Numerical Study on Flow and Heat Transfer Enhancement during Flow Boiling in Parallel Microchannels (병렬 미세관 흐름비등의 유동특성 및 열전달 향상에 대한 수치적 연구)

  • Flow boiling in parallel microchannels has received attention as an effective heat sink mechanism for power-densities encountered in microelectronic equipment. the bubble dynamics coupled with boiling heat transfer in microchannels is still not well understood due to the technological difficulties in obtaining detailed measurements of microscale two-phase flows. In this study, complete numerical simulation is performed to further clarify the dynamics of flow boiling in microchannels. The level set method for tracking the liquid-vapor interface is modified to include the effects of phase change and contact angle. The method is further extended to treat the no-slip and contact angle conditions on the immersed solid. Also, the reverse flow observed during flow boiling in parallel microchannels has been investigated. Based on the numerical results, the effects of channel shape and inlet area restriction on the bubble growth, reverse flow and heat transfer are quantified.

A Study of Artificial Reef Subsidence in Unsteady Flow Field (비정상 흐름장의 인공어초 침하특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The subsidence characteristics of artificial reef (AFR) in the unsteady flow such as tidal flow were investigated. The scour and subsidence characteristics were confirmed in the steady flow field. In a main study, the interaction of "Flow - Sediment Movement - Structure Behavior" and scou $r_sidence mechanism were discussed int he unsteady flow field. AFR subsidence characteristics was discussed with Reynolds number(Re*), Shields number(Sn*), dimensionless acceleration of flow (af/g) and dimensionless time (t/T). Most of all, the continuous AFR subsidence from the scour was occurred by periodic behavior of AFR. This behavior is result from the asymmetric ground, and is influenced by maximum velocity, duration time and direction of flow.ow.

  • In scramjet engines with sidewall compression inlet, it is well known that a non-uniform flow appears since a separated region is generated near the flow centerline on the body side. The separated region is caused by shock-boundary layer interaction and likely to cause un-start phenomena since the flow in the separated region is subsonic and acts as a communication path between the isolator and the combustor. In the present study, the non-uniform flow characteristics in the scramjet inlet-isolator region are numerically studied in detail. Effect of flow suction from body sidewall surface on the non-uniform flow field numerically examined to clarify the flow mechanism to suppress the un-start transition.

  • In metal cutting various types of chips are produced in consequence of cutting conditions. Flow-type chips have been studied in most cases because they are easier to be analyzed, but the actual surfaces of chips are not smooth, but crushed. This paper deals with saw-toothed chips, special types of flow-type chips, which have deep concaves and high convexes and sharp angles on the free surface. I tried to establish the theory of saw-toothed chip mechanism through experimental observation, that is, the mathmatical model of the cutting energy and cutting mechanism through the geometrical observation of the chips by using a microscope. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The mechanism of saw-toothed chips is diffenent from that of general flow-chips. 2. In the case of saw-toothed chips, the shear angle must be measured by the hypotenuse angle and the rake angle, and the shear angle is more affected by the rake angle than by the hypotenbuse angle. 3. The friction angle is represented by .beta. = . pi. /4+ .alpha./ sub n/- .phi. which is different from Merchant's equation. 4. The pitch and the slip are greatly influenced by depth of cut, but the influence of the rake angle on it is small. 5. The normal stress and the shear stress on the shear plane decrease with the increase of the cutting depth, and they are almost independent on the variation of a rake angle. 6. The unit friction energy on the tool face, the unit shear energy on the shear plane, and the total cutting energy per unit volume decrease with the increase of rake angle and cutting depth.

Effects of Cyclic Nucleotides on the Cerebral Blood Row Response Induced by Adenosine A2B Receptor Agonist in the Rats

  • This study was performed to investigate the regulatory mechanism of cerebral blood flow of adenosine $A_{2B}$ receptor agonist in the rats, and to define whether its mechanism is mediated by adenylate cyclase and guanylate cyclase. in pentobarbital-anesthetized, pentobrabital-paralyzed and artificially ventilated male Sprague-Dawley rats, all drugs were applied topically to the cerebral cortex. Blood How from cerebral cortex was measured using laser-Doppler flowmetry. Topical application of an adenosine $A_{2B}$ receptor agonist, 5'-N-ethylcar-boxamidoadenosine (NECA; 4 umol/l) increased cerebral blood flow. This effect of NECA (4 umol/l) was not blocked by pretreatment with adenylate cyclase inhibitor, MDL-12330 (20 umol/l). But effect of NECA (4 umol/l) was blocked by pretreatment with guanylate cyclase inhibitor, LY-83383 (10 umol/l). These results suggest that adenosine $A_{2B}$ receptor increases cerebral blood flow. It seems that this action of adenosine $A_{2B}$ receptor is mediated via the activation of guanylate cyclase in the cerebral cortex of the rats.

