An Analysis of Flow Characteristics with Changing the Inside Shapes in Square Manhole (직사각형 맨홀의 내부형상변화에 따른 흐름특성 분석)

  • In storm sewer networks a lot of manholes are installed to maintain and connect a sewer of urban area. There are some shapes of manhole such as circular type, square type, and so on. Square shape manholes are installed to connect the large diameter drainage pipes in general and have lager head losses than circular one. Consequently, it is important to analyze the head losses in square manhole because the head losses in square manhole are much bigger than the friction losses in pipes. Hydraulic experimental apparatus which can be changed the inside shape in square manhole was installed for this study. The experimental discharge was $16{\ell}/sec$. The head loss coefficients in the manhole were calculated by the experimental results. The range of head loss coefficients in the general square manhole were from 0.33 to 0.48 and the range of head loss coefficients in the square manhole changed inside shape were from 0.23 to 0.28.

A Flow Quantity Distribution Characteristics of the Hot Water Header for Individual Room Control System (실별제어 온수분배기의 유량분배 특성)

  • Flow quantity to supply to a coil in floor heating system is important to achieve comfortable indoor air condition in the winter season. The hot water header is used to distribute the water into the coil. Experimental study has been performed using the water header that have 5 branches consisted of flow control valves and automatic shut-off valves. Each branch line connected it with X-L pipe. Experimental tests accomplished it to investigate the flow distribution characteristics of the hot water header. Experimental results show that the selection of the pump head and differential pressure are very important to save running energy of the system, and high differential pressure needs more friction loss in the case of suitable differential pressure for balancing of the header.

  • There are two kinds of method on hydraulic calculation of fire sprinkler system design. The one is using the computational program and the other is designer calculate system for oneself. In case of using the computational program, putting the input data in, the program calculate the friction loss, water flow, total height and so forth. If program user or designer doesn't know the basic idea and procedure of hydraulic calculation. Then, the outputs are different from each other. This paper suggests the hydraulic calculation procedure in design area as follow. Equivalent lengths of tees on the branch are selected base on the same pipe diameter which the tees are established, although the diameter of tee outlet is different. Even though there is a different friction loss of head from the other head, the pressure from the hydraulic end is bigger than a head loss, discharge flow is calculated by pressure from the hydraulic end.

An Experimental Study for Estimation of Head Loss Coefficients at Surcharged Circular Manhole (과부하 원형맨홀에서의 손실계수 산정을 위한 실험적 연구)

  • Urban sewer systems are designed to operate in open-channel flow regime and energy loss at circular manholes are usually not significant. However, the energy loss at manholes, often exceeding the friction loss of pipes under surcharge flow, is considered as one of the major causes of inundation in urban area. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the head loss associated with manholes, especially in surcharge flow. Hydraulic experimental apparatus which can be changed the invert type(CASE A, B, C) and step height(CASE I, II, III) was installed for this study. The range of the experimental discharges were from $1.0{\ell}/sec$ to $5.6\;{\ell}/sec$. As the manhole diameter ratio($D_m/D_{in}$) increases, head loss coefficient increases due to strong horizontal swirl motion. Head loss coefficient was maximum because of strong oscillation of water surface when the range of manhole depth ratios($h_m/D_{in}$) were from 1.0 to 1.5. The average head loss coefficients for CASE A, B, and C were 0.45, 0.37, and 0.30, respectively. Accordingly, U-invert is most effective for energy loss reduction at circular manhole. This head loss coefficients could be available to design the urban sewer system with surcharge flow.

Pressure Drop Characteristics of Air Particle Flow in Powder Transport Piping System (파우더 수송시스템의 공기입자 유동 압력강하 특성)

  • The pressure drop characteristics of air particle flow in a powder transport piping system were analyzed in this study. The pressure drop characteristics of air particle flow in the piping system have not well understood due to the complexibility of particle motion mechanism. Particles or powders suspended in the air flow cause the increase of the pressure drop and affect directly transport efficiency. In this study, the pressure drop in a powder transport piping system was analyzed with interactions of air flow and particle motion in straight and curved pipes. The total pressure drop increased with pipe length, mixture ratio, and friction factor of particles because of increased friction loss of air and particles in the piping system. For the coal powders of $74{\mu}msize$ and powder-to-air mass mixture ratio of 0.667, the total pressure drop under the consideration of powders and air flow was calculated as much as 30% higher than that air flow only.

