  • The hydrological frequency of the flood in July 2000 at Seosi stream basin in Gurye and the bed scour of the stream channel were estimated to investigate the bed scour related with Jeongjang bridge collapse. The storm over the basin in July 2000, 303mm/day was 103year frequency rainfall and the equivalent flood was 2580cms. As the results of 100year and 30year flood application, flood level 30.78~31.38m and mean velocity 3.79~4.03m/s were appeared. And the purification project of Seosi stream increased the velocity of the section near to Jeongjang bridge by the improvement of conveyance at the downstream. The local scour at pier was the major factor of bed scour at Jeongjang bridge site and the total scour at pier No.6 was increased from 2.32m to 2.45m by the purification project.

  • Annual average precipitation of Korea is 1,277 mm and around 2/3 of annual precipitation and 74 % of available water resources occurred during monsoon period. In recent years, many agricultural reservoirs have been heightened to increase flood control capacity, reduce flooding damage at downstream areas, and provide sustainable environmental flow during drought period. Thus in this study, the flood control effects of heightening of reservoir banks were simulated with HEC-ResSim and HEC-RAS models. These modes were applied to Bonghak reservoir and it was found that flood control effects were 3~4.5 % with 7 -m heightening. Also, with proper operation (1 m lower of full water level) of reservoir right before the monsoon period, flooding at downstream could be prevented even with design storm of 80 -year recurrence interval. As shown in this study, heightening of agricultural reservoir provides positive effects in flood control and flood damage reduction.

  • Urban flooding occurs in the form of internal-water inundation on roads and lowlands due to heavy rainfall. Unlike in the case of rivers, inundation in urban areas there is lacking in research on predicting and warning through measurement data. In order to analyze urban flood patterns and prevent damage, it is necessary to analyze flooding measurement data for various rainfalls. In this study, the pattern of urban flooding caused by rainfall was analyzed by utilizing the urban flooding measuring sensor, which is being test-run in the flood prone zone for urban flooding management. For analysis, 2019 rainfall data, surface water depth data, and water level data of a street inlet (storm water pipeline) were used. The analysis showed that the amount of rainfall that causes flooding in the target area was identified, and the timing of inundation varies depending on the rainfall pattern. The results of the analysis can be used as verification data for the urban inundation limit rainfall under development. In addition, by using rainfall intensity and rainfall patterns that affect the flooding, it can be used as data for establishing rainfall criteria of urban flooding and predicting that may occur in the future.

  • Loopnet model was developed to simulate unsteady flow in the looped network channel, considering change of the time and space. In this study, the looped solution algorithm was derived and the accuracy and stability of the model was tested. The Gulpo river system was used to calculate the flood water levels considering the hydraulic structures, tidal effect and inflow hydrographs. The result of the simulation showed that the accuracy and stability of this model was reliable. The change of flood water level of the Gulpo River system and the spillway section were not greatly affected by the operation water level of the navigation channel. But this analysis showed that roughness was one of the very important physical factor in changing flood water level.

  • The retention basin is a hydraulic structure for flood mitigation by storing river flow over a design flood. In this study, numerical models were adopted to simulate the flood mitigation effects by a retention basin. The large flood condition was applied as a boundary condition to consider an abnormal flood caused by climate change. Furthermore, the two-dimensional numerical model was adopted to regenerate the complex flow pattern due to the topography and lateral flow near the retention basin. The numerical results of the one- and two-dimensional model were analyzed and compared. The results showed that the two-dimensional model is more applicable to assessing flood mitigation by the retention basin with a complex topography and lateral flow patterns.

  • In the flood plain, river facilities such as sports facilities and ecological park are builded up since the late 2000s. The recent increase of rainfall intensity and flood frequency results in the immersions of parks and river facilities located in the flood plain. Therefore it is necessary to perform the numerical analysis for the extreme rain storm in the flood plain. In this study, to analyze the hydraulic impact by lowering and rising of the water level at flood plain, Both the FaSTMECH, which is a quasi-unsteady flow analysis model to be used for simulating the wet and dry, and the Nays2D, which is unsteady flow analysis model, are used in this study. Also, the flow velocity distribution and the inundation are compared over a period of the typhoon. As a result, the flow velocity distribution at flood plain showed very low values compared to the flow rate in the main channel. This means that the problem of sedimentation is more important than that of erosion in the flood plain.

