SiC-TiC composites have been fabricated by using a mechanochemical processing of a mixture of Si, Ti, and C at room temperature and subsequent hot pressing. TiC powders have been obtained by the mechanochemical processing of a mixture of Ti and C whereas SiC powders has not been obtained from a mixture of Si and C. By using the exothermic reaction between Ti and C, SiC-TiC powder could be obtained from the mixture of Si, Ti, and C using the mechanochemical processing for more than 12h. The X-ray diffraction analysis has shown that the powder subjected to the mechanochemical processing consisted of the particles having crystallite size below 10nm. Fully densified SiC-TiC composites have been obtained by hot-pressing of the powder at 1850$\^{C}$ for 3h and it has shown comparable mechanical properties to those of the SiC-TiC composites prepared from the commercially available SiC and TiC powders. Flexural strength of 560 MPa and fracture toughness of 4.8 MP$.$am$\_$1/2/ have been shown for the SiC-TiC composites with composition corresponding to 0.75:0.25:1 mole ratio of Si:Ti:C.
Three points bending flexural test was modeled numerically to study the crack propagation in the pre-cracked beams. The pre-existing edge cracks in the beam models were considered to investigate the crack propagation and coalescence paths within the modeled samples. The effects of particle size on the single edge-notched round bar in bending test were considered too. The results show that Failure pattern is constant by increasing the ball diameter. Tensile cracks are dominant mode of failure. These crack initiates from notch tip, propagate parallel to loading axis and coalescence with upper model boundary. Number of cracks increase by decreasing the ball diameter. Also, tensile fracture toughness was decreased with increasing the particle size. In the present study, the influences of particles sizes on the cracks propagations and coalescences in the brittle materials such as rocks and concretes are numerically analyzed by using a three dimensional particle flow code (PFC3D). These analyses improve the understanding of the stability of rocks and concretes structures such as rock slopes, tunnel constructions and underground openings.
The impacts of reinforcing concrete matrix with steel fibers, polypropylene fibers and recycled plastic fibers using different volume fractions of 0.15%, 0.5%, 1.5% and 2.5% on the compressive and tensile characteristics are experimentally investigated in the current research. Also, flexural behavior of plain concrete (PC) beams, shear performance of reinforced concrete (RC) beams and compressive characteristics of both PC and RC columns reinforced with recycled plastic fibers were studied. The experimental results showed that the steel fibers improved the splitting tensile strength of concrete higher than both the polypropylene fibers and recycled plastic fibers. The end-hooked steel fibers had a positive effect on the compressive strength of concrete while, the polypropylene fibers, the recycled plastic fibers and the rounded steel fibers had a negative impact. Compressive strength of end-hooked steel fiber specimen with volume fraction of 2.5% exhibited the highest value among all tested samples of 32.48 MPa, 21.83% higher than the control specimen. The ultimate load, stiffness, ductility and failure patterns of PC and RC beams in addition to PC and RC columns strengthened with recycled plastic fibers enhanced remarkably compared to non-strengthened elements. The maximum ultimate load and stiffness of RC column reinforced with recycled plastic fibers with 1.5% volume fraction improved by 21 and 15%, respectively compared to non-reinforced RC column.
The mechanical and phase transformation of the cold isostatically pressed $\alpha$-SiC ceramic were investigated as a function of the sintering temperature. The result of phase analysis by XRD revealed 6H, 4H, 3C and phase transformation between 6H and 4H showed a sudden change over 200$0^{\circ}C$. However, the alongrightarrow$\beta$ reverse transformation did not occur to any sintering temperature. The relative density and the mechanical properties of $\alpha$-SiC ceramic was increased with increased sintering temperature. The flexural strength rapidly inclosed below 210$0^{\circ}C$ and showed the highest value of 410 MPa at 220$0^{\circ}C$. This reason is because crack was propagated through surface flaw. The fracture toughness showed the highest value of 3.3 MPa.m$_{1}$2/ at 220$0^{\circ}C$.
