This paper describes the numerical simulation of the interaction between longitudinal vortices ("common flow up") and a 3-D turbulent boundary layer over a flat plate To analyze the common flow up Produced from vortex generators. the flow field behind the vortex generators Is modeled by the information that is available from studies on a half-delta winglet. Also. the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation for three-dimensional turbulent flows. together with a two-layer turbulence model to resolve the near-wall flow, is solved by the method of AF-ADI. The computational results predict that the boundary layer is thinned in the regions where the secondary flow is directed toward the wall and thickened where it is directed away from the wall Also. the numerical results. such as Reynolds stresses. turbulent kinetic energy and skin friction characteristics generated from the vortex generators . are reasonably close to the experimental data.
Some observational features on the July 5, 1995 substorm event are presented using the data from the Geotail satellite which was located at near-Earth plasma sheet, ${X}_{GSE}$ ∼ $-9.6R_{E}$, and quite close to the onset sector. Near-tail magnetic field reveals the typical dipolarizations starting ar ∼ 11-4 UT until ∼ 1113 UT. During the interval, two dipolarizations occur: First dipolarization is not strong and accompanies only weak(<150km/s) earthward/dawnward plasma flows, and in the second dipolarization that follows shortly, rather large amplitude magnetic fluctuations are seen, but it initiates with no significant earthward flow. The earthward bursty flow with a maximum speed of > 450km/s was observed, but delayed by ∼ 1 min with respect to the second dipolarization initiation. These features are in conflict with the flow-braking scenario for the substorm. Rather they fit better in the near-tail current disruption scenario.
A numerical study is done on the thrust vector control using gaseous secondary injection in the rocket nozzle. A commercial code, PHOENICS, is used to simulate the rocket nozzle flow. A $45^{\circ}-15^{\circ}$ conical nozzle is adopted to do numerical experiments. The flow in a rocket nozzle is assumed a steady, compressible, viscous flow. The exhaust gas of the rocket motor is used as an injectant to control the thrust vector of rocket at the constant rate of secondary injection flow. The injection location which is on the wall of rocket is chosen as a primary numerical variable. Computational results say that if the injection position is too close to nozzle throat, the reflected shock occurs. On the other hand, the more mass flow rate of injection is needed to get enough side thrust when the injection position is moved too far from the throat.

Flow visualization technique incorporating photochromic dye is used to study the flow characteristics of the gravity driven laminar wavy film. The film thickness and wave speed are successfully measured by flow visualization. As the inclination angle increases, the waves have higher peaks and lower substrate thickness. The measured cross stream velocity at the free surface is up to 10% of stream wise velocity, which shows enhanced mixing in the lump of the film. The measured stream wise velocity profiles are close to parabolic profile near the substrate and the peak but show significant velocity defect near the rear side of the wave. The measured wall shear rate distributions show good agreement with the previous workers' numerical results.
For the measurement of mass flow rate at a wide range of operation conditions, it is required that the critical nozzle gas different diameters, since the mass flow rate through the critical nozzle depends on the nozzle supply conditions and the nozzle throat diameter. In the present study, both computational and experimental investigations are performed to explore the variable critical nozzle. Computational work using the 2-dimensional, axisymmetric, compressible Navier-Stokes equations are carried out to simulate the gas flow through variable critical nozzle. In experimnet, a cylinder with several different diameters is inserted into the critical nozzle to vary the nozzle throat diameter. Computational results are compared with the experimented ones. The computed results are in close agreement with experiment. It is found that the displacement and momentum thickness of variable critical nozzle are given as a function of Reynolds numbers. The discharge coefficient of the variable critical nozzle is predicted using an empirical equation.

Solenoid-folw control type ABS is used with a 'dump and reapply' pressure control arrangement instead of using 2/2 (normal open/close) solenoid valves in convensional systems(sol. -sol. control type), a flow control valve is used which replaces the (no) inlet valve. The flow control valve controls fluid flow providing a nearly constant reapply rate( .theta. ) after the dump plase of ABS operation. In this study, to investigate a characteristics of brake pressure by PWM control, test rig was consisted of ABS hydraulic modulator, digital controller, pneumatic power supply and brake master cylinder. For comparison with experi- mental results, system modelling and computer simulation were performed. As a result, experiment results showed fairly agreement with the simulation. Also, it is shown that the pressure gradient (tan .theta. ) is affected by pressure, frequency, duty ratio and expressed with an exponential funtion.

