  • In recently designed diesel engines, the running conditions for piston pin bearings have become very severe due to combustion pressure and temperature increase. Moreover, the lead removal from the bush material has strongly reduced the capability of the anti friction material to accept asperity contacts. In this paper, before trying to find the pressure distributions on the oil film of piston pin bearings by the unsteady two dimensional thermohydrodynamic lubrication analysis in order to do the optimum design of the bearings of piston pin, it will be investigated the tendancy of piston pin rotating motion by calculating the friction coefficient at piston pin bearings, the oil film thickness and the frictional torques induced by hydrodynamic shear stress.

  • This Paper presents a novel piston friction force measurement system that has characteristics of relieving the Pressure force acting on the upper surface of the liner; the system uses general rubber O-rings for combustion chamber sealing, and does not need special changes to the piston top land. The lower supporter of the floating liner increases stiffness in liner axial direction, and results in the increase of natural frequency. The upper supporter has multi-layer structure designed fer low axial stiffness and high radial stiffness. With the use of the present system, the effects of variation in clearance and piston ring tension were studied.

  • In recently designed diesel engines, the running conditions for piston-pin bearings have become severe because of the higher combustion pressure and increased temperature. Moreover, the metal removal from the bushing material has strongly reduced the ability of the antifriction material to accept asperity contacts. Therefore, it is necessary to find ways of reducing wear scar on the connecting-rod small-end bushing and piston-pin boss bearing related to the higher combustion pressure on the power cell of an engine. In this work, the position and level of material removal from the surfaces of the bushing and bearing under such severe operating conditions - for example, maximum power and torque conditions of a passenger car diesel engine - are estimated for several combinations of surface roughness. First, piston-pin rotating motion is investigated by calculating the friction coefficient at piston-pin bearings, the oil film thickness, and the frictional torques induced by hydrodynamic shear stress. Subsequently, the wear scarring on the surfaces of a connecting-rod small-end bushing and two piston-pin boss bearings related to piston-pin rotational motion is numerically calculated under the maximum power and torque operating conditions. This work is helpful to determine the reasonable surface roughness of the bushing and bearing for reducing wear volume occurring at the interface between a bearing and a shaft.

  • This research describes the development model and testing of a hybrid damper which can be applicable to a vehicle suspension. The hybrid damper is devised to improve the performance of a conventional passive oil damper using a magneto-rheological (MR) accumulator which consists of a gas accumulator and a MR device. The level of damping is continuously variable by the means of control in the applied current in a MR device fitted to a floating piston which separates the gas and the oil chamber. A simple MR device is used to resist the movement of floating piston. At first a mathematical model which describes all flows within the conventional oil damper is formulated, and then a small MR device is also devised and adopted to a mathematical model to characterize the performance of the device.

  • A two-dimensional floating body with a moon pool under forced heave motion, including a piston mode, is numerically simulated. A dynamic CFD simulation is carried out to thoroughly investigate the flow field around a two-dimensional moon pool over various heaving frequencies. The numerical results are compared with experimental results and a linear potential program by Faltinsen et al. (2007). The effects of vortex shedding and viscosity are investigated by changing the corner shapes of the floating body and solving the Euler equation, respectively. The flow fields, including the velocity, vorticity, and pressure fields, are discussed to understand and determine the mechanisms of wave elevation, damping, and sway force.

  • Offshore floating structures have so-called moonpool in the centre area for the purpose of drilling, installation of subsea structures, recovery of Remotely-Operated Vehicle (ROV) and divers. However, this vertical opening has an effect on the operating performance of floating offshore structure in the vicinity of moonpool resonance frequency; piston mode and sloshing mode. Experimental study based on model test was carried out. Moonpool resonance of floating offshore structure on fixed condition and motion free condition were investigated. And, the effect of cofferdam which is representative inner structure inside moonpool was examined. Model test results showed that Molin's theoretical formula can predict moonpool resonance on fixed condition quite accurately. However, motion free condition has higher resonance frequency when it is compared with that of motion fixed. The installation of cofferdam moves resonance frequency to higher region and also generates secondary resonance at lower frequency. Furthermore, it was found that cofferdam was the cause of generating waves in the longitudinal direction when the vessel was in beam sea.

  • In this study, the pressure distributions on the oil film of piston pin bearings are found by two-dimensional lubrication analysis in order to help the optimum design of the bearings of piston pin. The lubrication analysis is carried out together with an equation related with the oil pressure-viscosity index. The oil film pressure distribution is used as an input data for pressure boundary conditions at the piston pin-boss surface. Finally, the piston pin-boss stress distribution coupled with the thermal stress is calculated, and then compared with the results of the stress analysis which is not counted with the oil film pressure boundary condition.

  • A friction force measurement system using the floating liner method was developed to study the frictional behavior of piston rings. The measurement system was carefully designed to control the effect of the piston secondary motion and the temperature of cylinder wall and oil. The friction force between the barrel shaped piston ring and the cylinder liner, was measured under the condition of flooded oil supply. The measured friction forces were classified into five frictional modes with regard to the combination of predominant lubrication regimes(boundary, mixed and hydrodynamic lubrication) and stroke regions(midstroke and dead centers). The modes could be identified on the Stribeck diagram of the friction coefficients and the dimensionless number of ㎼/p, where the friction coefficients are evaluated at near the midstroke and dead centers.
