Three-dimensional flow and aerodynamic loss in the tip-leakage flow region of a high-turning first-stage turbine rotor blade with a squealer tip have been measured with a straight miniature five-hole probe for the tip gap-to-chord ratio, h/e, of 2,0%. This squealer tip has a indent-to-chord ratio, $h_{st}/c$, of 5.5%. The results are compared with those for a plane tip ($h_{st}/c\;=\;0.0%$). The squealer tip tends to reduce the mass flow through the tip gap and to suppress the development of the tip-leakage vortex. Therefore, it delivers lower aerodynamic loss in the near-tip region than the plane tip does. At the mid-span, however, the aerodynamic loss has nearly the same value for the two different tips.

Three-dimensional flow characteristics within a high-acceleration first-stage turbine vane passage has been investigated in a newly-built vane cascade for propulsion. The result shows that there is a strong favorable pressure gradient on the vane pressure surface. On its suction surface, however, there exists not only a much stronger favorable pressure gradient than that on the pressure surface upstream of the mid-chord but also a subsequent adverse pressure gradient downstream of it. By employing two different oil-film methods with upstream coating and full-coverage coating, a four-vortex model horseshoe vortex system can be identified ahead of each leading edge in the cascade, and the separation line of inlet boundary layer flow as well as the separation line of re-attached flow is provided as well. In addition, basic flow data such as secondary flow, aerodynamic loss, and flow turning angle downstream of the cascade are obtained.

Thrust vector control system is control device which is mounted exit of the nozzle to generate pitch, yaw and roll directional force by deflecting flow direction of the supersonic jet from the nozzle. By obtaining control force, jetvane which is exposed in jet flow is working thermal and aerodynamic load. Axial thrust loss and side thrust is affected by shock patterns and interactions between jetvanes according to jetvane geometry and turning angle. In this study, we designed 6 types of jetvane to evaluate pitch, yaw and roll characteristics of ietvane in supersonic flow, and perform the cold flow test in range of turning angles of jetvanes between $0^{\cire}$ and $25^{\cire}$ by $5^{\cire}$ respectively. Also, calculation is going side by side to analyse flow interaction. Results show that there is no interactions between jetvanes upto turning angle 20$^{\circ}$, chord and lead length ratio is very important parameter to aerodynamic performance and maximum thrust loss is appeard to 17% of axial thrust in roll directional control.

A simple model of the tip leakage flow models of the rotor downstream flow is developed, based on Lakshminarayana's theoretical concept on the tip clearance flow and the experimental data published in open literature. And new spanwise distribution models of deviation angle and pressure loss coefficient due to the tip leakage flow are formulated for use in association with the streamline curvature method as a through flow analysis. Combining these new models and previous deviation and loss models due to secondary flow, a robust streamline curvature method is established for flow analysis of single-stage, subsonic axial turbines with wide ranges of turning angle, aspect ratio and blading type. At the exit from rotor rows, the flow variables are mixed radially according to a spanwise transport equation. The proposed streamline curvature method is tested against a forced vortex type turbine as well as a free vortex type one. The results show that the spanwise variations of flow angle, axial velocity and loss coefficients at rotor exit are predicted with good accuracy, being comparable to a steady three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis. This simple and fast flow analysis is found to be very useful for the turbine design at the initial design phase.
This paper presents the numerical simulation results of heat transfer and friction loss for a rotating two-pass duct with the airfoil-guide vanes in the turning region. The Kriging model is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis of flow field and heat transfer with shear stress transport turbulent model. To improve the heat transfer performance, angle and location of the airfoil-guide vanes have been selected as design variables. The optimization problem has been defined as a minimization of the objective function, which is defined as a linear combination of heat transfer related term and friction loss related term with a weight factor. The airfoil-guide vanes in the turning region keep the high level of heat transfer while the friction loss has a low value. By comparing the presence or absence of airfoil-guide vanes, it is shown that the airfoil-guide vanes exhibited the best heat transfer performance to improve the blade cooling except the first passage.