Study of Engine Oil Jet System Effect on Engine Friction (Engine Oil Jet System이 Engine Friction에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구)

  • When turbochargers are applied to engines, the temperature of the engine becomes high, making the cooling of pistons very important. To solve this problem, an oil jet is used. The oil jet provides oil to the underside of piston for cooling. When an oil jet is used, oil pump size-up and oil cooler are needed because of the increased oil flow rate and higher oil temperature. On the other hand, these increase the friction torque of the engine. This study examined how much the friction torque of an engine increases by an oil jet, oil cooler, and oil pump size-up. In addition, the proportions of the friction torque of the engine increased by each part were measured by changing the engine assembly condition. At low speed, the oil pump and oil cooler had a larger effect on the friction torque than the other factors. At high speed, oil cooler had a larger effect than the other factors.

  • A regeneratively-cooled channel in a liquid rocket engine is used to effectively cool a combustion chamber inner wall from hot combustion gas, and the heat transfer/pressure loss characteristics should be predicted in advance to design cooling channels. In the present research, five cooling channels with different geometric dimensions were designed and the channels were respectively manufactured using cutter and endmill. By changing coolant velocity and downstream pressure, the effects of manufacturing method, channel shape, and flow condition on pressure losses were experimentally investigated and the results were compared with the analytical results. At same channel shape and flow condition, the pressure loss in the channel machined by the cutter was lower than that by the endmill. It was also found that the pressure loss ratio between the experimental result and the analytical data changed with the channel shape and flow condition.

  • The present study investigates flow characteristics in an optical disc drive (ODD). Detailed knowledge of the flow characteristics is essential to analyze flow-induced noise and vibration, forced convection and flow friction loss. The ODD used in a personal computer is used for the experiment and rotating velocity of disc is under the 4500 rpm. Time-resolved velocity component and velocity spectrum are obtained using the laser Doppler anemometry (LDA), and the flow patterns induced by rotating disc in the ODD are calculated by a commercial finite volume method at the same time. The results show that the front holes reduce flow-induced noise and the position of pickup body only affects flow near the window. Furthermore, it is possible for cooling of heat sources in the drive through measuring the flow fields under the tray. In addition, the numerical results are well matched up to the experimental results, therefore, the validation of the numerical results can be achieved. From the validation of numerical results, it is possible to predict the flow characteristics of the region where it is unable to conduct the experiment.

Performance Predictions of Gas Foil Journal Bearings with Turbulent Flows (난류 유동을 갖는 가스 포일 저널 베어링의 성능 예측)

  • Gas foil bearings (GFBs) enable small- to medium-sized turbomachinery to operate at ultra-high speeds in a compact design by using ambient air or process gas as a lubricant. When using air or process gas, which have lower viscosity than lubricant oil, the turbomachinery has the advantage of reduced power loss from bearing friction drag. However, GFBs may have high Reynolds number, which causes turbulent flows due to process gas with low viscosity and high density. This paper analyzes gas foil journal bearings (GFJBs) with high Reynolds numbers and studies the effects of turbulent flows on the static and dynamic performance of bearings. For comparison purposes, air and R-134a gas lubricants are applied to the GFJBs. For the air lubricant, turbulence is dominant only at rotor speeds higher than 200 krpm. At those speeds, the journal eccentricity decreases, but the film thickness, power loss, and direct stiffness and damping coefficients increase. On the other hand, the R-134a gas lubricant, which that has much higher density than air, causes dominant turbulence at rotor speeds greater than 10 krpm. The turbulent flow model predicts decreased journal eccentricity but increased film thickness and power loss when compared with the lamina flow model predictions. The vertical direct stiffness and damping coefficients are lower at speeds below 100 krpm, but higher beyond that speeds for the turbulent model. The present results indicate that turbulent flow effects should be considered for accurate performance predictions of GFJBs with high Reynolds number.

An Experimental Study for Estimation of Head Loss Coefficients at Surcharged Combining Junction Manholes (과부하 합류맨홀에서의 손실계수 산정을 위한 실험적 연구)

  • Energy loss at manholes, often exceeding friction loss of pipes under surcharged flow, is considered as one of the major causes of inundation in urban area. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze head losses at manholes, especially in case of surcharged flow. Hydraulic experimental apparatus which can change the manhole shape (square, circular) were installed for this study. In the experiments, two inflows ($Q_1,\;Q_2$) were varied from 0 to $4{\ell}$/sec and 15 combinations were tested in total. The flow ratios $Q_2/Q_3$ were varied from 0 to 1 for a total flow $Q_3$ ($Q_3=Q_1+Q_3$) of 2, 3, and $4{\ell}$/sec, respectively. The variation of head losses were strongly influenced by the lateral inflow because the head loss coefficient increases as the flow ratio $Q_2/Q_3$ increases. There was no significant difference of head loss between square manhole and circular one, and also no large variation of head loss as discharges change. The relation equations between K and $Q_2/Q_3$ were suggested in this paper.
