The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of bio-floc system that is composed of effective microorganisms (EM) on the microbial composition and water qualities in rearing water and the growth of Chinese white shrimp, Fenneropenaeus chinensis. To investigate the microbial composition according to the bio-floc levels, the study was conducted at 100 and 150% of bio-floc after 5 and 10 days in bio-floc system. The results showed that total bacteria count (TBC) and the counts of Latobacillus sp., Bacillus sp. and Rhodobactor sp., were significantly decreased after 5 days in bio-floc system. To assess the growth of F. chinensis according to the concentrations of bio-floc, the study was conducted at the bio-floc concentrations; 0 (control), 60, 80, 100, 120 and 140% of the prepared bio-floc for 90 days. The growth factors such as daily length and weight gain were considerably increased at the concentrations of bio-floc 100, 120, and 140% after 90 days. As water quality indicators, the values of total-N, NH4+-N and PO4--P were analyzed, and they were significantly decreased at 120 and 140% of bio-floc, compared to the control. The results demonstrated that combination of EM showed the synergic effect on removing N and P.

An assessment of flocculation was performed by measuring the distribution of the floc size during sedimentation in water works. The size and number of flocs have a greater effect on an evaluation of the efficiency of flocculation rather than the turbidity. The data was collected in situ using particle image velocimetry and image analysis. The measurements were carried out at a water depth of 1m. The removal efficiency of the total organic compounds, UV absorbance and turbidity depended on the size and floc size distribution in flocculation as the G value. The G value of 50 sec-1, 30 sec-1 and 10 sec-1 showed the highest degree of efficiency in the case of an inlet water turbidity of 5 NTU, and the highest degree of efficiency was observed at a G value of 65 sec-1, 40 sec-1 and 10 sec-1 when the inlet water turbidity was 263 NTU. The number of flocs with a distribution of above $1,200{\mu}m$ was 14. The dynamics between two important growth mechanisms were investigated as the energy input changed. This is a certain method that makes use of the size and number of flocs as an efficiency assessment.
In this study, we have investigated to find optimal pre-treatment flocculation condition by analyzing the floc growth rate with mixing conditions and the membrane permeation flux for pre-treatment step of the membrane process. The higher mixing intensity showed a constant floc size index (FSI) values, and lower mixing intensity increased the degree of dispersion of the FSI values. Results of comparing the distribution characteristics of the FSI value and the permeation flux were more effective in increasing flux when the FSI values were 0.2 or higher. The degree of dispersion of FSI was relatively large in 40 rpm mixing condition compared to 120 rpm. In 40 rpm mixing condition, it decreased the permeation flux compared to 120 rpm because various sizes of flocs were distributed. Coagulation-UF membrane process enhanced 30%~40% of the flux rate compare to UF alone process, and the coagulation-MF process increased up to 5% of the flux rate compare to MF alone process. Pre-treatment, that is, coagulation process, has been found to be less effects on relatively larger pore size for MF membrane. For UF membrane, the flux was a little bit same when applying only the rapid mixing process or rapid mixing with slow mixing processes together. In case of MF membrane, the flux was improved when rapid mixing process applied with slow mixing process together.
Pseudomonas putida 3SK, which was constructed by the conjugal transfet of the $CAM::TOL^{*}$ plasmid of Pseudomonas putida CSnA and the NAH plasmid of Pseudomonas putida KCTC 2403 into n-alkane assimilating Pseudomonas putida KCTC 2405, showed a broad degradation spectrum and floc-forming ability. This strain degraded m-toluic acid, naphthalene, camphor and decane simultaneously. $Hg^{2+}$ at the concentration of 1 ppm in the minimal medium could not inhibit the growth of this strain. The degradation of m-toluic acid by Pseudomonas putida 3SK was not repressed by the easily utilizable compounds, such as glucose and succinate. But, the addition of formalin inhibited the growth of Pseudomonas putida 3SK. After the cultivation of this strain on the artificial wastewater containing m-toluic acid, naphthalene, camphor and decane for 24 hr, the initial COD value (1500) of the artificial wastewater was declined to 300.
The characteristic floc growth of Al-based coagulants was investigated in the aspect of mixing intensity and visualization of generated flocs during coagulation and flocculation processes. Zeta potential of turbid particles in the artificial water nearly approached to zero at pH 8-9, in which TDS and conductivity were minimized. The removal rate of turbidity and phosphate was maximized at the optimal mixing intensity of rapid and slow mixing stages. After the rapid mixing stage of coagulation process, small particles ($3-5{\mu}m$) were abruptly generated, and higher mixing intensity made more numbers of flocs. With the progress of slow mixing stage, the number of small particles were decreased with the simultaneous increase of intermediate particles ($7-21{\mu}m$). The number of large particles (>$23{\mu}m$) were maximized at the lowest rapid mixing intensity of $95.1sec^{-1}$, whereas small particles (<$5{\mu}m$) were maximized at the highest rapid mixing intensity of $760.7sec^{-1}$.