The flow in the LOX manifold of liquid rocket has been investigated using a CAE technique with an objective of economical modeling of injection holes in order to reduce the overall computational cost of flow analysis during the optimal rocket design procedure. The computational geometry is very close to that of the actual rocket design and the flow condition through the injection holes resembles that in the actual manifold of the liquid rocket. The result shows that the flow in the plane just above the injection holes is not uniformly distributed in terms of pressure and mass flow rate and this is attributed to the large-scale flow patterns present the LOX manifold. Thus, the flow physics should be understood correctly before making any attempt to model the injection holes. In the present study, several boundary conditions which were designed to effectively replace the presence of injection holes have been tested and it was found that a simple modeling can be possible by mimicking the actual geometry of the injection holes. By using this simple injection hole modeling, it was able to obtain about 30% reduction in computational cost but it was still able to reproduce the flow patterns correctly. Also the flow has been analyzed after incorporating a couple of different types of pre-distributors in LOX manifold and the effect of those will be discussed.

Kelvin's (1887) theory that predicts position of ship wave crest can be applied only in deep water. Havelock's (1907) theory that predicts cusp locus angle can be applied in whole water depths but cannot predict the position of ship wave crest. In this study, using the linear dispersion fully, we develop the equations to predict ship wave crest in whole water depths and, using the developed equations, we predict cusp locus angle. We simulate ship wave propagation using FLOW-3D in the condition of Johnson's (1985) hydraulic experiment and find that the cusp locus angles predicted by the present theory are close to numerical results of FLOW-3D and hydraulic experimental data. We also simulate for various conditions and compare numerical results of distances between adjacent wave crests and values predicted by the present theory. For Froude number less than unity, the numerical results are close to the values predicted by the theory. For Froude number greater than unity, the constant value of $C_1$ which determines the distance between the ship and the first ship wave crest is almost equal to zero and the numerical results of distances between adjacent ship waves excluding the first ship are close to the values predicted by the theory.

Melt flow, heat and mass transfer of oxygen have been analyzed numerically in the process of Czochralski single crystal growth of silicon under the influence of misaligned cusp magnetic fields. Since the silicon melt in a crucible for crystal growth is of high temperature and of highly electrical-conducting, experimentation method has difficulty in analyzing the behavior of the melt flow. A set of simultaneous nonlinear equations including Navier-Stokes and Maxwell equations has been used for the modelling of the melt flow which can be regarded as a liquid metal. Together with the melt flow which forms the Marangoni convection, a flow circulation is observed near the comer close both to the crucible wall and the free surface. The melt flow tends to follow the magnetic lines instead of traversing the lines. These flow characteristics helps the flow circulation exist. Mass transfer characteristics influenced by the melt flow has been analyzed and the oxygen absorption rate to the crystal has been calculated and turned out to be rather uniform than in the case of an aligned magnetic field.

In this paper, a reliability-groundwater flow program is developed by coupling the 3-D finite element numerical groundwater flow program with first and second order reliability program. The numerical groundwater program developed called DGU-FLOW is verified by solving the examples of groundwater flow through the underground excavation and comparing the results with those of commercial MODFLOW 3D programs. Reliability routine of the program is also verified by comparing the probability of failure of the flow model from FORM/SORM with that of Monte-Carlo Simulation. The difference of out-flux and total head calculated near the bottom of the excavation using the deterministic 3D groundwater flow and the commercial programs was negligible. The reliability analysis of the groundwater flow showed that the probability of failure from the first and second order reliability method are quite close that of Monte-Carlo Simulation. Therefore, the developed program is considered effective for analyzing the groundwater flow with uncertainty in hydraulic conductivity of the soils.
