In this present study, mechanical properties of the Zr-Ti-Cu-Ni-Be bulk metallic glass are characterized by compression test over a wide range of temperatures and strain rates. Three different types of deformation behavior have been identified as a result, viz., Newtonian viscous flow, non-Newtonian flow and brittle fracture without plastic deformation. A transition state theory is applicable fur the flow stress - strain rate curve that contains the transition from Newtonian to non-Newtonian flow. Based on the relationship between viscosity and strain rate within undercooled liquid state, we can easily obtain the experimental deformation map and suggest the boundaries among different deformation behavior of this alloy.

Prediction on initial motion of sediment is crucial to evaluate sediment transport and channel stability. The condition of incipient movement of sediment is characterized by bed shear stress, which is generated from force of moving water against the bed of the channel, and by critical shear stress, which depends on force resisting motion of sediment due to the submerged weight of the grains. When the bed shear stress exceeds the critical shear stress, sediment particles begin rolling and sliding at isolated and random locations. In Mountain River, debris flow frequently occurs due to heavy rainfall and can lead some natural stones from mountain slope into the bed river. This phenomenon could add additional forces to sediment transport system in the bed of river and also affect or change direction and magnitude of sediment movement. In this paper, evaluations on incipient motion of uniform coarse gravel under falling spheres impacts using small scale flume channel were conducted. The drag force of falling spheres due to water flow and length movement of falling spheres were investigated. The experiments were carried out in flume channel made by glass wall and steel floor with 12 m long, 0.6 m wide, and 0.6 m deep. The bed slopes were selected with the range from 0.7% to 1.5%. The thickness of granular layer was at least 3 times of diameter of granular particle to meet grain placement condition. The sphere diameters were chosen to be 4cm, 6 cm, 8 cm, 10 cm. The spheres were fallen in to the bed channel for critical condition and under critical condition of motion particle. Based on the experimental results, the Shields curve of particles Reynold number and dimensionless critical shear stress were plotted. The relationship between with drag force and the length movement of spheres were plotted. The pathways of the bed material Under the impact of spheres falling were analyzed.

Indentation and small punch tests are very powerful methods to monitor the materials reliability since they are very simple, easy and almost non-destructive. First, recently-developed continuous indentation test can provide the more material properties such as hardness, elastic modulus, yield strength, work-hardening exponent, etc., than the conventional hardness test. In our study, the true stress-strain curve was derived from the indentation load-depth curve for spherical indentation. In detail, the strain was able to be obtained from plastic depth/contact radius ratio, and the flow stress was from mean contact pressure through the analysis of elastic-plastic indentation stress field. Secondly, the small punch test was studied to evaluate the fracture toughness and defomation properties such as elastic modulus and yield strength. Like the indentation test, this test can be applied without severe damage of the target structure.
A simple prediction procedure was investigated for calculating the stresses and displacements of a circular opening. Unlike existed approaches, the proposed approach starts each step with a radius increment. The stress for each annulus could be obtained analytically, while strain increments for each step can be determinate numerically from the compatility equation by finite difference approximation, flow rule and Hooke's law. In the successive manner, the distributions of stresses and displacements could be found. It should be noted that the finial radial stress and displacement were equal to the internal supporting pressure and deformation at the tunnel wall, respectively. By assuming different plastic radii, GRC and the evolution curve of plastic radii and internal supporting pressures could be obtained conveniently. Then the real plastic radius can be calculated by using linear interpolation in the evolution curve. Some numerical and engineering examples were performed to demonstrate the accuracy and validity for the proposed procedure. The comparisons results show that the proposed procedure was faster than that in Lee and Pietrucszczak (2008). The influence of annulus number and dilation on the accuracy of solutions was also investigated. Results show that the larger the annulus number was, the more accurate the solutions were. Solutions in Park et al. (2008) were significantly influenced by dilation.

