  • We propose simple analog MOS circuits producing the one-dimensional compact motion-sensing circuits. In the proposed circuit, the optical flow is computed by a number of local motion sensors which are based on biological motion detectors. Mimicking the structure of biological motion detectors made the circuit structure quite simple, compared with conventional velocity sensing circuits. Extensive simulation results by a simulation program of integrated circuit emphasis (SPICE) indicated that the proposed circuits could compute local velocities of a moving light spot and showed direction selectivity for the moving spot

  • A simple new technique of particle depth position measurement, which can be applied for three-dimensional velocity measurement of fluid flows, is proposed. Two color illumination system that intensity is encoded as a function of z-coordinate is introduced. A calibration procedure is described and a profile of small sphere is detected by using the present method as preliminary test. Then, this method is applied to three-dimensional velocity field measurement of simple flow fields seeded with tracer particles. The motion of the particles is recorded by color 3CCD camera. The particle position in the image plane is read directly from the recorded image and the depth of each particle is measured by calculation of the intensity ratio of encoded two color illumination. Therefore three-dimensional velocity components are reconstructed. Although the result includes to some extent error, the feasibility of the present technique for three-dimensional velocity measurement was confirmed.

  • Pancreatitis is a known complication of cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass. Although ischemia is believed to be a factor, the exact cause of pancreatitis after cardiopulmonary bypass remains unknown. We prospectively studied 67 consecutive patients undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass for evaluation of the pancreatic injury after cardiopulmonary bypas. Serial measurement of amylase level in serum and urine was done postoperatively. Hyperamylasemia was detected in 15 patients[22.4% , of whom no patient had pancreatitis. There was no significant difference between serum amylase level and parameters such as cardiopulmonay bypass time, aortic cross clamp time, mean blood pressure, rectal temperature, flow rate, and use of circulatory arrest during cardiopulmonary bypass. Hyperamylasuria was detected in 8 patients[11.9% , and urine amylase level was elevated significantly in the groups with prolonged cardiopulmonary bypass, mean blood pressure more than 40mmHg, and rectal temperature more than 20 $^{\circ}$C. We recommend that serum amylase level and/or amylase-creatinine clearance ratio is measured for ealy detection and management of pancreatitis after cardiopulmonary bypass.

  • This work reports development of novel liquid-level sensors based on the $3{\omega}$ method. The sensors determine the liquid level by measuring the thermal response as in the conventional hot-wire technique. However the sensors employ an AC heating method to enhance the sensitivity, noise resistance and time response. Also, the microfabricated thin-film structure of the sensor provides mass-producibility as well as improved sensor performance owing to the increase in the surface-volume ratio of the sensor. Two different types of the sensor are developed: one for point detection of the fluid phase and the other for monitoring continuous variation of liquid level. Notable is that the performance of the sensor is not considerably affected by the liquid flow.

  • Respiration monitoring is important in many clinical situations due to its relationship to vitality. But present commercial monitoring systems are bulky and expensive, so they are inadequate to be used for long term recording or out-patients application. We have developed a low cost, low power, handhold respiration monitoring system based on airflow measurement. Respiration flow is indirectly detected using a thermister or a themocouple sensor. Real time recording of respiration rate, abnormality detection and apnea alarming are available.

  • A new method is presented that uses guided wave techniques for sludge and blockage detection in long-range pipelines. Existing techniques have the limitations that the sludge position needs to be known a priori and the area to be inspected needs to be accessible. A novel guided wave technique has been developed that allow the sludge or blockages to be detected remotely without the need to access the specific location where the pipe is blocked, nor to open the pipe. The technique measures the reflection of guided waves by sludge that can be used to accurately locate the blocked region. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is demonstrated and confirmed by experimental measurements.

  • Geophysical surveys (electrical resistivity, self-potential, and magnetic methods) and streamwater sample analysis have been carried out at a site of tailings of waste deposits in an abandoned mine, Jangpoong, which is situated in Kowesan-Gun, Chungbuk-Do. The research was aimed at investigating the suitability of the various geophysical methods for detection of AMD (acid mine drainage) paths, and ultimately mapping of preferred AMD flow channels by incorporating the water sample analysis. Electrical resistivity section from the dipole-dipole line represents the low-resistivity zone trending northwest toward the stream nearby. The positions of the resistivity anomalies for AMD channels are well correlated to the ones from the various geophysical surveys. In addition they correspond to the sites of the higher peaks for the pH, EC, heavy metal content for the water sample data.

  • A 12-year-old bitch, Yorkshire terrier, was admitted to the Chungbuk National University animal hospital with draining from mammary masses in the left and right mammary glands. She was involved in the mammary masses, suffering bilateral inguinal hernia. Physical examination during the hospitalization demonstrated the masses in right (3 cm) and left (1.5 cm) mammary glands. Blood pool images didn\`t show the subtle increase in blood flow to the inguinal hernia, and the increase of radionuclide distribution to the mammary gland on the soft tissue phase. However, delayed bone images showed a very focal lesion in the right mammary gland. These findings were confirmed on a subsequent biopsy, which also revealed adenocarcinoma with areas of malignant new bone formation. We present a case of primary mammary adenocarcinoma with $^{99m}Tc-MDP$ activity relative to normal bone. Tumor in the bitch demonstrates malignant new bone formation as the likely mechanism for the marked radiotracer avidity.

  • Since in-core flux thimble tube wear the due to flow-induced vibration could degrade the integrity of nuclear reactor, the effective detection and interpretation of the wear is important. In order to establish an inspection technique for thimble tubes, an eddy current experiment was performed to determine the optimum test frequency, defect sensitivity and evaluation accuracy. Eddy current probes were designed and fabricated with a theory. Specimens with artificial defects were fabricated using electro discharge machining method. The results from inspection technique developed and on-site inspection showed good applicability.

  • A 20-year-old man underwent a Tc-99m HMPAO labeled leukocyte scan for the evaluation of an infection at the stump of an AK amputation, which was conducted due to an open communicated fracture of the left lower leg. Blood-flow and blood-pool images demonstrated a pseudoaneurysm with a focus of intense activity medial to the stump, and centered within a large photopenic defect by surrounding hematoma. Delayed image obtained at 3 hours post-injection showed persistent intense and slight increased activity, Contrast angiography confirmed the presence of a pseudoaneurysm arising from a branch of the left superficial femoral artery.