Regenerative cooling passage to guarantee the thermal survivability in high performance rocket engine combustors could have complex configurations of the branching/merging of channels and flow turning, etc. By applying the classical hydraulic coefficients which can be found in the literature according to the flow conditions, hydraulic characteristics in regenerative cooling passages can be obtained effectively through dividing the pressure loss into friction loss and local resistance loss. Satisfactory agreement has been obtained by comparing the present results with experimental measurement of water flow test. In addition, the present results were in good agreement with CFD results when the actual coolant, kerosene was used. Therefore, the application of the present method is expected to be useful to design regeneratively cooled combustors.
The effect of pressure-side opening length on three-dimensional flow fields and aerodynamic losses downstream of a cavity squealer tip has been investigated in a turbine rotor cascade for the squealer rim height-to-chord ratio and tip gap height-tochord ratio of $h_{st}/c$ = 5.05% and h/c = 2.0% respectively. The opening length-to-camber ratio is changed to be $OL/c_c$ = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and 0.7 The results show that longer OL leads not only to weaker secondary flow but also to lower aerodynamic loss in the tip leakage vortex region, while it significantly widens the area with high aerodynamic loss in the passage vortex region. The aerodynamic loss coefficient mass-averaged all over the measurement plane is kept almost constant for $0.0{\leq}OL/c_c{\leq}0.3$, whereas it increases rapidly for $OL/c_c$ > 0.3 in proportion to $OL/c_c$. There is little deterioration in flow turning with increasing $OL/c_c$.

A numerical analysis on three dimensional turbulent incompressible flows through linear cascades of turbine rotor blades with high turning angles has been performed by using a generalized k-.epsilon. model which is a high Reynolds number form and derived by RNG(renormalized group) method to account for the variation of the rate of strain. A second order upwind scheme is used to suppress numerical diffusion in approximating the convective terms. Body-fitted coordinates are adopted to represent the complex blade geometry accurately. For the case without tip clearance, velocity vectors and static pressure contours are shown to be in good agreement with previous experimental results. For the case with tip clearance, the effects of the passage vortex and tip clearance flow on the total pressure loss as well as their interactions are discussed.
The effect of incidence angle on the three-dimensional flow and aerodynamic loss in the tip leakage flow region downstream of a turbine rotor cascade has been investigated for two tip gap-to-chord ratios of h/c=0.0% (no tip gap) and 2.0%. The incidence angle is changed to be $i=-10^{\circ}$, $0^{\circ}$, and $5^{\circ}$. The results show that for $i=5^{\circ}$, secondary flows including the passage vortex are intensified noticeably, and there is a strong interaction between the passage and tip leakage vortices. For $i=-10^{\circ}$, however, the passage vortex is weakened significantly, so that there exists only a strong leakage-jet-like secondary flows near the casing wall. For h/c=0.0% and 2.0%, aerodynamic loss tends to increase with increasing i from $-10^{\circ}$ to $5^{\circ}$. A small increment of i in its positive incidence range results in a remarkable aerodynamic loss increase, while increasing i in the negative incidence range leads to a small change in the aerodynamic loss generation.

A numerical study was performed for a vane of a compressor with a high-turning angle and meridional divergence. At first, the effect of the suction position was discussed. Then, the optimal suction position was applied to the cascades with the aspect ratio of 2.53 and 0.3, respectively, to get the knowledge of the effect of the endwall boundary layer removal on the secondary flow along the blade height. At last, using the critical principles of the three-dimensional separation, the topological structures of the flow patterns of the body surfaces and the separation configurations were discussed in detail. The results show that the largest reduction of the total loss can be achieved when the suction slot is near the suction side. The topological structure as well as the separation configuration varies due to boundary layer removal, which restrains the flow separation at the corner and delays or depresses the separation on the suction surface. Compared with the original cascade, the cascade with the endwall boundary layer removal has a higher blade loading along the most span. Furthermore the flow loss decreases and distributes uniformly along the span.
