The New bicolor spray rose (Rose hybrida Hort.) cultivar was developed by line selection in 2000 at the Flower Breeding Research Institute, Gyeongnam ARES. Characteristics were investigated three times from 2003 to 2006. 'Yellow King' was crossed between 'Spring Time' and 'Flair' and it has a Yellow Orange-group color (RHS No. 16A), few thorns and spray flower with a good harmony between ray floret and flower center. The vase life of cut flower was 9.1days. It was registered as commercial cultivar in 2006. This new cultivar could be planted in most of greenhouse production region of Korea and will be released to general rose growers in 2007.

Flower industry is now growing due to the development of economy in many countries. Simultaneously, needs from consumers in flower market are varied widely. To satisfy the needs from consumers and deal with a variety of diseases from a lots of pathogens as well as climate change, new elite flower cultivars should be released in flower market. For this purpose, conventional and biotechnological techniques can be employed to make good cultivar. Therefore, this review describes the general overview of flower breeding techniques including cross-hybridization, mutation breeding and genetic transformation systems. Also, breeding systems for ornamentals derived from plant tissue culture such as embryo culture, in vitro fertilization, ovary/ovule culture and haploid production were reviewed. Furthermore, in this study recent development of the generation of new flower cultivars using marker-assisted breeding, plant transformation including particle bombardment and Agrobacterium tumefaciens as well as genome-editing technology were described. This review will be contributed to the development and releasement of new flower cultivars with horticulturally useful traits in the future.

경남농업기술원 화훼육종연구소에서 2000년부터 교배조합 육성을 위하여 국내의 재배농가와 종묘업체로부터 유전자원을 수집한 후, 2000년부터 2007년에 걸쳐 교배 및 계통선발육종을 하였다. 2004년부터 2006년까지 3회의 특성검정을 거쳐서 호접란 신품종 '리틀 듀'를 개발하였다. '리틀 듀'는 백색 미니 다화성계 품종으로 꽃잎, 꽃받침, 설판이 모두 백색이며 꽃 크기는 3~4cm 정도이다. 특히 화경이 3~4개 정도가 발생하여 많은 꽃이 피고 꽃배열도 우수하여 관상가치가 높아 시장성이 우수하다고 판단되었다. 또한 조직배양을 통해 영양번식도 용이한 것으로 나타났고 재배가 용이하고 생육속도도 매우 빠른 것으로 나타났다. 꽃수명도 긴 편이며 병충해 발생도 적고 저온처리를 통한 개화조절도 용이하여 상업용 재배에 적합한 품종으로 판단되었다.

A new spray chrysanthemum cultivar, 'Moon Festival' was released by National Horticultural Research Institute (NHRI), Rural Development Administration (RDA), Korea in 2007. A cross was made in 2002 between '01B1-559', a breeding line of NHRI and 'Baeksokuk', a spray cultivar with white petals. Trials were conducted from 2005 to 2007 for evaluation and selection of this cultivar, including shading culture in summer and retarding culture in autumn. The natural flowering time of "Moon Festival" is late October, but year-round flowering is possible by shading and lighting treatment. The cultivar is semi- double type flowers with light-ivory white petals and green flower center. Flower neck and stem are very hardy. The diameter of flower is 67.5 mm. The number of flowers per stem and petals per flower is 11.5 and 100.5, respectively. The days to flowering under the short day is about 54 in autumn season.

A new spray chrysanthemum cultivar 'Pure Angel' was released by National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science (NIHHS), Rural Development Administration (RDA), Korea in 2007. The cross was made in 2004 between 'Innocence', a breeding cultivar of NIHHS, and 'Baeksokuk', a spray cultivar with white petals. Trials were conducted from 2005 to 2007 for the evaluation and selection of this cultivar, including shade cultures in summer and retarding cultures in autumn. The natural flowering time of 'Pure Angel' is late October, but year-round flowering is possible by photo-periodic control. The cultivar has single type flowers with pure white petals and a green flower center. It shows long vase life and resistance to white rust. The diameter of flower is 52.5 mm. The numbers of flowers per stem and petals per flower are 12 and 22.5, respectively. Days to flowering under the short day treatment is about 52 days in spring seasons.

절화장미 '해도지' 품종은 전라남도농업기술원에서 육성한 적색 스탠다드 신품종으로 절화수명이 우수한 'Vital'을 모본으로, 화색이 선명한 적색 'Cardinal'를 부본으로 하여 2003년에 인공교배 하였다. 화형과 화색이 예쁘고 꽃잎수가 적합한 2계통을 2004년 1차 선발 하였다. 2005년부터 2007년까지 특성 및 생산력검정을 실시하여 적색이며 묘 양성이 쉽고 줄기가 곧으며 비교적 흰가루병에 강한 특성을 가지고 있으며 수량성도 우수한 '해도지' 품종을 육성하였다. 육성된 품종은 스탠다드 중형계 품종으로 꽃크기가 9.2 cm, 절화장이 62 cm, 절화수명이 9.5일로 줄기가 곧고 흰가루병에 강하고 절화수명이 우수하며 절화수량은 3년 동안의 검정결과 167본/$m^2$/년으로 대비품종 '티아모' (164본/$m^2$/년)에 비해 2% 증가하였다.

