height is less than four times of the average building height, and this loss effect changes little when the inflow direction changes. (c) In the bulk effect to environmental fields, the change of inflow direction affects the vertical distribution of turbulence greatly. The peak value of the turbulence energy appears at the height of the average building height. The attribution of fluctuations of different components to turbulence changes greatly at different height levels, in the low levels the horizontal speed fluctuation attribute mostly, while the vertical speed fluctuation does in high levels.

  • This study analyzed the characteristics of sewer flow and its water quality, and investigated changes in the characteristics in three areas where the sewer rehabilitation projects have been carried out. In S1 area, the patterns of the flow became regular and the range of the fluctuation decreased after the sewer rehabilitation. The flow and its BOD concentration increased. The infiltration/inflow and exfiltration showed clear distinction before and after the sewer rehabilitation in this area. In S2 area, the patterns and the range of the fluctuation of the flow made no differences before and after the sewer rehabilitation. The flow decreased slightly and its BOD concentration increased considerably after the sewer rehabilitation. Big decrement in stormwater inflow but small in exfiltration appeared in this area. In S3 area, the patterns and the range of the fluctuation of the flow made no differences before and after the sewer rehabilitation. The flow decreased slightly and its BOD concentration increased in a small rate in this area.

  • In this study, we evaluated the uncertainty in the process of selecting GCM and downscaling method for assessing the impact of climate change, and influence of user-centered climate change information on reproducibility of Chungju Dam inflow was analyzed. First, we selected the top 16 GCMs through the evaluation of spatio-temporal reproducibility of 29 raw GCMs using 30-year average of 10-day precipitation without any bias-correction. The climate extreme indices including annual total precipitation and annual maximum 1-day precipitation were selected as the relevant indices to the dam inflow. The Simple Quantile Mapping (SQM) downscaling method was selected through the evaluation of reproducibility of selected indices and spatial correlation among weather stations. SWAT simulation results for the past 30 years period by considering limitations in weather input showed the satisfactory results with monthly model efficiency of 0.92. The error in average dam inflow according to selection of GCMs and downscaling method showed the bests result when 16 GCMs selected raw GCM analysi were used. It was found that selection of downscaling method rather than selection of GCM is more is important in overall uncertainties. The average inflow for the future period increased in all RCP scenarios as time goes on from near-future to far-future periods. Also, it was predicted that the inflow volume will be higher in the RCP 8.5 scenario than in the RCP 4.5 scenario in all future periods. Maximum daily inflow, which is important for flood control, showed a high changing rate more than twice as much as the average inflow amount. It is also important to understand the seasonal fluctuation of the inflow for the dam management purpose. Both average inflow and maximum inflow showed a tendency to increase mainly in July and August during near-future period while average and maximum inflows increased through the whole period of months in both mid-future and far-future periods.

  • The fluctuation of inlet flow to a water treatment plant makes a serious problem that it can change the outlet flow-rate from each process abruptly, and ultimately occur the detachment of the attached particles inside each unit process. Also, since it takes very short time for the surface wave occurred from the fluctuation of inlet flow to reach the latter processes, it is impossible for operators to cope with that stably. Therefore this study was conducted to suggest the methodology for accurately predicting the travel time of surface wave occurred from the fluctuation of inlet flow to reach the latter process. Through the experiment, which was carried out for the full-scale water treatment plants(capacity : 2,000m3/d), it could be confirmed that the flow rate fluctuation from equalization tank produce the surface wave. And the wave transfer velocity is a function of the hydraulic radius and the length of each open type tanks which are comprised in the latter processes.

  • The instability curve of a Rijke tube system was obtained accurately by following different paths of heat power and flow-rate for three regions and by defining its locus from the criterion based on the measured sound pressure levels. The unstable limits in the region of flow-rate lower than that at the minimal power are compared with previous data. To observe the effect of turbulence on the unstable limits, inflow turbulence was introduced by placing a bundle of circular cylinders upstream of the heating part ($50). The large-amplitude inflow fluctuation may delay the transition of the chamber acoustic mode to the unstable Bone even at a sufficient power.

  • Recently, there is a tendency to design the large full ships with lower-powered engine as the means for energy saving in ship's navigation at seas. Such a lower-powered ship is anticipated to show the different propulsive performance in rough seas, because the fluctuation of main engine load of lower powered ship is relatively large as compared with higher-powered ship is relatively large as compared with higher-powered ship. The fluctuation of propeller load is nonlinear at racing condition in waves. It is due to the variation of inflow velocity into propeller, the propeller immersion and the characteristics of engine governor. In this paper, the theoretical calculation of the nominal speed loss and the numerical simulation for the nonlinear load fluctuation of a model ship in rough seas are carried out. From the results of calculation, the following are discussed. (1) The ratio of nominal speed loss to the speed in still water. (2) The manoeuvring ability of ship and the operational ability of main engine in a seaway. (3) A method of the evaluation for the fluctuation of propeller torque and revolution on the engine characteristics plane. (4) The effect of engine governor characteristics on the propeller load fluctuation.

  • Wall pressure measurements and flow visualization were conducted for a 90 degree elbow with an axis curvature radius the same as its inner diameter (125 mm). Reynolds numbers 320,000 and 500,000, based on the inner diameter and bulk velocity, were examined. A deflected inflow, having an almost constant velocity slope and a faster velocity at the inside, was introduced. Ensemble averaged pressure distributions showed that no difference of normalized pressure could be found in both the Reynolds number cases. Power spectral density functions of pressures exhibited that the fluctuation having the Strouhal number (based on the inner diameter and bulk velocity) of 0.6 existed in the downstream region of the elbow, which was 0.1 larger than that of the uniform inflow case [1]. Results of numerical calculations qualitatively coincided with the experimental ones.

  • In the north and northeast of Cheonsu Bay, short-term fluctuations of surface water temperature are large owing to shallow water depth, weak current, and freshwater runoff. However, in the south of the bay, water temperature fluctuations are small owing to the inflow of offshore water by tidal currents. The water temperature in the north of the bay is higher in spring and summer than in the south of the bay, but lower in autumn and winter. During spring season, the fluctuation in the northern surface water temperature is the highest. The temperature fluctuations owing to tides are in phase with the tide in autumn and winter, and in the reverse phase with the tide in spring and summer. The dominant periods of water temperature fluctuations are half a day, daily, 15 days, and 1 month owing to the tide and 7 to 10 days, which are estimated based on atmospheric factors. Half a day and daily water temperature fluctuations are also highly correlated with air temperature and wind fluctuations. The sea area where water temperature fluctuations are highly correlated is divided into the north and south of the bay. The fluctuation phase is faster in the north of the bay than in the south or in the center.
