  • Reliable hydrologic data acquisition is the basic and essential requirement for efficient water management. Especially the acquisition of various stream data in a certain location is very important to construct on alarm system to response an urban flood which occurs frequently due to the effect of climate change. Although the frequency of stream inundation flood occurrence becomes low owing to the consistent stream improvement, the urban flood due to the drainage system problems such as deterioration and bad management occurs continuously. The consistent management and current status understanding of the urban drainage system is essential to reduce the urban flood. The purpose of this study is to develop the urban runoff network flow velocity monitoring system which has the capability of collecting stream data whenever, wherever and to whomever without expert knowledge using Code Division Multiple Access technique and Bluetooth near-distance wireless communication technique. The urban runoff network flow velocity monitoring system consists of three stages. In the first stage, the stream information obtained by using ubiquitous floater is transferred to the server computer. In the second stage, the current state of the urban drainage system is assessed through the server computer. In the last stage, the information is provided to the user through a GUI. As a result of applying, the developed urban runoff network flow velocity monitoring system to Woncheon-Stream in Suwon, the information necessary for urban drainage management can be managed in real time.

  • The present study aims to apply a surface image velocimetry(SIV) system to video images captured with CCTV and estimate the flood discharge. The CCTV was installed at the Hancheon Bridge of the Han Cheon in Jeju Island for disaster surveillance, and seven flood events occurred in 2012 were used. During the image analyses, input parameters, interrogation areas and searching areas were determined with proper calibration procedures. To check for accuracy and applicability of SIV, the velocities and flood discharges estimated by SIV were compared with the measured ones by an electromagnetic surface velocimeter, Kalisto. The comparison results showed fairly good agreements. The RMSE(Root Mean Square Error) values between two instruments showed a range of 4.13 and 14.2, and the determination coefficients reached 0.75 through 0.85. It means that the SIV could be used as a good alternative method for other traditional velocity measuring instruments in measuring flood discharges.

  • Civil engineers always face the challenge of uncertainty in planning, building, and maintaining infrastructure. These works rely heavily on a variety of surveying and monitoring techniques. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are an effective approach to obtain information from an additional view, and potentially bring significant benefits to civil engineering. This paper gives an overview of the state of UAV developments and their possible applications in civil engineering. The paper begins with an introduction to UAV hardware, software, and control methodologies. It also reviews the latest developments in technologies related to UAVs, such as control theories, navigation methods, and image processing. Finally, the paper concludes with a summary of the potential applications of UAV to seismic risk assessment, transportation, disaster response, construction management, surveying and mapping, and flood monitoring and assessment.

  • In this study, change in vegetation on bars was analyzed using the data on hydrology and river morphology with on-site photographic monitoring data for the sites of interest of the Naeseong Stream during the period from March 2013 to July 2016 when the impoundment of Yeongju Dam began. The effect of flow condition on burial and removal of vegetation covered on bar surfaces was elucidated by comparison of on-site photographic monitoring data with continuous water level plotted with on the cross-section profile. In 2014 burial happened due to late flood, while July flood caused burial and removal in 2016. On the contrary vegetation increased in 2015 due to low flow without flood. Results of this study showing natural changes in vegetation will be reference to changes which is expected to be caused by dam impoundment.

  • For effective conservation of ocean and harbor, long-term and systematic development of the ocean and harbor monitoring system is essential. The monitoring system capable of real-time and accurate data acquisition is necessary for dealing with contamination such as red tide and the flood. This paper introduces the effective and economical real-time harbor environmental monitoring system that utilizes PCS wireless data communication technology. The monitoring system has various functions such as multiple communication, TCP/IP protocol for wireless internet access, system time synchronization, bi-directional communication between the measuring device and the server. The system has been implemented at Shinseondae harbor pier in Busan to validate the systems stability and effectiveness in data acquisition. The acquired real-time ocean and harbor environmental data is expected to have a large effect, when shared by public through internet.

  • In this study, we deployed the cable tunnel inspection and monitoring system by wireless sensor network. It is shown that the wireless sensor network which is composed of sensor, wireless communication module, and gateway can be applied to cable tunnel monitoring system. Sensors considered herein are flame detection sensor, flood detection sensor, intruder detection sensor, and temperature sensor, etc. It is also found that the wireless sensor network can deliver sensing data reliably by wireless sensing technology. The gateway system that can transmit sensed data to server by CDMA is developed. Monitoring system is constructed by web service technology, and it is observed that this system can monitor the present state of tunnel without difficulties. The system provides an alternative to inspecting and monitoring the tunnel efficiently where the conventional wired system is infeasible.

  • Recently, a rivers' bridge that locate on among the mountains area is destroyed by debris accumulation and debris flow, because of frequent occurrence of typhoon and a localized torrential downpour. therefore a river make a part of dam's effect. Actually, this situation gives damages like inundation of a bridge upper stream area's. Generally, It the main cause of the occurrence route of the debris accumulation is that outbreaks of driftwood and debris flow because of landslide, that occurred by severe rain storm. Also, a lot of debris are occurred when big flood come up during long period at this time, this kind of debris accumulation remove to other place, in several, and specially, debris accumlation move to the place where the depth of water is deep and velocity is fast river center. According to these kind of fact, this research put in effect and analyze that movement characteristic's numerical simulations of debris accumulation at flood according to a domestic outside literature investigation, on-site monitoring survey and parameter scenario which comes out through the hydraulic modeling analysis.

  • In 2011, floods were at the worst stage of devastation in Chao Phraya river basin of Thailand. The purpose of this study is to trace the flood inundation area around Chao Phraya river basin by using Terra MODIS image because it has the ability of spatiotemporal dynamics. The MODIS indices, which included the enhanced vegetation index(EVI), land surface water index(LSWI), and the difference in the values of EVI and LSWI(DVEL), were extracted from MODIS product MOD09 8-day composite datasets with a spatial resolution of 500m from Jul. 29, 2011 to Jan. 09, 2012. We found that combined application of EVI, LSWI, and DVEL was suitable for monitoring flood inundation. For the extracted flood inundation area and water-related area. The result can be used to acquire the flood inundation data scattered and demonstrate the potential for the use of MODIS data for temporal and spatial detection of flood effects.
