In this study, the dynamic modeling of floating offshore wind turbine system is reported and the dynamic behavior of the platform for the offshore wind turbine system is analyzed. The modeling of the wind load for a floating offshore wind turbine tower is based on the vertical profile of wind speed. The relative Morison equation is employed to obtain the wave load. ADAMS is used to carry out the dynamic analysis of the floating system that should withstand waves and the wind load. Computer simulations for four types of tension leg platforms are performed, and the simulation results for the platforms are compared with each other.
To maximize power generation and reduce the construction cost of a commercial utility-grade wind turbine, the size of the wind turbine should be large. The initial design of the 12 MW University of Ulsan(UOU) Floating Offshore Wind Turbine(FOWT) was carried out based on the 5 MW National Renewable Energy Laboratory(NREL) offshore wind turbine model. The existing 5 MW NREL offshore wind turbines have been expanded to 12 MW UOU FOWT using the geometric law of similarity and then redesigned for each factor. The resonance of the tower is the most important dynamic responses of a wind turbine, and it should be designed by avoiding resonance due to cyclic load during turbine operations. The natural frequency of the tower needs to avoid being within the frequency range corresponding to the rotational speed of the blades, 1P, and the blade passing frequency, 3P. To avoid resonance, vibration can be reduced by modifying the stiffness or mass. The direct expansion of the 5 MW wind turbine support structure caused a resonance problem with the tower of the 12 MW FOWT and the tower length and diameter was adjusted to avoid a match of the first natural frequency and 3P excitation of the tower.

This paper describes a model test and numerical simulation of a 750-kW-semi-submersible platform wind turbine under several wind and wave conditions for validation of the numerical simulation model. The semi-submersible platform was designed to support the 750-kW-wind turbine class and operate at a water depth of 50 m. The model tests were performed to estimate the performance characteristics of the wind turbine system in the wide tank of the University of Ulsan. Motions and loads of the wind turbine system under the wind and wave conditions were measured and analyzed. The NREL-FAST code was used to simulate the wind turbine system, and the results were compared with those of the test model. The results demonstrate that the numerical simulation captures noticeably the fully coupled floating wind turbine dynamic responses. Also, the model shows a good stability and small responses during waves, wind, and operation of the 750-kW-floating offshore wind turbine.

This paper deals with the analysis of dynamic characteristics of mooring system of floating-type offshore wind turbine. A spar-type floating structure which consists of a nacelle, a tower and the platform excepting blades, is used to model the floating wind turbine and connect three catenary cables to substructure. The motion of floating structure is simulated when the mooring system is attached using irregular wave Pierson-Moskowitz model. The mooring system is analyzed by changing cable position of floating structure. The dynamic behavior characteristics of mooring system are investigated comparing with cable tension and 6-dof motion of floating structure. These characteristics are much useful to initial design of floating-type structure. From the simulation results, the optimized design parameter that is cable position of connect point of mooring cable can be obtained.
An offshore wind turbine supported by a spar buoy floating platform is the subject of this study on tower and rotor extreme loads. The platform, with a 120-meter draft and assumed to be sited in 320 meters of water, supports a 5 MW wind turbine. A baseline model for this turbine developed at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is employed in stochastic response simulations. The support platform, along with the mooring system consisting of three catenary lines, chosen for loads modeling, is based on the "Hywind" floating wind turbine concept. Our interest lies in gaining an understanding of the dynamic coupling between the support platform motion and the turbine loads. We first investigate short-term response statistics using stochastic simulation for a range of different environmental wind and wave conditions. From this study, we identify a few "controlling" environmental conditions for which long-term turbine load statistics and probability distributions are established.

In the initial design stage, the technology for estimating and managing the weight of a floating offshore structure, such as a FPSO (Floating, Production, Storage, and Off-loading unit) and an offshore wind turbine, has a close relationship with the basic performance and the price of the structure. In this study, using the genetic programming (GP), being used a lot in the approximate estimating model and etc., the weight estimation model of the floating offshore structure was studied. For this purpose, various data for estimating the weight of the floating offshore structure were collected through the literature survey, and then the genetic programming method for developing the weight estimation model was studied and implemented. Finally, to examine the applicability of the developed model, it was applied to examples of the weight estimation of a FPSO topsides and an offshore wind turbine. As a result, it was shown that the developed model can be applied the weight estimation process of the floating offshore structure at the early design stage.

The floating offshore wind turbines are usually exposed to the wave and wind excitations which are irregular and undirected. In this paper, the sloshing characteristics of annular cylindrical tank were experimentally investigated to reduce the structural dynamic motion of floating offshore wind turbine which is robust to the irregular change of excitation direction of wind and wave. The formula for the natural sloshing frequencies of this annular cylindrical tank was derived theoretically. In order to validate this formula, the shaking equipment was established and frequency response functions were measured. Two types of tank were considered. The first and second natural sloshing frequencies were investigated according to the depth of the water. It has been observed that between theoretical and experimental results shows a good agreement.

This paper presents effect of aerodynamic loads on mooring line responses of a floating offshore wind turbine. A Matlab code based on blade element momentum (BEM) theory is developed to consider aerodynamic loads acting on NREL 5MW wind turbine. The aerodynamic loads are coupled with time-domain hydrodynamic analyses using one-way interaction scheme of the wave and wind loads. A semi-submersible floating platform which is from Offshore Code Comparison Collaborative Continuation(OC4) DeepCWind platform is used with catenary mooring lines simply composed of studless chain links. Average values of mooring peak tensions obtained from aerodynamic load consideration are significantly increased compared to those from simple wind drag force consideration. Consideration of aerodynamic loads also yield larger tension ranges which can be important factor to reduce fatigue life of the mooring lines.

In this study, research and empirical cases of floating offshore wind turbine systems with a tension-leg platform are investigated, and hydrodynamic and structural characteristics according to platform shapes and characteristics during transportation and installation are confirmed. Most platforms are composed of pontoons or corner columns, and these are mainly located below the waterline to minimize the impact of breaking waves and supplement the lack of buoyancy of the center column. These pontoons and corner columns are designed with a simple shape to reduce manufacturing and assembly costs, and some platforms additionally have reinforcements such as braces to improve structural strength. Most of the systems are assembled in the yard and then moved by tugboat and installed, and some platforms have been developed with a dedicated barge for simultaneous assembly, transportation and installation. In this study, we intend to secure the basic data necessary for the design, transportation, and installation procedures of floating offshore wind turbine systems with a tension-leg platform.

The main objective of this study was to establish design guidelines for three key design variables (spar thickness, spar diameter, and total draft) by examining their impact on the stress distribution and resonant frequency of a 2.5-MW spar-type floating offshore wind turbine substructure under extreme marine conditions, such as during Typhoon Bolaven. The current findings revealed that the substructure experienced maximum stress at wave frequencies of either 0.199 Hz or 0.294 Hz, consistent with previously reported experimental findings. These results indicated that the novel simulation method proposed in this study, which simultaneously combines hydrodynamic diffraction analysis, computational dynamics analysis, and structural analysis, was successfully validated. It also demonstrated that our proposed simulation method precisely quantified the stress distribution of the substructure. The novel findings, which reveal that the maximum stress of the substructure increases with an increase in total draft and a decrease in spar thickness and spar diameter, offer valuable insights for optimizing the design of spar-type floating offshore wind turbine substructures operating in various harsh marine environments.