Hydroxyapatite $(HAp,\;Ca_{10}(PO_4)_6(OH)_2)$/alumina composites were fabricated with the addition of fluorides, such as $MgF_2$ and $CaF_2$. In this study, the effect of fluorides on the inhibition of phase decomposition and the mechanical properties of HAp was investigated. Due to the higher solubility of F ion in HAp structure, $MgF_2$ additive was more effective compared to $CaF_2$ additive in the lowering decomposition temperature of HAp. Therefore, the dissociation tendency of HAp was fully inhibited below $1400^{\circ}C$. The mechanical properties of HAp composites with $MgF_2$ additive showed higher value (flexural strength: $\~170MPa$, Vickers hardness: $\~7\;GPa$, fracture toughness: $\~1.5\;MPam^{1/2}$) compared to $MgF_2-free$ composites. The linear thermal expansion coefficient of HAp composites with $MgF_2$ showed the value of $16.4\times10^{-6}/^{\circ}C\;at\;20\~400^{\circ}C $.
The $\beta$-SiC + $ZrB_2$ ceramic electroconductive composites were pressureless-sintered and annealed by adding 12wt% $Al_2O_3$ + $Y_2O_3$ (6 : 4wt%) powder as a function of sintering temperature. The relative density showed the highest value of 81.1% at 1900$^{\circ}C$ sintering temperature. The phase analysis of the composites by XRD revealed of $\alpha$-SiC(6H), $TiB_2$, $Al_5Y_2O_{12}$ and $\beta$-SiC(15R). Flexural strength showed the highest value of 230 MPa for composites sintered at 1900$^{\circ}C$. The vicker's hardness and the fracture toughness showed the highest value of increased with increasing sintering temperature and showed the highest of 9.88 GPa and 6.05 $MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ at 1900$^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistivity was measured by the Pauw method from 25$^{\circ}C$ to 700$^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistivity of the composites showed the PTCR (Positive Temperature Coefficient Resistivity).

Si3N4-TiC composites have been known as electrically conductive ceramics. $Si_3N_4-TiC$ composites with 2 wt% $Al_2O_3$ and 4 wt% $Y_2O_3$ were hot pressed in $N_2$ environment. The mechanical properties including hardness, fracture toughness, and flexural strength and tribological properties were investigated as a function of TiC content. $Si_3N_4-40$ vol% TiC composite was hot pressed at $1,750^{\circ}C$, $1,800^{\circ}C$, and $1,850^{\circ}C$ for 1, 3 and 5 hours in $N_2$ gas. Mechanical and tribolgical properties depended on microstructures, which were controlled by hte TiC content, hot press temperature, and hot press holding time. However, mechanical properties and tribological behaviors were degraded by the chemical reaction between TiC and N. The chemically reacted products such as TiCN, SiC, and $SiO_2$ were detered by the X-ray diffraction analysis.
$HfB_2$-HfC composites were prepared by reactive hot pressing using Hf and $B_4C$ at temperatures of 1800 and $1900^{\circ}C$ for 60 min under 32 MPa in an Ar atmosphere. The reaction sequences of the $HfB_2$-HfC composite were studied through series of pressureless heat treatments ranging from 800 to $1600^{\circ}C$. The effect of size reduction of the starting powders on densification was investigated by vibration milling. Fully dense $HfB_2$-HfC composites were obtained by size reduction of the starting powders via vibration milling. The oxidation behaviour of the $HfB_2$-HfC composites at $1500^{\circ}C$ in air showed formation of a non-protective $HfO_2$ scale with linear mass gain. Examination of the mechanical properties showed that particle size reduction via vibration milling also led to improved flexural strength, hardness and fracture toughness.
The ${\beta}-SiC+TiB_2$ ceramic electroconductive composites were pressureless-sintered and annealed by adding 12wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$(6 : 4wt%) powder as a function of sintering temperature. The relative density is over 78.83% of the theoretical density and increased with increasing sintering temperature. The phase analysis of the composites by XRD revealed of $\alpha$-SiC(6H), $TiB_2$, $Al_5Y_2O_{12}$ and $\beta$-SiC(15R). Flexural strength showed the highest of 140 MPa for composites sintered at $1900^{\circ}C$. The vicker's hardness increased with increasing sintering temperature and showed the highest of 4.07 GPa at $1900^{\circ}C$. Owing to YAG, the fracture toughness showed the highest of 4.07 $MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ for composites at $1900^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistivity was measured by the Pauw method from $25^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistivity of the composites showed the PTCR(Positive Temperature Coefficient Resistivity).
