The information on the heat transfer characteristics, flow pattern and pressure drop, are very important for the desing of general heat exchanger, refrigerating system, air conditioning system and energy recovery system. In these systems, water or lubricating oil contained in working fluid affects greatly the flow and heat transfer condition and this phenomena must be considered in the practical design. An experiment has been performed for studying the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the forced convective horizontal flow of R-113 under the range of the liquid single phase state to the boiling flow state. Basic experimental results are obtained in the case that water or lubricating oil does not contaminate in the test fluid. Experimental results are as follows; (1) The local heat transfer coefficients in the nucleate boiling region and transition boiling region are almostly ten times as large as that of liquid single phase flow. (2) The measured heat transfer coefficient in the present experimental range is relatively agreed well with the predicted value from the various experimental results for the boiling flow.

An experimental investigation was performed to study flow boiling heat transfer of deionized water in a microchannel. Measurement and evaluation of boiling heat transfer coefficients were carried out using a single horizontal rectangular microchannel having a hydraulic diameter of $100{\mu}m$. Tests were performed for mass fluxes of 90, 169 and 267 $kg/m^2$s and heat fluxes of 200-700 $kW/m^2$. Test results showed that the measured boiling heat transfer coefficients had no dependence on mass flux and vapor quality. Most macro-channel correlations of boiling heat transfer coefficient did not provide reliable predictions.

Characteristics of flow boiling heat transfer in microchannels were investigated experimentally. The microchannels consisted of 9 parallel trapezoidal channels with each channel having 205 ${\mu}m$ of bottom width, 800 ${\mu}m$ of depth, $3.6^{\circ}$ of sidewall angle, and 7 cm of length. Tests were performed with R113 over a mass velocity range of 150~920 $kg/m^2s$, heat flux of 10~100 $kW/m^2$ and inlet pressures of 105~195 kPa. Flow boiling heat transfer coefficient in microchannels was found to be dominated by heat-flux. However the effect of mass velocity was not significant. Contrary to macrochannel trends, the heat transfer coefficient was shown to decrease with increasing thermodynamic equilibrium quality. A new correlation suitable for predicting flow boiling heat transfer coefficient was developed based on the laminar single-phase heat transfer coefficient and the nucleate boiling dominant equation. Comparison with the experimental data showed good agreement.

A study of literatures on flow boiling heat transfer and two-phase flows inside microchannels is summarized. The potential applications, fabrication method and efforts to determine certain dimensional threshold for microchannels classifications are discussed. For the last two decades, numerous two-phase flow and heat transfer models for microchannels have been developed; many of them were derived from empirical models originally applied for conventional channels. Those models are discussed here along with a brief review on recent development of theoretical and phenomenological-based models for microchannels. This study is devoted to provide a review of important issues on flow boiling heat transfer and two-phase flows inside microchannels, including two-phase flow patterns, boiling heat transfer mechanism and correlations developments, pressure drop and prediction methods, and critical heat flux.

Flow boiling heat transfer in small-diameter round tubes has been experimentally studied. The experimental apparatus consisted mainly of refrigerant pump, condenser, receiver, test section of a 1.67 mm inner-diameter round tube and pre-heater for control of refrigerant quality at the inlet of test section. To investigate the effect of bubble nucleation site characteristics of different tube materials, three different tubes of copper, aluminum and brass were used. The ranges of the major experimental parameters were 5∼30 ㎾/$m^2$ of the wall heat flux, 0.0∼0.9 of the inlet vapor quality and the refrigerant mass flux was fixed at 600 kg/$m^2$s. The experimental results showed that the flow boiling heat transfer coefficients in small tubes were affected only by heat flux, but independent of mass flux and vapor quality. The effect of tube material on flow boiling heat transfer was observed small.

This paper presents a experimental study of two-phase flow boiling of FC-72 in multi channels. Flow boiling heat transfer coefficients are obtained with mass flux ranging from 152.9 to $353.9kg/m^2s$ and heat flux from 5.6 to $46.1kW/m^2$. The experimental results show that the heat transfer is governed by nucleate boiling mechanism in the low heat flux region. However, it is found that the effects of nucleate boiling and forced convection boiling are combined as the heat flux increases. A new correlation to predict the heat transfer coefficient is developed by using the dimensionless number such as Reynolds number, Weber number, boiling number. This correlation shows good predictive accuracy against the measured data.