A physicochemical process called Ultra Rapid Coagulation(URC) can dramatically remove organics, metals, and phosphates in wastewater by adding weighted coagulation additive(WCA) and recycling sludge into the coagulation basin to increase the growth rate and adsorption ability of floc. Also this process can improve floc settling rate than conventional coagulation process and reduce the pollutants loaded into the receiving water for securing water source. It was evaluated that WCA and sludge added have effects on the removal efficiency and estimated the possibilities of reusing the effluent from this process.

The main objective of this research is to study feasibility for applying metal membrane to remove particles from air scouring membrane backwash water. Also, the research was conducted to investigate the influence of polyamine coagulation on floc growth in membrane backwash water as pretreatment for removal particles. From the results of experiments for evaluating the influence of polyamine coagulation on floc growth, it was investigated that particles in the rage of $2{\sim}50{\mu}m$ grew up to $30{\sim}5,000{\mu}m$. In addition, all six metal membranes showed lower removal efficiency, which was 0.87~13.89%, in the case of no polyamine coagulant. On the other hand, in the case of injecting polyamine coagulant, those did extremely high efficiency in 56~92%. From the SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) images of filtered wiremesh and metal foam membrane, sieve effects were predominant for liquid solid separation in wiremesh and adsorption and diffusion capture effects were predominant in metal foam membrane.
In this study, the effects of mixing intensity and coagulant dosages on the characteristics of floc growth for phosphorus removal were investigated. The experiments were conducted under Al/P molar ratio of 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0; rapid mixing intensity with G value of 100, 300, and 500 $s^{-1}$. The characteristics of floc growth were measured by flocculation index (FSI) and the removal efficiencies of phosphorus by using different size filters. The removal efficiencies of soluble phosphorus increased as Al/P molar ratio and rapid mixing intensity increased. However, the highest removal efficiencies of T-P were observed at G value of 300 $s^{-1}$. When Al/P molar ratio was lower than 1.0, the value of FSI at G value of 500 $s^{-1}$ was the largest. However, when Al/P ratio was larger than 1.0, the value of FSI at G value 300 $s^{-1}$ was the largest. Effects of mixing intensity and Al/P molar ratio on coagulation for phosphorus removal of synthetic and real wastewater effluent were observed to be similar.
Effects of $H_2O_2$ addition for fenton oxidation on iron coagulation for treatment of phosphorus species, such as orthophosphate, metaphosphate, pyrophosphate, organic phosphate, were investigated. The effects of coagulant dosage, hydrogen peroxide dosage and the combined sequence ferric coagulation and $H_2O_2$ addition for fenton oxidation and coagulation were studied. The characteristics of floc growth rate were monitored using the PDA. The removal efficiencies of phosphorus species by iron coagulation were increased as Fe/P molar ratio increased. However, the removal efficiencies of metaphosphate, pyrophosphate, organic phosphate by a ferric coagulation were not increased as Fe/P molar ratio increased. The removal efficiency of metaphosphate, pyrophosphate, organic phosphate was increased by using iron coagulation and $H_2O_2$ addition for fenton oxidation. The result indicated that non-reactive phosphorus after iron coagulation was changed to reactive phosphorus by $H_2O_2$ addition for fenton oxidation and the oxidized iron enhanced the coagulation efficiencies.