The effects of tube bundle geometry on vibration in two-phase cross-flow (2상 횡유동에서 열교환기 관군 배치에 다른 진동특성 고찰)

  • Two-phase cross-flow exists in many shell-tube heat exchangers such as steam generators, condensers and reboilers. An understanding of flow-induced vibration excitation mechanism is necessary to avoid problems due to excessive tube vibration. This paper presents the results of a series of experiments done on tube bundles of different geometries subjected to two-phase cross-flow simulated by air-water mixtures. Normal(30$^{\circ}$) and rotated (60$^{\circ}$)triangular, and normal(90$^{\circ}$) and rotated (45$^{\circ}$) square tube bundle configurations of pitch-to-diameter ratio of 1.2 to 1.5 were tested over a range of mass fluxes from 0 to 1,000kg/$m^2$ㆍ s and void fraction from 0 to 100%. The effects of tube bundle geometry on vibration excitation mechanism such as fluidelastic instability and random turbulence, and on dynamic parameters such as damping and hydrodynamic mass are discussed. A lower pitch-to-diameter results in a higher hydrodynamic mass. The effect of tube bundle configurations on damping and random turbulence excitation is minor. The effect of pitch-to-diameter on the fluidelastic instability, however, is significant.

The Thermocapillary Effect on Pure Conduction Mechanism in a Closed Square Cavity (수평 사각밀폐공간내의 전도열전달 기구에서 열모세관효과)

  • In a closed square cavity filled with a liquid, a cooling horizontal upper wall and a heating lower wall, the flow isn't generated under the ground-based condition when Rayleigh number is lower than 1700. In this mechanism, Ra=1534, Temperature and velocity fields near an air-bubble in silicon-oil under a cooled upper wall were investigated. Temperature and velocity fields is visualized using the thermo-sensitive liquid-crystal and light sheet visualization technique. The quantitative analysis fer the temperature and the flow fields were carried out by applying the image processing technique to the original data. The symmetry shape of two vortexes near an air bubble was observed. As the bubble size increased, the size of vortex and the magnitude of velocity increased. In spite of elapsed time, a pair of vortexes was the unique and steady-state flow in a square cavity and wasn't induced to the other flow in the surround region.

  • Friction stir spot welding (FSSW), developed based on principle of friction stir welding, has been paid attention as a new solid-state spot welding process. Since FSSW can produce high-quality weld in Al alloys more easily than resistance spot welding, this process has been already used for construction of Al components in the automotive industries. Despite the large industrial interests in FSSW, fundamental knowledge on welding phenomena of this process has not been fully understood. In this study, FSSW phenomena, such as the consolidation mechanism, the microstructural evolution and the material flow, were examined in Al alloy 6061. This study clarified that the elliptical zone found in the vicinity of the pin hole on the cross section was characterized by the initially lapped surface of two sheets. Moreover, the following material flow was proposed; capture of the upper material with the threads on the pin surface, spiral flow along the tool rotation, and then release at the tip of the pin.

  • This paper investigates the applicability of a modified version of TOPMODEL considering shallow subsurface storm flow in a forested mountaneous catchment. The macroporous soil structure provides a hydrological pathway for rapid runoff generation. A modified version of TOPMODEL introduces the two-storage system to analyze the hydrograph recession including rapid subsurface storm flow component. The two-month continuous hydrologic simulations of sulmachun watershed suggest that a modified version of TOPMODEL represents comprehensive and realistic flow generation mechanism comparing to those of an original version of TOPMODEL. The results of parameter calibration with Monte-Carlo method indicate a modified version of TOPMODEL produces a set of physically meaningful parameters.

  • Recent experimental data shows that an irregular fuel surface pops up during the combustion test. This may contribute to the agitated boundary layer due to blowing effect of fuel vaporization. Blowing effect can be of significance in determining the combustion characteristics of solid fuel within the oxidizer flow. LES was implemented to investigate the flow behavior on the fuel surface and turbulence evolution due to blowing effect. Simple channel geometry was used for the investigation instead of circular grain configuration without chemical reactions. This may elucidate the main mechanism responsible for the formation of irregular isolated spots during the combustion in terms of turbulence generation. The interaction of turbulent flow with blowing mass flus causes to breakup turbulent coherent structures and to form the small scale isolated eddies near the fuel surface. This mechanism attributes to the formation of irregular isolated sopt on the fuel surface.
