Self-excited noise generation from laminar flames in thin annular jets of methane/air premixture has been investigated experimentally. Various flames were observed in this flow configuration, including conical shape flames, ring shape flames, steady crown shape flames, and oscillating crown shape flames. Self-excited noise with the total sound pressure level of about 70dB was generated from the oscillating crown shape flames for the equivalence ratio larger than 0.95. Sound pressure and $CH^*$ chemiluminescence were measured by using a microphone and a photomultiplier tube. The frequency of generated noise was measured as functions of equivalence ratio and premixture velocity. A frequency doubling phenomena have also been observed. The flame shape during flame oscillation was reconfirmed by a synchronized PIV experiment. The velocity and pressure field were obtained from PIV. The minimum pressure was formed near the edge of flame representing circulation. By comparing the results of sound pressure, flame luminosity and PIV, the noise source can be attributed to the flame front fluctuation near the edge of the oscillating crown-shape flames.
This paper describes a simple method for evaluating the design wind loads for the structural frames of circular flat roofs with long spans. The dynamic response of several roof models were numerically analyzed in the time domain as well as in the frequency domain by using wind pressure data obtained from a wind tunnel experiment. The instantaneous displacement and bending moment of the roof were computed, and the maximum load effects were evaluated. The results indicate that the wind-induced oscillation of the roof is generally dominated by the first mode and the gust effect factor approach can be applied to the evaluation of the maximum load effects. That is, the design wind load can be represented by the time-averaged wind pressure multiplied by the gust effect factor for the first mode. Based on the experimental results for the first modal force, an empirical formula for the gust effect factor is provided as a function of the geometric and structural parameters of the roof and the turbulence intensity of the approach flow. The equivalent design pressure coefficients, which reproduce the maximum load effects, are also discussed. A simplified model of the pressure coefficient distribution is presented.
This paper studies the dynamics of the lineal-located time-harmonic moving-with-constant-velocity load which acts on the hydro-elastic system consisting of the elastic plate, compressible viscous fluid - strip and rigid wall. The plane-strain state in the plate is considered and its motion is described by employing the exact equations of elastodynamics but the plane-parallel flow of the fluid is described by the linearized Navier-Stokes equations. It is assumed that the velocity and force vectors of the constituents are continuous on the contact plane between the plate and fluid, and impermeability conditions on the rigid wall are satisfied. Numerical results on the velocity and stress distributions on the interface plane are presented and discussed and the focus is on the influence of the effect caused by the interaction between oscillation and moving of the external load. During these discussions, the corresponding earlier results by the authors are used which were obtained in the cases where, on the system under consideration, only the oscillating or moving load acts. In particular, it is established that the magnitude of the aforementioned interaction depends significantly on the vibration phase of the system.
The present study is to assess the applicability of the best-estimate thermal-hydraulic code, MARS 1.4, for the analysis of thermal-hydraulic behavior in PWRs during natural circulation conditions. The code simulates a natural circulation test, BETHSY test 4. la, which was conducted on the integral test facility of BETHSY. The test represented the cooling states of the primary cooling system under single-phase natural circulation, two-phase natural circulation and the reflux condensation mode with conditions corresponding to the residual power, 2% of the rated core power value and 6.8 MPa at the secondary system. Based on MARS 1.4 calculations, the major thermal-hydraulic behaviors during natural circulation are evaluated and the differences between the experimental data and calculated results are identified. The calculated results show generally good behavior with regard to the experimental results; the region of single-phase natural circulation is 100-92% of the initial mass inventory, two-phase natural circulation is 84-63 %, and the reflux condensation mode occurred below 58 %. U-tubes empty and the core uncovery are obtained at 39 % and 34 % of the initial mass inventory, respectively.
An edge tone is the discrete tone or narrow-band sound produced by an oscillating free shear layer impinging on a rigid surface. In this paper we present a two-dimensional edge tone to predict the frequency characteristics of the discrete oscillations of a jet-edge feedback cycle by the finite difference lattice Boltzmann method. We use a new lattice BGK compressible fluid model that has an additional term and allow larger time increment comparing a conventional FDLB model, and also use a boundary fitted coordinates. The jet is chosen long enough in order to guarantee the parabolic velocity profile of the jet at the outlet, and the edge consists of a wedge with an angle of ${\alpha}=23^{\circ}$ . At a stand-off distance ${\omega}$ , the edge is inserted along the centreline of the jet, and a sinuous instability wave with real frequency f is assumed to be created in the vicinity of the nozzle and to propagate towards the downstream. We have succeeded in capturing very small pressure fluctuations result from periodically oscillation of jet around the edge. That pressure fluctuations propagate with the sound speed. Its interaction with the wedge produces an irrotational feedback field which, near the nozzle exit, is a periodic transverse flow producing the singularities at the nozzle lips.

