시뮬레이션 프로그램을 이용한 특수유형 회전교차로의 운영 효율성 분석 (Simulated Operational Efficiency Analysis of Special Roundabouts)

  • PURPOSES : The goal of this study is to analyze the operational efficiencies of special roundabouts using simulated programs. METHODS : This study primarily focuses on comparing the delays and traffic flow disturbances occurring at special roundabouts. In this study, the operational efficiencies of 450 scenarios (5 roundabout types ${\times}$ traffic volumes ${\times}$ directional ratios ${\times}$ measures) are analyzed according to the corresponding delays and traffic flow disturbances using VISSIM and SSAM. RESULTS : The main results are as follows: 1) the Hamburger roundabouts are determined to yield the least common-type delays, 2) the amount of delays at Turbo and Flower roundabouts with respect to relatively increased right-turn-type delays, in addition to the amount of delays at the Left-turn slip-lane roundabout with respect to relatively increased left-turn-type delays, are found to be reduced as compared to the common-type delays. Lastly, common- and increased right-turn-type traffic flow disturbances at the Turbo roundabout and increased left-turn-type traffic flow disturbances at the Left-turn slip-lane roundabout are determined to be the most infrequent. CONCLUSIONS : This study comparatively analyzes five roundabout types: standard, Flower, Turbo, Hamburger, and Left-turn slip-lane. The effectiveness of roundabouts can increase according to given traffic volume, directional ratio, and measure of effectiveness.

회전교차로 형태별 운영 및 안전성 평가에 관한 연구 (An Operation and Safety Assessment Study of Roundabout Types)

  • PURPOSES: The aim of this study is to analyze and compare the operational effectiveness and safety of three different types of roundabout found in the literatures using a VISSIM and SSAM program. METHODS : The three types roundabout tested are the 2-lane roundabout (2R), the Turbo roundabout (TR), and the Flower roundabout (FR). For each scenario, three roundabout types and traffic conditions such as traffic volume and movement ratio were applied to VISSIM in order to compute the average delays. In addition the total conflict was calculated through SSAM by using trajectory data from VISSIM. RESULTS: From the analysis results, the average delay in TR and FR type was higher than the 2R. Regardless of the roundabout types, the average delay was reduced as the right-turn vehicles increased. The total conflict in TR was fewer than 2R for all traffic conditions. CONCLUSIONS : The results of this study can be used in the planning and design process of roundabout deployment. The data also provides some numerical justifications in transition from at-grade intersection to roundabout.

특수유형 회전교차로 신호미터링 적용 및 평가 (Application and Evaluation of Signal Metering at Special Roundabouts)

  • 회전교차로는 불필요한 정체를 줄이고 교통사고를 감소시키기 위하여 적극적으로 설치되고 있다. 하지만 차로당 교통량이 450대 이상인 경우 도입이 어렵고 교통여건에 따라 특정방향에 지체가 집중될 수 있는 단점이 존재한다. 이러한 단점을 보완하기 위해 회전교차로에 신호미터링을 도입하였다. 신호미터링은 특정방향에 지체가 발생한 경우 인접한 진입 교통류에 적색신호를 부여하여 지체가 발생한 방향의 회전교차로 진입을 원활히하는 기법이다. 본 연구에서는 기존 일반 회전교차로와 특수유형 회전교차로인 Turbo형 회전교차로와 Flower형 회전교차로를 대상으로 신호미터링을 도입하여 회전교차로 유형별 신호미터링 도입 효과를 비교 분석하였다. 분석에는 VISSIM API를 이용하였으며, 분석결과 기존 회전교차로의 경우에만 신호미터링 알고리즘 도입 시 지체감소 효과를 보였다. Turbo형, Flower형 회전교차로의 경우 지체가 증가하는 것으로 나타나 기존 회전교차로의 경우에 신호미터링 알고리즘 도입 시 효율적인 교차로 운영이 가능한 것으로 분석되었다.
