The snow cornice mass on the formation zone had triggered avalanches which led to the loss of human life and property. Snow cornice is formed due to flow separation on the leeward side. Effect of lee slope is more prominent in the formation of snow cornices as compared to the windward slope. The analysis of wind flow pattern has been carried out to evaluate the performance of a jet roof. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis of wind flow over a 2D hill model was carried out using RNG based k-∈ turbulence models available in ANSYS Fluent. Effect of varying leeward hill slope (1:2 to 1:6) on flow separation for the given windward slope was observed and a critical slope of 1:4 was found at which the separation zone ceased to exist. The modification of wind flow over a hill due to the installation of jet roof was simulated. It was observed that jet roof had significantly modified the wind flow pattern around hill ridgeline and ultimately snow cornice formation had mitigated. The results of the wind flow pattern were validated with the wind data collected at the experimental site, Banihal Top (Jammu and Kashmir, India). The wind flow simulation over the hill and mitigation of cornice formation by the jet roof has been explained in the present paper.
Flow patterns of fluid flow in dividing trbe were visualized, and the energy losses due to dividing were measured in laminar dividing flow of the viscoelastic fluid and its solution in tube junctions with dividing angles of $90^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, $65^{\circ}$ and $15^{\circ}$. Two separation zones were observed. swelling of the streamline to the main tube or to lateral tube was observed. The sizes of the separation zones depend on the Reynolds number, the dividing angle and the dividing flow rate. The energy loss coefficients decrease with increasing Reynolds number, but their decreasing rate decreases with increasing Reynolds number as the sizes of the separation zone increase. The effect of dividing angle on the energy loss coefficients and separation is greater for main tube than for the lateral tube.

The dividing flow in an open channel has a number of distinctive characteristics. One of these is that the separation zone interacts with a secondary motion along the inner wall of a branch channel, generating sediment accumulation. To investigate this phenomenon, a two-dimensional numerical model based on the shallow-water equations, RMA2, which calculates water surface elevations and horizontal-velocity components, was used to analyze the dividing flow. The obtained numerical results fully coincide with the laboratory measurements reported by Hsu et al.(2002). For the analysis of the numerical results, a separation zone-discharge rate relationship was proposed. To reduce the size of a separation zone, the topographies of diagonal and curved edges were proposed, smoothly connecting the upstream corner to branch channel.

We numerically simulated a dissolved air flotation (DAF) tank to predict the performance of the pilot facility. The flow was assumed to be two-dimensional and two-phase. The velocity distributions in the separation zones of differently shaped DAFs were compared to find the effect of the shape on the performance. The results showed that the typical flow pattern that appeared in a well-designed DAF-tank was generated in the separation zone of the base model. This flow pattern could be maintained while the baffle height was sufficiently tall regardless of the other geometric parameters. However, the baffle height and angle, the contact zone width, and the perforated plate affected the uniformity of the downward flow in the separation zone. Except for the baffle height, the base model used in this study showed a better uniformity of downward flow than did other models with different geometric parameters.
The diverse patterns of separation zone according to the marked bed discordance by dredging at confluence in addition to the confluence angle of tributary and discharge ratio between tributary and main channels have been analyzed by CCHE2D model simulation. The separation zone is defined by inside of zero velocity boundary at down-stream of confluence. The separation zone dose not formed at the $30^{\circ}$ of confluence angle of tributary. The size of separation zone increases as the discharge ratio and confluence angle increase in general. The separation zone decreases as the dredging depth increases which shows the relative momentum reduction compared by the flow volume increasing by dredging at confluence. The contraction factor with the variation of confluence angle and discharge ratio has been investigated and confirmed the corresponding conveyance decreasing results in backwater effect. The regression equation of shape factor with confluence angle and discharge and dredging depth ratios has been suggested.

Flow separation of recirculation zone by increasing of flow and change of its direction at confluence results in backwater due to conveyance reduction. The hydraulic characteristics of flow separation are analysed by experimental results of flow ratios of tributary and main streams and approaching angles. The boundary of flow separation by dimensionless length and width is defined by the streamline of zero and this definition agrees well to the existing investigation. Because flow separation doesn't appear in small flow ratio and approaching angle of $30^{\circ}$, the equation of flow separation with flow ratio and approaching angle is provided. In flow separation consideration and comparing with previous results, the existing equations of dimensionless length and width ratios by function of approaching angle, flow ratio, and downstream Froude number are modified and also contraction coefficient and shape factor are analysed. Dimensionless length and width ratios are proportional to the flow ratio and approaching angle. In analysis of water surface profiles, the backwater effects are proportional to the flow ratio and approaching angle and the magnitude at outside wall is greater than that of inside wall of main stream. The length, $X_l$ from the beginning of confluence to downstream of uniform flow, where the depth is equal to uniform depth, is characterized by width of stream, flow ratio, approaching angle, and contraction coefficient. The ratios between maximum water depth by backwater and minimum depth at separation are analysed.