Given the rapid progress made in understanding the dynamics of an offshore floating body in an ocean environment, the present study aimed to simulate ocean waves in a small-sized wave flume and to observe the motion of a cylindrical floating body placed in an offshore environment. To generate regular ocean waves in a wave flume, we combined a wave generator and a wave absorber. In addition, to precisely visualise the oscillation of the body, a set of light-emitting diode illuminators and a high-speed charge-coupled device camera were installed in the flume. This study also focuses on the spectral analysis of the movement of the floating body. The wave generator and absorbers worked well to simulate stable regular waves. In addition, the simulated waves agreed well with the plane waves predicted by shallow-water theory. As the period of the oncoming waves changed, the movement of the floating body was substantially different when tethered to a tension-leg mooring cable. In particular, when connected to the tension-leg mooring cable, the natural frequency of the floating body appeared suddenly at 0.391 Hz as the wave period increased.

Offshore oscillating water columns (OWC) represent one of the most promising forms of wave energy converters. The hydrodynamic performance of such converters heavily depends on their interactions with ocean waves; therefore, understanding these interactions is essential. In this paper, a fully nonlinear 2D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model based on RANS equations and VOF surface capturing scheme is implemented to carry out wave energy balance analyses for an offshore OWC. The numerical model is well validated against published physical measurements including; chamber differential air pressure, chamber water level oscillation and vertical velocity, overall wave energy extraction efficiency, reflected and transmitted waves, velocity and vorticity fields (PIV measurements). Following the successful validation work, an extensive campaign of numerical tests is performed to quantify the relevance of three design parameters, namely incoming wavelength, wave height and turbine damping to the device hydrodynamic performance and wave energy conversion process. All of the three investigated parameters show important effects on the wave-pneumatic energy conversion chain. In addition, the flow field around the chamber's front wall indicates areas of energy losses by stronger vortices generation than the rear wall.

The reactive Eulerian-Lagrangian code is utilized to simulate combustion of ZPP/THPP in a closed vessel. In the paper, ignition delay of THPP is mainly studied since ZPP and THPP are isolated by a boron nitride wall. Only a numerical case study is conducted as experimental observation is inaccessible. Results showed THPP ignition delay affects initial shock strength thus not only the first peak become weak, but also the frequency of a pressure oscillation is slowed.
Flame stabilization characteristics of premixed flames in narrow annular coaxial tubes (NACT) were investigated experimentally. The NACT burner was proposed as a model of a cylindrical refractory burner, and it was made of quartz tubes. Flame stabilization conditions affected by the characteristic length of the burner was investigated with the variation of the equivalence ratio and the flow rates. Flame behaviors in narrow spaces could be directly observed. Conclusively, more wide flame stabilization conditions could be obtained at the case of the decreased channel scale. A flame instability, such as combustion noise was detected concerned with the flame oscillation observed at the surface of multi channel stage. Some flame propagation characteristics had complicated tendencies that may exist in practical porous-media combustors. Therefore, this NACT burner can be a basic configuration for the development of flame stabilization model in porous media combustor, and it will enhance our understanding about the behavior of flames in meso-scale combustion spaces.

Micro molding technology is a promising mass production technology for polymer based microstructures. Mass production technologies such as the micro injection/compression molding, hot embossing, and micro reaction molding are already in use. In the present study, we have developed a numerical analysis system to simulate three-dimensional non-isothermal cavity filling for hot embossing, with a special emphasis on the free surface capturing. Precise free surface capturing has been successfully accomplished with the level set method, which is solved by means of the Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin (RKDG) method. The RKDG method turns out to be excellent from the viewpoint of both numerical stability and accuracy of volume conservation. The Stokes equations are solved by the stabilized finite element method using the equal order tri-linear interpolation function. To prevent possible numerical oscillation in temperature Held we employ the streamline upwind Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) method. With the developed code we investigated the detailed change of free surface shape in time during the mold filling. In the filling simulation of a simple rectangular cavity with repeating protruded parts, we find out that filling patterns are significantly influenced by the geometric characteristics such as the thickness of base plate and the aspect ratio and pitch of repeating microstructures. The numerical analysis system enables us to understand the basic flow and material deformation taking place during the cavity filling stage in microstructure fabrications.
