  • Instrumented indentation technique is a new way to evaluate nondestructive such mechanical properties as flow properties, residual stress and fracture toughness by analyzing indentation load-depth curves. This study evaluated quantitatively the flow properties of steels and residual stress of weldments. First, flow properties can be evaluated by defining a representative stress and strain from analysis of deformation behavior beneath the rigid spherical indenter and the parameters obtained from instrumented indentation tests. For estimating residual stress, the deviatoric-stress part of the residual stress affects the indentation load-depth curve, so that by analyzing the difference between the residual-stress-induced indentation curve and residual-stress-free curve, the quantitative residual stress of the target region can be evaluated. The algorithm for flow property evaluation was verified by comparison with uniaxial tensile test and the residual stress evaluation model was compared to mechanical cutting and ED-XRD results.

  • To satisfy good mechanical and optical properties of polymer-coated film products, it will be indispensable to elucidate the molecular orientation of polymer chains within coating liquids in coating flows. Using hybridized numerical method between computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and Brownian dynamics (BD) simulations can provide the useful information for the better quality control of coated films. Flexible polymer chains, e.g., ${\lambda}$-DNA molecules here, change their conformation according to the flow strength and the flow type. The molecular conformation within the coated film on the web or substrate is quite different, because the polymer chains experience the complicated flow strength and flow types in flow field. Especially in the slot coating flow, these chains are more extended by the extension-like flow field generated in the free surface curvature just beyond the downstream die region. Also, the polymer chain extension beneath the free surface can be affected by the die geometry, e.g., the coating gap, changing flow field.

  • The objectives of the present study are to numerically and experimentally investigate the steady and pulsatile flow phenomena in the circular tubes, to quantitatively compare the flow characteristics of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids, and to find meaningful hemodynamic information through the flow analysis in the human blood vessels. The particle image velocimetry is adopted to visualize the flow fields in the circular tube. and the results from the particle image velocimetry are used to validate the results of the numerical analysis. In order to investigate the blood flow phenomena in the circular tube. constitutive equations, which are suitable to describe the rheological properties of the non-Newtonian fluids. are determined, and the steady and pulsatile momentum equations are solved by the finite volume prediction. The velocity vectors of the steady and pulsatile flow in the circular tube obtained by the particle image velocimetry arc in good agreement with those by the numerical analysis. For the given mass flow rate. the axial velocity profiles of the Newtonian and the non-Newtonian fluids appear differently. The pulsatile flow phenomena of the Newtonian and the non-Newtonian fluids are quite different from those of the steady flow.

  • Characteristics of flow patterns in horizontal gas-liquid two-phase flow for two different sizes of pipe were investigated based upon a statistical analysis of differential pressure fluctuations at an orifice. The probability density function and the power spectral density function of the traces indicate peculiar shapes depending upon the two-phase flow regime. Mixed and separated flows also could be identified by the autocorrelation function. The transition region from separated flow to mixed flow also could be identified by these statistical properties. The experimental data determined by this method were compared with the flow pattern maps suggested by other investigators. The result indicates that the statistical characteristics of differential pressure fluctuations at orifices may be a useful tool for identifying flow patterns of horizontal gas-liquid two-phase flow.

  • A blood flow simulator is one of the experimental devices used to better understand the cardiovascular system. Time-Domain analysis is not sufficient to understand the cardiovascular system because of the effects related to pulsating flows. Even when the mean pressure and mean flow rate of the blood flow simulators are satisfied, the dynamic properties can differ from the desired performance. In this paper, the Windkessel model, a well-known mathematical model of the cardiovascular system, was employed to obtain optimized pressure using initial values. The Windkessel parameters, including flow resistance, R, are expected to lead to a better understanding of the dynamic behavior of cardiovascular systems.

  • Large eddy simulation(LES) of fully developed turbulent pipe flow has been performed to investigate the effect of Reynolds number on the flow field at $Re_{\tau}$=180, 395, 590 based on friction velocity and pipe radius. A dynamic subgrid-scale model for the turbulent subgrid-scale stresses was employed to close the governing equations. The mean flow properties, mean velocity profiles and turbulent intensities obtained from the present LES are in good agreement with the previous numerical and experimental results currently available. The Reynolds number effects were observed in the mean velocity profile, root-mean-square of velocity fluctuations, Reynolds shear stress and turbulent viscosity.

Furthermore, the budgets of the Reynolds stresses and turbulent kinetic energy were computed and analyzed to elucidate the effect of Reynolds number on the turbulent structures.

  • In this present study, mechanical properties of the Zr-Ti-Cu-Ni-Be bulk metallic glass are characterized by compression test over a wide range of temperatures and strain rates. Three different types of deformation behavior have been identified as a result, viz., Newtonian viscous flow, non-Newtonian flow and brittle fracture without plastic deformation. A transition state theory is applicable fur the flow stress - strain rate curve that contains the transition from Newtonian to non-Newtonian flow. Based on the relationship between viscosity and strain rate within undercooled liquid state, we can easily obtain the experimental deformation map and suggest the boundaries among different deformation behavior of this alloy.

  • This study has focused on the possibility for recycling of tailings from the Sangdong tungsten mine as powder of superfluidity self-compacting concrete. The experimental tests for slump-flow, time required to reach 500mm of slump flow(sec), time required to flow through V-funnel(sec) and filling height of U-box test(mm) were carried out in accordance with the specified by the Japanese Society of Civil Engineering(JSCE). The result of this study, in case of superfluidity self-compacting concrete mixed with tailings, slump-flow was decreased with increasing mixing ratio. But time required to reach 500mm of slump flow(sec), time required to flow through V-funnel(sec) and filling height of U-box test(mm) were satisfied a prescribed range.

  • The flow accelerated galvanic corrosion characteristics of a carbon steel coupled to stainless steel were investigated in deaerated alkaline-chloride solutions as a function of flow velocities(0, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6 m/s), pH(8, 9, and 10) and temperature(25, 50 and $75^{\circ}C$). The electrochemical properties of specimens were investigated by potentiodynamic test and galvanic corrosion test using RCE(Rotating Cylinder Electrode). Carbon steel did not show passive behavior in the alkaline-chloride solution. The galvanic current density increases with increasing flow velocity and temperature, but decreased with increasing pH. Flow velocity had a small effect on the galvanic current density at $25^{\circ}C$, whereas the flow velocity increased galvanic current density significantly at $50^{\circ}C$ and $75^{\circ}C$. This might be due to the increased solubility of magnetite at the higher temperature.