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the local velocity acceleration in a boundary layer diffusion flame over a flat plate. In order to know the effect of separation on the local velocity acceleration, two typical cases, flows with and without separation, are considered. For these cases, flow visualization using paraffine smoke tracers has been made. Mean velocity and r.m.s. value of fluctuating velocity are measured by using a laser Doppler velocimeter. In addition, measurements of time-mean concentration and time-mean temperature have been made. Time-mean density profiles have been obtained from the data of concentration and temperature. The obtained results are summarized as follows : (1) In the case without separation, the local velocity acceleration is clearly observed near the visible flame zone for all flow conditions. On the while, in the case with serration, the local velocity acceleration is observed only at low free stream velocity and high fuel injection velocity. As increasing the free stream velocity or decreasing the fuel injection velocity, it is not distinctly observed in the mean velocity profile. (2) The r.m.s. value of fluctuating velocity is significantly decreased by combustion in the case with separation. But in the case without separation, the r.m.s. value is increased near the visible flame zone in comparison with cold flow. In both cases, the peak value of r.m.s. appeared just at the visible flame zone, where the mean velocity gradient is not too high.
Flow and scalar dispersion around Cheomseongdae are numerically investigated using a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model with the renormalization group (RNG) $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence closure scheme. Cheomseongdae is an ancient astronomical observatory in Gyeongju, Korea, and is chosen as a model obstacle because of its unique shape, that is, a cylinder-shaped architectural structure with its radius varying with height. An interesting feature found is a mid-height saddle point behind Cheomseongdae. Different obstacle shapes and corresponding flow convergences help to explain the presence of the saddle point. The predicted size of recirculation zone formed behind Cheomseongdae increases with increasing ambient wind speed and decreases with increasing ambient turbulence intensity. The relative roles of inertial and eddy forces in producing cavity flow zones around an obstacle are conceptually presented. An increase in inertial force promotes flow separation. Consequently, cavity flow zones around the obstacle expand and flow reattachment occurs farther downwind. An increase in eddy force weakens flow separation by mixing momentum there. This results in the contraction of cavity flow zones and flow reattachment occurs less far downwind. An increase in ambient wind speed lowers predicted scalar concentration. An increase in ambient turbulence intensity lowers predicted maximum scalar concentration and acts to distribute scalars evenly.
In this study, flow in a porous medium is analyzed using a computer-extended perturbation series solution. The flow is modelled as a creeping flow in a periodically constricted channel. The channel walls have a sinusoidally varying width and the flow is analyzed in terms of its vorticity and stream functions in the Stokes flow regime. The perturbation series in terms of a small parameter, average width to length ratio, is extended with a computer resulting in purely asymptotic series and Pade summation is used to obtain final results. Resulting flow shows flow separations in the widening section and immobile zones in the widest section of the flow regime with reattachment in the narrowing section. Analysis of the flow separation phenomena resulted in a correlation between the two geometric parameters of the channel walls to predict the onset of flow separation in the Stokes flow regime.

Discrete vortex method was applied for simulating an active control of turbulent leading- edge separation bubble. The leading-edge separation zone was perturbed by a time-dependent sinusoidal perturbation of different frequencies and levels. In order to describe the local sinusoidal perturbation at the separation point, a source pulsation vortex technique was proposed. The present two-dimensional vortex simulations were qualitatively compared with the experimental results for a blunt circular cylinder, where perturbation was introduced along the square-cut leading edge of the cylinder $(Kiya et al.^{(6,7)}).$ It was found that the reattachment length attained a minimum point at low levels of perturbation and two minima at a moderate higher perturbation frequency. The effects of local perturbation on the evolution of leading-edge separation bubble were scrutinized by comparing the perturbed flow with the natural flow. These comparisons were made for the distributions of mean velocity and its velocity fluctuations, intermittency and wall velocity. The motions of instantaneous reattachment in the space-time domain were demonstrated, which were also compared with the experimental findings. In order to investigate the reduction mehanism of reattachment length in the separation bubble, various cross-correlations for velocity and pressure and the relevant convection velocities were evaluated. It was observed that the convection velocity was closely associated with its corresponding pulsationg frequency.