  • In this study, a 2-D flood inundation model was developed to evaluate the impact of levee failure in a natural basin for flood analysis. The model was applied to analyze the inundation flow from the levee break of Gamcheon river during the typhoon Rusa on October 31 through September 1, 2002. To verify the simulated results, wide range field surveys have been performed including the collection of NGIS database, land use condition, flooded area, and flow depths. Velocity distributions and inundation depths were presented to demonstrate the robustness of the model. Model results have good agreements with the observed data in terms of flood level and flooded area. The model is able to compute maximum stage and peak discharge efficiently in channel and protected lowland. Methodology considering radar-rainfall estimation using cokriging scheme, flood-runoff and inundation analysis in this study will contribute to the establishment of the national integrated flood disaster prevention system and the river or protect lowland management system.

  • This study analyzed the hydraulic effects of Singok submerged weir in the lower Han River. 1-D hydraulic flood routing model was used and calibration and verification were performed using 8 flood or nonflood events. Flow characteristics were analyzed using various outflows of Paldang Dam and tidal data of the Yellow Sea. Water level increase effects by establishment of Singok submerged weir were as following, when maximum flood tidal was 2.4m, highest water level increased about 0.65m, and lowest water level increased about 1.25m in the downstream of Jamsil submerged weir. In Hangang Bridge, due to the Singok submerged weir, when maximum flood tidal was 2.4m, tidal range was 0.07m and decrement of tidal range was about $90\%$. And when maximum flood tidal was 5.5m, tidal range was 1.6m and decrement of tidal range was about $35\%$. When the outflow of Paldang Dam was over 20,000cms, tidal range was below about 0.06m, and tidal effect did not appear hardly.

  • In order to understand the circulation of nutrient between muddy tidal flat and the surrounding coastal area, tidal time-scale variations in nutrient concentrations were seasonally investigated at the entrance of Hampyeong Bay. The results show that the temperature was higher in ebb tide and lower in flood tide during the summer, but it was lower in ebb tide and higher in flood tide during the autumn/winter. The salinity was higher in flood tide and lower in ebb tide during the summer/winter because of the inflow of external sea water resulting from the increase in the tide level. By contrast, the salinity was lower in flood tide and higher in ebb tide during the autumn. Salinity difference was lower than 0.3 psu between flood tide and ebb tide during survey period. Meanwhile, all nutrient concentrations observed in Hampyeong Bay was lower in flood tide and higher in ebb tide during the summer, and by contrast, it was higher in flood tide and lower in ebb tide during the winter. Characteristically, no clear variation of concentrations was found depending on the tide level during the autumn. This tidal variations imply that the muddy tidal flat of Hampyeong Bay supplies nutrients to the seawater in summer and removes nutrient from the seawater in winter. During tidal cycle, seasonal variation of nutrient concentration in seawater is considered as the result of complex interactions between the mud flat and external sea water.

  • The system for predicting flood of river at Flood Control Office is made up of a rainfall-runoff model and FLDWAV model. This system is mainly operating to predict the excess of the flood watch or warning level at flood forecast points. As the demand for information of the management and operation of riverside, which is being used as a waterfront area such as parks, camping sites, and bike paths, high-level forecasts of watch and warning at certain points are required as well as production of lowland flood forecast information that is used as a waterfront within the river. In this study, a technology to produce flood forecast information in lowland areas of the river used as a waterfront was developed. Based on the results of the 1D hydraulic analysis, a model for performing spatial operations based on high resolution grid was constructed. A model was constructed for Andong district, and the inundation conditions and level were analyzed through a virtual outflow scenarios of Andong and Imha Dam.
