The heat transfer enhancement by pulsating flow in a plate heat exchanger has been experimentally investigated in this study. The effect of the pulsating flow, such as pulsating frequency and flow rate on the heat transfer as well as pressure drop in a plate heat exchanger has been studied in detail. Reynolds number in cold side of a plate heat exchanger is varied 100∼530 while that of hot side is fixed at 620. The pulsating frequency is considered in the range of 5∼30 Hz. The results of the pulsating flow are also compared with those of steady flow. It is found that the average heat transfer rate as well as pressure drop is increased as flow rate is increased for both steady flow and pulsating flow cases. When pulsating flow is applied to the plate heat exchanger, heat transfer could be substantially increased in particular ranges of pulsating frequency or Strouhal number; St=0.36∼0.60 and pressure drop is also increased, compared with those of steady flow. However, in the region of low pulsating frequency or high pulsating frequency, heat transfer enhancement is in meager. Heat transfer enhancement map is suggested based on Strouhal number and Reynolds number of pulsating flow.
Mass transfer experiment by naphthalene sublimation method has great advantages in measurement of local transfer coefficients in the region of a three dimensional flow or for a model of complex geometry, which is considered to be very difficult with conventional heat transfer measurements. Mass transfer data obtained by naphthalene sublimation technique are converted to the heat transfer data through heat/mass transfer analogy. This analogy is valid for a simple or laminar flow, but new insight is needed when applying to a turbulent flow or complex flow such as separation, reattachment and recirculation, The purpose of this research is to investigate how geometries and flow conditions incorporate heat/mass transfer analogy. Mass transfer experiments are performed using naphthalene sublimation technique for a flat plate, a circular cylinder, and rectangular cylinders. And mass transfer data are compared with earlier heat transfer measurements for the same geometries. Usefulness of analogy relation between heat and mass transfer is examined with these results.
We compared the heat transfer characteristics of the parallel and the counterflow flow in the concentric double tube of the Al2O3/water nanofluids using numerical methods. The high- and low-temperature fluids flow through the inner circular tube and the annular tube, respectively. The heat transfer characteristics according to the flow direction were compared by changing the volume flow rate and the volume concentration of the nanoparticles. The results showed that the heat transfer rate and overall heat transfer coefficient improved compared to those of basic fluid with increasing the volume and flow rate of nanoparticles. When the inflow rate was small, the heat transfer performance of the counterflow was about 22% better than the parallel flow. As the inflow rate was increased, the parallel flow and the counterflow had similar heat transfer rates. In addition, the effectiveness of the counterflow increased from 10% to 22% rather than the parallel flow. However, we verified that the increment in the friction factor of the counterflow is not large compared to the increment in the heat transfer rate.
Heat transfer coefficient were measured and new correlations were developed for two-phase heat transfer in a horizontal pipe for different patterns. Flow patterns were observed in a transparent circular pipe (2.54 cm I. D. and L/D=96) using an air/water mixture. Visual identification of the flow patterns was supplemented with photographic data and the results were plotted on the flow regime map proposed by Taitel and Dukler and agreed quite well with each other. A two-phase heat transfer experimental setup was built for this study and a total of 150 two-phase heat transfer data with different flow patterns were obtained under a uniform wall heat flux boundary condition. For these data, the superficial Reynolds number ranged from 640 to 35,500 for the liquid and from 540 to 21,200 for the gas. Our previously developed robust two-phase heat transfer correlation for a vertical pipe with modified constants predicted the horizontal pipe air-water heat transfer experimental data with good accuracy. Overall the proposed correlations predicted the data with a mean deviation of 1.0% and an rms deviation of 12%.
Heat transfer enhancement of three types of brazed plate heat exchangers has been evaluated experimentally. The effects of flow resonance in a plate heat exchanger on the heat transfer rate and pressure drop have been investigated in a wide range of mass flow rates in detail. The problem is of particular interest in the innovative design of a plate heat exchanger by flow resonance. The results obtained indicate that both heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop are increased as mass flow rate is increased, as expected. It is also found that the heat transfer enhancement is increased with an increase in the plate pitch, while the heat transfer is decreased with a decrease in the chevron angle. Pressure drop also increased with an increase in the plate pitch and with a decrease in the chevron angle. Heat transfer enhancement in the plate heat exchangers is maximized by flow resonance and the resonance frequency of the present plate heat exchangers is found to be in the range of $10~15\;Hz$.