Abandoned mines often cause environmental problems, such as alteration of landscape, metal contamination, and landslides due to a heavy rainfall. Geotechnical and rheological tests were performed on waste materials corrected from Imgi waste rock dump, located in Busan Metropolitan City. Debris flow mobility was examined with the help of 1-D BING model which was often simulated in both subaerial and subaqueous environments. To determine flow curve, we used a vane-penetrated rheometer. The shear stress (${\tau}$)-shear rate (${\dot{\gamma}}$) and viscosity(${\eta}$)-shear rate (${\dot{\gamma}}$) relationships were plotted using a shear stress control mode. Well-known rheological models, such as Bingham, bilinear, Herschel-Bulkley, Power-law, and Papanastasiou concepts, were compared to the rheological data. From the test results, we found that the tested waste materials exhibited a typical shear shinning behavior in ${\tau}$-${\dot{\gamma}}$ and and ${\eta}$-${\dot{\gamma}}$ plots, but the Bingham behavior is often observed when the water contents increased. The test results show that experimental data are in good agreement with rheological models in the post-failure stage during shearing. Based on the rheological properties (i.e., Bingham yield stress and viscosity as a function of the volumetric concentration of sediment) of waste materials, initial flowing shape (5 m, 10 m, and 15 m) and yield stress (100 Pa, 200 Pa, 300 Pa, and 500 Pa) were input to simulate the debris flow motion. As a result, the runout distance and front velocity of debris flow are in inverse propositional to yield stress. In particular, when the yield stress is less than 500 Pa, most of failed masses can flow into the stream, resulting in a water contamination.
Flow properties of all suspensions are controlled by their flow units. The factors effecting on the flow units are the characteristics of the particle itself (surface properties, particle sizes, particle shapes and etc.), the electrostatic interactions among the particles and the influences of the medium in the suspensions. Here, we studied the transition between the flow units with shear rate which can be added to the above factors. For the concentrated starch-water suspensions, by using the Couette type rotational viscometer, we confirmed that at low shear rate, dilatancy is appeared, but it is transformed to thixotropy with increasing shear rate. In order to explain this fact, we derived the following flow equation, representing the transition from dilatancy to thixotropy with shear rate, by assuming the equilibrium between the flow units. f = X1β1s./α1 + 1/(1+Kexp(c0s.2/RT))((1-X1)/α2)sinh-1{(β2)0 s. exp(c2s.2/RT)} + K exp(c0s.2/RT)/(1+K exp(c0s.2/RT))((1-X1)/α3)sinh-1{(β3)0 s. exp(-c3s.2/RT)} By applying this flow equation to the experimental flow curves for the concentrated starch-water suspensions, the flow parameters were obtained. And, by substituting the obtained flow parameters to the flow equation, the theoretical flow curves were reproduced. Also, Ostwald curve was represented by applying the flow equation, and the applicability for stress relaxation was discussed.
Grain morphology, phase stability and mechanical properties in binary Ti-Al alloys containing 43-52 mo1% Al have been investigated. Isothermal forging was used to control the grain sizes of these alloys in the range of 5 to $350{\mu}m$. Grain morphology and volume fraction of ${\alpha}_2$ phase were observed by optical metallography and scanning electron microscopy. Compressive properties were evaluated at room temperature, 1070 K, and 1270 K in an argon atmosphere. Work hardening is significant at room temperature, but it hardly took place at 1070 K and 1270 K because of dynamical recrystallization. The grain morphologies were determined as functions of aluminum content and processing conditions. The transus curve of ${\alpha}$ and ${\alpha}+{\gamma}$ shifted more to the aluminum-rich side than was the case in McCullough's phase diagram. Flow stress at room temperature depends strongly on the volume fraction of the ${\alpha}_2$ phase and the grain size, whereas flow stress at 1070 K is insensitive to the alloy composition or the grain size, and flow stress at 1270 K depends mainly on the grain size. The ${\alpha}_2$ phase in the alloys does not increase the proof stress at high temperatures. These observations indicate that improvement of both the proof stress at high temperature and the room temperature ductility should be achieved to obtain slightly Ti-rich TiAl base alloys.
A numerical simulation is carried out to investigate the effect of flow rate variation and performance characteristics of double-suction centrifugal pump. Two types of pump which have different impeller inlet breadth and curvature of the shroud line consist of six blades impeller and shroud ring. Finite-volume method with structured mesh and $k-\omega$ Shear Stress Transport turbulence model was used to guaranty more accurate prediction of turbulent flow in the pump impeller. Total head, power and overall efficiency were calculated to obtain performance characteristics of two types of pump according to the variation of flow rate. From the results, impeller having smooth curve along the shroud line obtained good performance. The lower flow rate, the more circulation region, flow unsteadiness and complicate flow pattern are observed. Complicated internal flow phenomena through impellers such as flow separation, pressure loss, flow unsteadiness and performance are investigated and discussed.

This paper deals with dynamic tensile characteristics for the polypropylene used in an IP(Instrument Panel). The polypropylene is adopted in the dash board of a car, especially PAB(Passenger Air Bag) module. Its dynamic tensile characteristics are important because the PAB module undergoes high speed deformation during the airbag expansion. Since the operating temperature of a car varies from $-40^{\circ}C$ to $90^{\circ}C$ according to the specification, the dynamic tensile tests are performed at a low temperature($-30^{\circ}C$), the room temperature($21^{\circ}C$) and a high temperature($85^{\circ}C$). The tensile tests are carried out at strain rates of six intervals ranged from 0.001/sec to 100/sec in order to obtain the strain rate sensitivity. The flow stress decreases at the high temperature while the strain rate sensitivity increases. Tensile tests of polymers are rather tricky since polymer does not elongate uniformly right after the onset of yielding unlike the conventional steel. A new method is suggested to obtain the stress-strain curve accurately. A true stress-strain curve was estimated from modification of the nominal stress-strain curves obtained from the experiment. The modification was carried out with the help of an optimization scheme accompanied with finite element analysis of the tensile test with a special specimen. The optimization method provided excellent true stress-strain curves by enforcing the load response coincident with the experimental result. The material properties obtained from this paper will be useful to simulate the airbag expansion at the normal and harsh operating conditions.

The mechanical properties of ferrite-martensited dual phases steels are affected by the microstructural factors, such as martensited volume fractions, ferrite grain size, strength ratio, connectivity, etc. Two phase alloys are technologically important. However, there is a lack of understanding as to stress-strain behavior of dual phase alloy in terms of stress-strain behavior of each component phases. The lack of the understanding stems from the complex deformation behavior of two phase alloys. The aim of this study is to rationalize stress-strain behavior of dual phase alloy in terms of the stress-strain behavior of component phase by systematically considering all the factors listed above. It was found that for a given martensite volume fraction, the calculated stress-strain curve was higher for a finer particles size than for a coarse particle sized within the range of the strains considered, and this behavior was seen for all the different volume fraction alloys considered. The calculated stress-strain curves were compared with corresponding experimental curves, and in general, good agreement was found. The maximum difference in flow stress between the calculated and the experimental results occurs at the nearly beginning of the plastic deformation.