To understand EHD nucleate boiling heat transfer enhancement, EHD effects on R-113 nucleate boiling heat transfer in a non-uniform electric field were investigated. The pool boiling heat transfer and the dynamic behavior of bubbles in d.c./a.c. electric fields under a saturated or subcooled boiling were studied by using a plate-wire electrode and a high speed camera. From the pool boiling heat transfer study, the shift of the pool boiling curve, the increase of the heat transfer and the delay of ONB and CHF points to higher heat fluxes were observed. From the dynamic behavior of bubbles, it was observed that bubbles departed away from the whole surface of the heated wire in radial direction due to EHD effects by a nonuniform electric field. With increasing applied voltages, the bubble size decreased and the active nucleation site and the departure number of bubbles showed the different trend. The present study indicates that the EHD nucleate boiling heat transfer is closely connection with the dynamic behavior of bubbles and the secondary flow induced near the heated surface. Therefore, the basic studies on the bubble behavior such as bubble frequency, bubble diameter, bubble velocity and flow characteristics are necessary for complete understanding of the enhancement mechanism of the boiling heat transfer using an electric field.
The present study is an experimental investigation of nucleate boiling heat transfer mechanism in pool boiling from wire heaters immersed in saturated FC-72 coolant and water. The vapor volume flow rate departing from a wire during nucleate boiling was determined by measuring the volume of bubbles, varying $25{\mu}m,\;75{\mu}m,\;and\;390{\mu}m$, from a wire utilizing the consecutive-photo method. The effects of the wire size on heat transfer mechanism during a nucleate boiling were investigated by measuring vapor volume flow rate and the frequency of bubbles departing from a wire immersed in saturated FC-72. One wire diameter of $390{\mu}m$ was selected and tested in saturated water to investigate the fluid effect on the nucleate boiling heat transfer mechanism. Results of the study showed that an increase in nucleate boiling heat transfer coefficients with reductions in wire diameter was related to the decreased latent heat contribution. The latent heat contribution of boiling heat transfer for the water test was found to be higher than that of FC-72. The frequency of departing bubbles was correlated as a function of bubble diameters.

Boiling heat transfer coefficients of pure refrigerants(R22, R32, R125, R134a, R290, and R600a) and refrigerant mixtures(R32/R134a and R290/R600a) are measured experimentally and compared with several correlations. Convective boiling term of Chen's correlation predicts experimental data for pure refrigerants fairly well(root-mean-square error of 12.1% for the quality range over 0.2). An analysis of convective boiling heat transfer of refrigerant mixtures is performed for an annular flow to study degradation of heat transfer. Annular flow is the subject of this analysis because a great portion of the evaporator in refrigeration or air conditioning system is known to be in the annular flow regime. Mass transfer effect due to composition difference between liquid and vapor phases, which is considered as a driving force for mass transfer at interface, is included in this analysis. Correction factor $C_F$ is introduced to the correlation for the pure substances through annular flow analysis to apply the correlation to the mixtures. The flow boiling heat transfer coefficients are calculated using the correlation considering nucleate boilling effect in the low quality region and mass transfer effect for nonzazeotropic refrigerant mixtures.

Film boiling heat transfer of the subcooled turbulent liquid film flow on a horizontal plate was investigated by theoretical and experimental studies. In the theoretical analysis, by solving the integral energy and momentum equations analytically, some generalized expressions for Nusselt number was deduced. Next, by comparing the deduced equations with the experimental data on the turbulent film boiling heat transfer of the subcooled thin liquid film flow, the semi-empirical relation between the Nusselt number based on the modified heat transfer coefficient and the Reynolds number was obtained. The correlating equation was very similar to that of the turbulent heat transfer in a single phase flow, and it was found that the heat transfer was dissipated to increase the liquid temperature.
