Urban drainage systems are generally designed as open channel flow. The system, however, shows a partially surcharged flow in its body, especially at junctions or manholes. Thus, a special case of this condition needs to be explained as pressurized flow condition for designing the sewer system. This study considered the surcharged manhole flows during an unexpected rainfall event or an excess of design frequency. Overflows from surcharged manholes and urban flooding can occur from the effect of surcharged flows. Thus, sewer systems should be designed with the concept of open channel flow and pressurized flow. Also, energy losses in a manhole need to be considered. The aim of this study is to develop the numerical model which can evaluate the effect of the energy losses at the manhole. The numerical model was verified and compared with hydraulic model and SWMM. The results showed that the water depth of numerical model was in good agreement with hydraulic model at the each manhole. However, the SWMM underestimated the water depth because that model ignored the energy losses at manholes. Thus, the developed numerical model in this study could be a useful tool for the assessment of a conveyance of urban drainage system.
A plant simulation code, MCSIM (Micro-Computer SIMulator), has been developed to simulate plant transient accidents for pressurized water reactors. Reactor coolant system is modeled using decoupled energy and momentum equations, drift flux two-phase flow model and integral momentum equation. A two-fluid pressurizer model is used to simulate the pressurizer dynamics. Pot Boiler model is used for steam generator, steady-state decoupled energy and momentum equations for secondary side system, and point kinetics equations for nuclear power calculation. For test of the present version of MCSIM, complete loss of flow and RCCA withdrawal accidents are calculated with MCSIM. The results are compared with those in FSAR of KNU 5 & 6.
Energy loss at manholes, often exceeding friction loss of pipes under surcharged flow, is considered as one of the major causes of inundation in urban area. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze head losses at manholes, especially in case of surcharged flow. Hydraulic experimental apparatus which can change the manhole shape (square, circular) were installed for this study. In the experiments, two inflows ($Q_1,\;Q_2$) were varied from 0 to $4{\ell}$/sec and 15 combinations were tested in total. The flow ratios $Q_2/Q_3$ were varied from 0 to 1 for a total flow $Q_3$ ($Q_3=Q_1+Q_3$) of 2, 3, and $4{\ell}$/sec, respectively. The variation of head losses were strongly influenced by the lateral inflow because the head loss coefficient increases as the flow ratio $Q_2/Q_3$ increases. There was no significant difference of head loss between square manhole and circular one, and also no large variation of head loss as discharges change. The relation equations between K and $Q_2/Q_3$ were suggested in this paper.
In order to estimate the effect of flow distributors connected to an upper nozzle of CMT(Core Makeup Tank) on the thermal-hydraulic characteristics in the tank, a simplified 2 inch Small Break Loss of Coolant Accident(SBLOCA) was simulated by skipping the decay power and Passive Residual Heat Removal System(PRHRS) actuation. The CMT is a part of safety injection systems in the SMART (System Integrated Modular Advanced Reactor). Each test was performed with reliable boundary conditions. It means that the pressure distribution is provided with repeatable and reproducible behavior during SBLOCA simulations. The maximum flow rates were achieved at around 350 seconds after the initial opening of the isolation valve installed in CMT. After a short period of decreased flow rate, it attained a steady injection flow rate after about 1,250 seconds. This unstable injection period of the CMT coolant is due to the condensation of steam injected into the upper part of CMT. The steady injection flow rate was about 8.4% higher with B-type distributor than that with A-type distributor. The gravity injection during hot condition tests were in good agreement with that during cold condition tests except for the early stages.

A new multi inner stage(MIS) cyclone was designed to remove the acidic gas and minute particles of harmful materials produced from electronic industry. To characterize gas flow in MIS cyclone, pressure and velocity distribution were calculated by means of computational fluid dynamics(CFD) commercial program. Also, the flow locus of particles and particle removal efficiency were analyzed by Lagrangian method. When outlet pressure condition was -1,000 Pa, the efficiency was the best in this study. Based on the CFD simulation result, the pressure loss and destruction removal efficiency was measured through MIS cyclone experiment.

