Flow traveling over a cavity opening forms a vortex due to unstable shear layer and induces an aerodynamic pressure excitation from the diffusion of the vortex convecting out of the trailing edge of the opening. The interaction between the excitation force and the cavity response sustains resonance in the resonator(cavity) and locked-in vortex shedding at the leading edge of the opening. The aerodynamic excitation force can be described from the diffusion of the vortex over the trailing edge and the level of its diffusivity is related to the strength of vorticity seeded at the leading edge. In this study, the control scheme of the internal pressure oscillation was proposed from regulating the vorticity at the leading edge by use of an oscillating spoiler. It was found that the relative motion between the spoiler and the air mass at the cavity opening influenced vorticity strength and the control was achieved by direct feedback of the cavity pressure fluctuation to the actuator.

The aerodynamic excitation force can be described from the diffusion of the vortex over the trailing edge and the level of its diffusivity is related to the strength of vorticity seeded at the loading edge.
The tone generation mechanism and aeroacoustic characteristics have been investigated for flow over open cavities using direct acoustic numerical simulations. Physically the tone generation mechanism of open cavity is more complicated when flow instabilities are excited by the correlation effects of flow parameters. From non-dimensional parameter studies in very low Mach number range, it is shown that characteristics of cavity resonance inherently involve typical acoustic pattern at each discrete tone frequency, and especially in laminar flow the fundamental tone frequency is determined within flow instability criterion of laminar shear layer as well as cavity geometry, length to depth ratio.
In the present study a numerical simulation is performed on a natural convection inside a square cavity with a vibrating wall. The study has been conducted varying the heat transfer rate, wall excitation frequency and also the orientation of the cavity. The temperature and velocities inside the cavity was observed and also, the heat transfer coefficients on the heating wall was seen. From the results, it can be seen that the temperature inside the cavity decreases when excited with the proper frequency and the heat transfer coefficient increased with cavity inclination angle, ${\theta}$. It is also found from the results that flow resonance is occurred near the inclination angle ${\theta}=90^{\circ}$.

When a moist air is rapidly expanded in a supersonic nozzle, nonequilibrium condensation occurs at a supersaturation state. Condensation shock wave appears in the nozzle flow if the releasing latent heat due to condensation goes beyond a critical value. It has been known that self-excited oscillations of the condensation shock wave generate in an air or a steam nozzle flow with a large humidity. In the present study, the passive control technique using porous wall with a cavity underneath was applied to the condensation shock wave. The effects of the passive control on the steady and self-excited condensation shock waves were experimentally investigated by Schlieren visualization and static pressure measurements. The result shows that the present passive control is a useful technique to suppress the self-excited oscillations of condensation shock wave.

Experimental study is conducted to investigate the heat/mass transfer and flow characteristics for the flow over backward-facing step and cavities. A naphthalene sublimation method has been employed to measure the mass transfer coefficients on the duct wall and LDV system has been used to obtain mean velocity profiles and turbulence intensities. Reynolds number based on the step height and free stream velocity is 20,000 and St numbers of acoustic excitations given to separated flow are 0.2 to 0.4. The spectra of streamwise velocity fluctuation show a sharp peak forcing frequency for an acoustically excited flow. The results reveal that the vortex pairing and overall turbulence level are enhanced by the acoustic excitation and a significant decrease in the reattachment length and the increased turbulence intensity are observed with the excitation. A certain acoustic excitation increases considerably the heat/mass transfer coefficient at the reattachment point and in the recirculation region. For the cavities, heat/mass transfer is enhanced by the acoustic excitation due to the elevated turbulence intensity. For the 10H cavity, the flow pattern is significantly changed with the acoustic excitation. However, for the 5H cavity, the acoustic excitation has little effect on the flow pattern in the cavity.
Flow-excited acoustic resonance in ducted cavities can produce high levels of acoustic pressure that may lead to severe damage. This occurs when the flow instability over the cavity mouth, which is created by the free shear layer separation at the upstream edge, is coupled with one of the acoustic modes in the accommodating enclosure. Acoustic resonance can cause high amplitude fluctuating acoustic loads in and near the cavity. Such acoustic loads could cause damage in sensitive applications such as aircraft weapon bays. Therefore, the suppression and mitigation of these resonances are very important. Much of the work done in the past focused on the fluid-dynamic oscillation mechanism or suppressing the resonance by altering the edge condition at the shear layer separation. However, the effect of the downstream edge has received much less attention. This paper considers the effect of the impingement edge geometry on the acoustic resonance excitation and Strouhal number values of the flow instabilities in a ducted shallow cavity with an aspect ratio of 1.0. Several edges, including chamfered edges with different angles and round edges with different radii, were investigated. In addition, some downstream edges that have never been studied before, such as saw-tooth edges, spanwise cylinders, higher and lower steps, and straight and delta spoilers, are investigated. The experiments are conducted in an open-loop wind tunnel that can generate flows with a Mach number up to 0.45. The study shows that when some edge geometries, such as lower steps, chamfered, round, and saw-tooth edges, are installed downstream, they demonstrate a promising reduction in the acoustic resonance. On the other hand, higher steps and straight spoilers resulted in intensifying the acoustic resonance. In addition, the effect of edge geometry on the Strouhal number is presented.

The motions of a spinning rotor and a fluid enclosed in its cavity are known to have mutual interactions, which change the frequencies of forced vibrations and cause instabilities. These phenomena are of technical importance for fluid-cooled turbines as well as spin-stabilized satellites or rockets containing liquid fuels. In this paper the characteristics of unstable whirling of a rotor containing a partitioned cavity filled with two kinds of liquids are investigated experimentally. It studies the influence of rotational speed and filling ratio of two kinds of liquids on unstable whiring. As a result, it is found that the whirl velocity is approximately equal to, or slightly lower for large masses of trapped fluid than rotor critical speed. In case of a spinning rotor partially filled with two kinds of liquids the boundary surface plays a similar role to the free surface, and cases unstable forward whirl.

An experimental investigation has been conducted with the objective of studying the mixing mechanism near the nozzle exit in a tone-excited jet diffusion flame. The fuel jet was pulsed by means of a loudspeaker-driven cavity. The excitation frequencies were chosen for the two cases of the non-resonant and resonant frequency identified as a fuel tube resonance due to acoustic excitation. The effect of tone-excitations on mixing pattern near the nozzle exit and flame was visualized using various techniques, including schlieren photograph and laser light scattering photograph from $TiO_2$ seed particles. In order to clarify the details of the flame feature observed by visualization methods, hotwire measurements have been made. Excitation at the resonant frequency makes strong mixing near the nozzle. In this case, the fuel jet flow in the vicinity of nozzle exit breaks up into disturbed fuel parcels. This phenomena affects greatly the combustion characteristics of the tone excited jet and presumably occurs by flow separation from the wall inside the fuel nozzle. As a result, in the resonant frequency the flame length reduces greatly.

The objective of this paper is to investigate the flow-induced vibration of a flexible hydrofoil in cavitating flows via combined experimental and numerical studies. The experiments are presented for the modified NACA66 hydrofoil made of POM Polyacetate in the closed-loop cavitation tunnel and the numerical investigations are performed using a hybrid coupled fluid structure interaction model. The results showed that with the decreasing of cavitation number, the vibration magnitude increases dramatically for the cloud cavitation and declines for the supercavitation. The cloud cavitation development strongly affects the vibration response, with the main frequency of the vibration being accordance with the cavity shedding frequency and other two frequencies corresponding to the bending and twisting frequencies.
