  • The effect of basalt and polypropylene fibers on the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams is investigated in this paper. The compressive and tensile behaviors of the basalt concrete and polypropylene concrete cylinders are also investigated. Eight beams and 28 cylinders were made with different percentages of basalt and polypropylene fibers. The dosages of fiber were selected as 0.6%, 1.3%, and 2.5% of the total cement weight. Each type of fiber was mixed solely with the concrete mix. Basalt and polypropylene fibers are modern and cheap materials that can be used to improve the structural behavior of RC members. This research is designed to find the optimum percentage of basalt and polypropylene fibers for enhancing the flexural behavior of RC beams. Test results showed that the addition of basalt and polypropylene fibers in any dosage (0.6%, 1.3%, and 2.5%) can increase the flexural strength and displacement ductility index of the beams where the maximum enhancement was measured with 1.3% fibers. The maximum increments in the flexural strength and the displacement ductility index were 30.39% and 260% for the basalt fiber case, while the maximum improvement for the polypropylene fibers case was 55.5% and 230% compared to the control specimen. Finite element (FE) models were then developed in ABAQUS to predict the numerical behaviour of the tested beams. The FE models were able to predict the experimental behaviour with reasonable accuracy. This research confirms the efficiency of basalt and polypropylene fibers in enhancing the flexural behavior of RC beams, and it also suggests the optimum dosage of fibers.

  • This paper presents experimental research work for the evaluation of ultimate flexural behaviors of prestressed concrete beams with a corroded tendon. In order to evaluate the effects of loss of prestress or loss of tendon area on the ultimate flexural strength of prestressed concrete beams, static load tests are conducted using five prestressed concrete beams. After exposing prestressing tendons in two test beams using 25mm drill bit, the exposed tendons were corroded using an accelerating corrosion equipment to simulate loss of tendon area. During the tests, steel strains, concrete strains and displacements at the center of test beams were measured, and acoustic emission measurements were conducted to detect wire fractures. Based on the test results, evaluation method for predicting flexural strength of prestressed concrete beams with corroded tendons is investigated. In addition, evaluation methods for predicting the existence of corroded tendons in post-tensioned prestressed concrete beams at service loads are discussed.

  • A spiral steel pipe has been more used widely as a structural member as well as transport pipeline because the pipe can be manufactured continuously, consequently more economical than the conventional UOE pipe. As improved pipe manufacture technology makes spiral pipes to have high strength and to have larger diameters, the spiral pipes have been recently used as long distance transport pipeline with a large diameter and strain-based design is thus required to keep structural integrity and cost effectiveness of the spiral pipe. However, design codes of spiral pipe have not been completely established yet, and structural behaviors of a spiral pipe are not clearly understood for strain-based design. In this paper, the effects of residual stresses due to the spiral pipe manufacture process are investigated on the flexural behavior of the spiral pipe. Finite element analyses were conducted to estimate residual stresses due to the manufacturing process for the pipes which have different forming angle, thickness, and strength, respectively. After that, the results were used as initial conditions for flexural analysis of the pipe to numerically investigate its flexural behaviors.

  • Steel fiber composite bar (SFCB) is a novel type of reinforcement, which has good ductility and durability performance. Due to the unique pseudo strain hardening tensile behavior of SFCB, different flexural behavior is expected of SFCB reinforced concrete (SFCB-RC) beams from traditional steel bar reinforced concrete (S-RC) beams and FRP bar reinforced concrete (F-RC) beams. To investigate the flexural behavior of SFCB-RC beam, four points bending tests were carried out and different flexural behaviors between S/F/SFCB-RC beams were discussed. An flexural analytical model of SFCB-RC beams is proposed and proved by the current and existing experimental results. Based on the proposed model, the influence of the fiber volume ratio R of the SFCB on the flexural behavior of SFCB-RC beams is discussed. The results show that the proposed model is effective for all S/F/SFCB-RC flexural members. Fiber volume ratio R is a key parameter affecting the flexural behavior of SFCB-RC. By controlling the fiber volume ratio of SFCB reinforcements, the flexural behavior of the SFCB-RC flexural members such as bearing capacity, bending stiffness, ductility and repairability of SFCB-RC structures can be designed.

  • Most widened bridges have been constructed by the joining-construction method that makes new and existing bridges structurally a single structure. Since the joining-construction method has several problems in design and construction viewpoint, this study is conducted in order to investigate the structural behaviors of RC slabs, which are widened and influenced by traffic-induced vibration of existing bridge during placing and curing of new concrete, with the prototype flexural strength test and FEM analysis. It was found that cracks are generated in construction joint at low applied load and that stress concentration at the joints and slips between steel bar and concrete are occured. But, the decreasing of load carrying capacity is negligible according to the traffic-induced vibration as well as the difference of construction method.

  • In SPS system, steel beams are used as not only temporary struts supporting the wale but main flexural members of building. Previous experimental works show that RC wale-steel beam joints have some flexural rigidity. In this paper, nonlinear analysis is performed using DRAIN-2DX program to investigate the behaviors of the underground composite frames constructed with SPS system when the rigidity of RC wale-steel beam joints change. Analysis variables are the procedure of construction, magnitude of lateral forces, and flexural rigidity of the RC wale-steel beam joint with stud connector. Analysis results show the effects of joint rigidity for the yielding process of frame and the moment and deflection at the mid-span of beam.

  • Recently the repair of damaged reinforced concrete members by the external bonding of fiber-reinforced polymer laminates has received considerable attention. This paper investigates the flexural behaviors of beam strengthened with Aramid fiber sheets(AFS), and attempts to evaluate the flexural strength of such RC beams by the use of nonlinear flexural analysis because the application of the KCI strength method to strengthened beam is somewhat limited and the failure strain of AFS is overestimated in particular cases.

  • In this paper we present tile results of an experimental investigation on the physical and mechanical properties of carbon fiber grid, polymer mortar, and carbon fiber grid reinforced plain concrete flexural members. In order to repairing and reinforcing damaged and/or deteriorated existing concrete structural members, new materials have been developed and utilized in the construction industries. But the physical and mechanical behaviors of the material are not well understood. To use the material effectively various aspects of the material must be throughly investigated analytically as well as experimentally. In this investigation we found the physical and mechanical properties of carbon fiber grid and polymer mortar which are directly utilized in the repair and reinforcement design of damaged or deteriorated concrete structures. In addition, we also investigate the strengthening effect of carbon fiber grid on the plain concrete flexural test specimens. It was found that the material can be used to repair and strengthen the concrete structures effectively.

  • In this work. a potential inexpensive epoxy resin. epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) was synthesized and applied as a toughening agent for 4.4'-tetradiglycidyl diaminodiphenyl methane (TGDDM). The chemical structure of ESO was characterized by FT-IR, $^1H NMR, and ^{13}C NMR$ spectroscopy. The curing behaviors. thermal stabilities. fracture toughness. and flexural strength of TGDDM/ESO blend systems were investigated by using the dynamic DSC. thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). and flexural tests. The thermal stabilities of TGDDM/ESO blend systems were decreased with increasing ESO contents. whereas the critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$) and flexural strength ($\sigma_f$) were increased with ESO contents up to 10 wt% ESO.