Plate and shell heat exchanger(P&SHE) is widely applied as evaporators or condensers in the refrigeration and air conditioning systems for their high efficiency and compactness. In order to set up the database for the design of the P&SHE, heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics for single phase flow of water in a plate & shell heat exchanger are experimentally investigated in this study. Single phase heat transfer coefficients were measured for turbulent water flow in a plate and shell heat exchangers by Wilson plot method. The shell side heat transfer resistance was varied and the overall heat transfer coefficients were measured. The single-phase heat transfer coefficients in a plate side were obtained by Wilson plot method. Single-phase heat transfer correlations based on projected heat transfer area and friction factor correlations have been proposed for single phase flow in a plate and shell heat exchanger.
The present study investigates convective heat/mass transfer and flow characteristics inside a rotating two-pass rectangular duct. A naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to determine the detailed local heat transfer coefficients using the heat and mass transfer analogy. The objective of this study is to determine the effects of turning geometry with rotation for 0.0$\leq$Ro$\leq$0.24. The results reveal that the sharp-turn corner has the larger pressure drop and lower heat transfer in the post-turn region than those of the round-turn corner. The strong secondary flow enhances heat transfer for the round-turn corner. Coriolis force induced by the rotation pushes the high momentum core flow toward the trailing wall in the first passage with radially outward flow and toward the leading wall in the second passage with radially inward flow. Consequently, the high heat transfer rates are generated on the trailing surface and the leading surface in the first and second passage, respectively. However, the strong secondary flow due to the turning dominates the flow pattern in the second passage, thus the heat transfer differences between the leading and trailing surfaces are small with the rotation.
This report presents experimental results on the heat transfer coefficients in the boiling region of spray cooling for actual metallurgical process. In this study, the heat flux distribution of a two dimensional dilute spray impinging on hot plate was experimentally investigated. Based on the experimental results, they classified the heat transfer area into the stagnation region and wall-flow region. In the stagnation region, the local heat transfer coefficient relates mainly to the droplet-flow-rate supplied from spray nozzle directly, so the local heat transfer coefficients is good agreement with the predicted values from correlation for spray cooling proposed by former report However, the local heat transfer coefficient in wall-flow region is larger than predicted values, and it is found that the rebounding droplets-flow-rate must be accurately evaluated to predict the local heat transfer coefficient in this region.
Numerical analysis for the flow and heat transfer in solid particle moving beds of heat exchangers is presented. The solid particle flow through the bundle of heat source tubes by the gravitational force. The heat energy is transferred through the direct contact of particles with the heat source tubes. The viscous-plastic fluid model and the convective heat transfer model are employed in the analysis. The flow field dominantly influences the total heat transfer in a heat exchanger. As the velocities of solid particles around the heat source tubes increase, the amount of heat transfer from the tubes increases. Some examples are presented to show the performance of the numerical model. The flow effect on the heat transfer is also studied through the examples.
Two phase flow phenomena are observed in many industrial facilities and make much importance of optimum design for nuclear power plant and various heat exchangers. This experimental study has been investigated the classification of the flow pattern, the local void distribution and convective heat transfer in swirl and non-swirl two phase flow under the isothermal and nonisothermal conditions. The convective heat transfer coefficients in the single phase water flow were measured and compared with the calculated results from the Sieder-Tate correlation. These coefficients were used for comparisons with the two-phase heat transfer coefficients in the flow orientations. The experimental results indicate, that the void probe signal and probability density function of void distribution can used into classify the flow patterns, no significant difference in voidage distribution was observed between isothermal and non-isothermal condition in non-swirl flow, the values of two phase heat transfer coefficients increase when superficial air velocities increase, and the enhancement of the values is observed to be most pronounced at the highest superficial water velocity in non-swirl flow. Also two phase heat transfer coefficients in swirl flow are increased when the twist ratios are decreased.