In this study, a prediction theory for specific noise that is the overall characteristic of the fan has been proposed. This theory is based on total pressure prediction and broadband noise prediction. The specific noises of two forward curved fans with different number of blades were predicted. The flow around the impeller having 120 blades (MF120) was more biased at a certain positions than the impeller with 40 blades (MF40). An effective domain of the energy conversion of MF40 has extended overall than MF120. The total pressure was affected by the slip factor and pressure loss caused by the vortex flow. The suppression of a major pressure drop by the vortex flow and expansion of the effective domain for energy conversion contributed to an increase in the total pressure of MF40 at the design point. The position of maximum relative velocity was different for each fan. The relative velocity of MF120 was less than that of MF40 due to the deviation angle. The specific noise of MF120 was 2.7 dB less than that of MF40 due to the difference in internal flow. It has been quantitatively estimated that the deceleration in the relative velocity contributed to the improvement in the overall performance.

A two-dimensional time-domain, potential-theory-based fully nonlinear numerical wave tank (NWT) was developed by using boundary element method and the mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian (MEL) approach for free-surface node treatment. The NWT was applied to prediction of primary wave energy conversion efficiency of a bottom-mounted oscillating water column (OWC) wave power device. The nonlinear free-surface condition inside the chamber was specially devised to represent the pneumatic pressure due to airflow velocity and viscous energy loss at the chamber entrance due to wave column motion. The newly developed NWT technique was verified through comparison with given experimental results. The maximum energy extraction was estimated with various chamber-air duct volume ratios.
A new advanced safety feature of DVI+ (Direct Vessel Injection Plus) for the APR+ (Advanced Power Reactor Plus), to mitigate the ECC (Emergency Core Cooling) bypass fraction and to prevent switching an ECC outlet to a break flow inlet during a DVI line break, is presented for an advanced DVI system. In the current DVI system, the ECC water injected into the downcomer is easily shifted to the broken cold leg by a high steam cross flow which comes from the intact cold legs during the late reflood phase of a LBLOCA (Large Break Loss Of Coolant Accident)For the new DVI+ system, an ECBD (Emergency Core Barrel Duct) is installed on the outside of a core barrel cylinder. The ECBD has a gap (From the core barrel wall to the ECBD inner wall to the radial direction) of 3/25~7/25 of the downcomer annulus gap. The DVI nozzle and the ECBD are only connected by the ECC water jet, which is called a hydrodynamic water bridge, during the ECC injection period. Otherwise these two components are disconnected from each other without any pipes inside the downcomer. The ECBD is an ECC downward isolation flow sub-channel which protects the ECC water from the high speed steam crossflow in the downcomer annulus during a LOCA event. The injected ECC water flows downward into the lower downcomer through the ECBD without a strong entrainment to a steam cross flow. The outer downcomer annulus of the ECBD is the major steam flow zone coming from the intact cold leg during a LBLOCA. During a DVI line break, the separated DVI nozzle and ECBD have the effect of preventing the level of the cooling water from being lowered in the downcomer due to an inlet-outlet reverse phenomenon at the lowest position of the outlet of the ECBD.

In the present study extensisve numerical experiments are conducted using the CFD code, FLUENT, to investigate the energy dissipation due to perforated walls for various wall-thickness and flow conditions. A new empirical formula for energy loss coefficient considering the effect of the thickness of perforated wall is obtained based on the results of computational experiments. It is found that the energy loss coefficient decreases as the wall-thickness increases and the maximum coefficient reduction reaches upto 40% of the value calculated using the conventional formulas for the sharp-crested orifice. To check the validity of the new formula the reflection coefficient of waves due to perforated wall is evaluated and compared with the results of existing theories and hydraulic experiments. The result shows that the new formula is superior to the conventional ones.