경남농업기술원 화훼육종연구소에서 '98년부터 교배조합육성을 위하여 국내의 재배농가와 종묘업체로부터 품종을 수집한 후, '01년 3월에 핑크색 대륜계의 'Grandeur'를 모본, 백색 소륜계의 'Nova Zembla'를 부본으로 인공교배를 실시하여 교배조합으로부터 284개의 종자를 획득하였다. 교배 후 결실이 된 조합은 채종 즉시 파종하였으며, 파종 1개월 후 248개의 유묘를 획득하였으며, 발아된 유묘는 본엽이 4~5매 전개되었을 때 화훼육종연구소 유리온실내의 선발 포장에 정식하였다. 그 후 교잡 1세대를 육묘하여 화색이 선명하고 수량이 많은 우수 2개체(01128-65, 94)를 1차로 선발하였다. 그 후 특성이 우수한 01128-94(경남 G-22)개체를 생장점배양에 의해 개체증식 후 화훼육종연구소 유리온실내의 특성검정 포장에 정식하여 2003년 6월부터 2004년 10월까지 3회에 걸쳐 생육 및 수량특성 검정을 실시하였다. 특성검정을 실시한 결과 화색, 화형, 수확량 등 품질과 수량이 우수하다고 판단되어 2005년 농작물 직무육성 신품종선정위원회의 심의를 거쳐 'Summer Ring'로 명명하였다. 'Summer Ring'은 화색이 선명한 핑크색의 반겹꽃 절화용으로 수량이 많고 안정된 소륜화로서 화색과 화심색이 잘 조화된 기호도가 높은 품종이다. 본당 수량은 연간 3회 검정 결과 평균 68.9개이며, 평균절화수명은 14.7일이다.

It was selected from the progenies of open-pollination of 'Torbay' in 2002. Trials were conducted from 2005 to 2007 for evaluation and selection of this cultivar, including shading culture in summer and retarding culture in autumn. The natural flowering time of 'Golden Festival' is late October, but year-round flowering is possible by shading and lighting treatment. The cultivar is semi-double type flowers with bright yellow petals and green flower center. Flower neck and stem are very hardy. The diameter of flower is 56.5 mm. The number of flowers per stem and petals per flower are 12.0 and 93.5, respectively. The days to flowering under the short day treatment is about 50 in spring season.

국내 재배환경에 적합한 다수성인 거베라 소륜계통의 우수 신품종 육성을 위하여 경남농업기술원 화훼육종연구소에서 1999년부터 교배조합 육성을 위하여 국내의 재배농가와 종묘업체로부터 품종을 수집한 후, 2001년 3월에 핑크색 대륜계의 'Grandeur'를 모본, 오렌지색 중 대륜계의 'Songsongee'를 부본으로 인공교배를 실시하여 교배조합으로부터 436개의 종자를 획득하였다. 교배 후 결실이 된 조합은 채종 즉시 파종하였으며, 파종 1개월 후 발아된 378개의 유묘는 본엽이 4~5매 전개되었을 때 화훼육종연구소 유리온실 내의 선발 포장에 정식하였다. 그 후 교잡 1세대를 육묘하여 화색이 선명하고 수량이 많은 우수 5개체(01129-028, 105, 188, 325, 335)를 1차로 선발하였다. 그 후 특성이 우수한 01129-335(경남 G-24)개체를 생장점배양에 의해 개체증식 후 화훼육종연구소 유리온실내의 특성검정 포장에 정식하여 2003년 6월부터 2004년 10월까지 3회에 걸쳐 생육 및 수량특성 검정을 실시하였다. 특성검정을 실시한 결과 화색, 화형, 수확량 등 품질과 수량이 우수하다고 판단되어 2005년 농작물 직무육성 신품종선정위원회의 심의를 거쳐 'Sweety'로 명명하였다. 'Sweety'는 화색이 선명한 오렌지색의 반겹꽃 절화용으로 수량이 많고 안정된 중 소륜화로서 화색과 화심색이 잘 조화된 기호도가 높은 품종이다. 본당 수량은 연간 3회 검정 결과 평균 51.2개이며, 평균 절화수명은 10.4일이다.

A new gerbera variety "Pink Swan" was released by the National Horticultural Research Institute (NHRI) in 2007. A cross was made between "Royal" with orange and single and 'Himalaya' with white and semi-double in 2004. After investigation of the characteristics for 4 years (from 2004 to 2007), it was selected specially for the use of cut-flower. "Pink Swan" is a vigorous medium-sized cultivar with pink (RHS R48D), yellow green center and semi-double. The average flower diameter is 10.6 cm. And inner ray floret and disc diameter is 5.99cm and 1.83cm, respectively. It produces a large yield with continuous supply of flowers and has adequate peduncle height. We believe that "Pink Swan" has a great potential for expanding cultivated area of domestic gerbera cultivar and increasing farmers-income.
