An avoidance/guidance problem of an aircraft against moving obstacle is considered in two dimensional space. The aircraft is modelled as a point mass flying with constant speed. The lateral acceleration is assumed the control input. Artificial potential functions are applied to the terminal point and moving obstacles in order that repulsive forces and an attractive force are produced by the obstacles and the terminal point respectively. A real time guidance/avoidance law is proposed by using the potential forces and relative velocity. The guidance law for a logarithm potential function results the well-known proportional navigation law. The avoidance control command is inverse proportional to the time-to-go to the obstacle and turns the aircraft toward the negative direction of the line-of-sight change. The performance of the proposed guidance/avoidance law is verified with simulations.

This paper proposes a new algorithm for ultrasonic sensors arranged on ring frame to identify obstacles surrounding itself by TOFs (time of flight). The ring frame has multiple channels consisting of a transmitter and a receiver. When the transmitter of a selected channel transmits ultrasonic signal, the TOFs of reflected signals from obstacles are acquired by the receiver of the channel. The process continues for all channels consecutively. Then, by using parabolic curve fitting of TOFs of all channel, the proposed algorithm not only calculates distances from multiple obstacles, but also identifies if the shape of obstacles are point or plane by the coefficients of the curve. By the experiment using 16 ultrasonic transceivers on the ring frame in the environment of two poles and two planes, we show the feasibility of the proposed scheme.

To minimize the occurrence of aviation accidents in the post-COVID, continuous flight training is crucial. However, the current infrastructure of domestic airports and airfields is insufficient to prepare for and respond to accidents, and there is a need for sufficient facility capacity. Therefore, this study examines the construction of a regional airport to minimize aviation accidents and selects factors necessary for determining the site location. Among the 11 selected factors, six were considered the most important site selection factors, including noise issues, weather conditions, obstacle limitations, environmental issues, airspace conditions, and facility usability. Applying these factors, an analysis was conducted on the Songpo area of Sacheon City, Gyeongsangnam-do. Based on a comprehensive review, it can be concluded that the Songpo area is a suitable choice for a regional airport due to its excellent transportation environment, consideration of noise and environmental issues with the residential population, and other factors. Furthermore, the development of the aviation industry is expected to bring about an increase in tourism and economic benefits, and it is anticipated to make a significant contribution to the domestic aviation industry along with the construction of the currently under-construction Ulleung Airport.
In most countries, instrument flight procedures are designed by applying one of the following standards: the International Aviation Organization's DOC 8168, Air Navigation Services and Operation Procedures (PANS-OPS), or the US Federal Aviation Administration's TERPS, Terminal Procedures. In particular, the circling approach procedure has many differences between the two standards, and the US terminal procedure (TERPS) has become more complicated since 2013 by applying expanded standards depending on altitude. The circling approach procedures are more risky than straight-in approach procedures because it involves maneuvering the aircraft close to the ground at low energy for landing. In order to accurately understand these differences, this study provides to distinguish by what criteria the circling approach procedure is designed according to individual domestic airports in Korea, to calculate the radius for the range of circling approach areas that guarantee minimum obstacle avoidance during circling approach maneuvers, and to present methods for performing safe circling approach procedures.

Automated mission planning for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is difficult because of the propagation of several sources of error into the solution, as for any large scale autonomous system. To ensure reliable system performance, we quantify all sources of error and their propagation through a mission planner for operation of UAVs in an obstacle rich environment we developed in prior work. In this sequel to that work, we show that the mission planner developed before can be made robust to errors arising from the mapping, sensing, actuation, and environmental disturbances through creating systematic buffers around obstacles using the calculations of uncertainty propagation. This robustness makes the mission planner truly autonomous and scalable to many UAVs without human intervention. We illustrate with simulation results for trajectory generation of multiple UAVs in a surveillance problem in an urban environment while optimizing for either maximal flight time or minimal fuel consumption. Our solution methods are suitable for any well-mapped region, and the final collision free paths are obtained through offline sub-optimal solution of an mTSP (multiple traveling salesman problem).
When a mobile robot moves around autonomously without man-made landmarks, it is essential to recognize the placement of surrounding objects especially for current position estimation, obstacle avoidance, or homing into the work station. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to recognize the floor paln for indoor mobile robot navigation using ultrasonic time-of-flight method. We model the floor plan as a collection of polygonal plane objects and recognize the floor plan by locating edges and vertices of the objects. The direction is estimated by the patterns of transmission beam and reception sensitivity of the ultrasonic transducer, and the distance is estimated by the correlation detection method. We show the validity of the proposed approach through experimental results and discuss the resolution and the accuracy of the estimation of direction and distance.
As sensors such as Inertial Measurement Unit, cameras, and Light Detection and Rangings have become cheaper and smaller, research has been actively conducted to implement functions automating micro aerial vehicles such as multirotor type drones. This would fully enable the autonomous flight of drones in the real world without human intervention. In this article, we present a survey of state-of-the-art development on autonomous drones. To build an autonomous drone, the essential components can be classified into pose estimation, environmental perception, and obstacle-free trajectory generation. To describe the trend, we selected three leading research groups-University of Pennsylvania, ETH Zurich, and Carnegie Mellon University-which have demonstrated impressive experiment results on automating drones using their estimation, perception, and trajectory generation techniques. For each group, we summarize the core of their algorithm and describe how they implemented those in such small-sized drones. Finally, we present our up to date research status on developing an autonomous drone.
The increasing popularity of autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be attributed to their wide range of applications. 3D path planning is one of the crucial components enabling autonomous flight. In this paper, we present a novel 3D path planning algorithm that generates and utilizes curvature-based trajectories. Our approach leverages circular properties, offering notable advantages. First, circular trajectories make collision detection easier. Second, the planning procedure is streamlined by eliminating the need for the spline process to generate dynamically feasible trajectories. To validate our proposed algorithm, we conducted simulations in Gazebo Simulator. Within the simulation, we placed various obstacles such as pillars, nets, trees, and walls. The results demonstrate the efficacy and potential of our proposed algorithm in facilitating efficient and reliable 3D path planning for UAVs.
Recent advancements in autonomous flight technologies for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have greatly expanded their applicability for various tasks, including delivery, agriculture, and rescue. This article presents a comprehensive survey of path planning techniques in autonomous navigation and exploration that are tailored for UAVs. The robotics literature has studied path and motion planning, from basic obstacle avoidance to sophisticated algorithms capable of dynamic decision-making in challenging environments. In this article, we introduce popular path and motion planning approaches such as grid-based, sampling-based, and optimization-based planners. We further describe the contributions from the state-of-the-art in exploration planning for UAVs, which have been derived from these well-studied planners. Recent research, including the method we are developing, has improved performance in terms of efficiency and scalability for exploration tasks in challenging environments without human intervention. On the basis of these research and development trends, this article discusses future directions in UAV path planning technologies, illustrating the potential for UAVs to perform complex tasks with increased autonomy and efficiency.
