Starting with Hamilton's variational principle, the governing field equations for the steady state response of thin-walled beams under harmonic forces are derived. The formulation captures shear deformation effects due to bending and warping, translational and rotary inertia effects and as well as torsional flexural coupling effects due to the cross section mono-symmetry. The equations of motion consist of four coupled differential equations in the unknown displacement field variables. A general closed form solution is then developed for the coupled system of equations. The solution is subsequently used to develop a family of shape functions which exactly satisfy the homogeneous form of the governing field equations. A super-convergent finite element is then formulated based on the exact shape functions. Key features of the element developed include its ability to (a) isolate the steady state response component of the response to make the solution amenable to fatigue design, (b) capture coupling effects arising as a result of section mono-symmetry, (c) eliminate spatial discretization arising in commonly used finite elements, (d) avoiding shear locking phenomena, and (e) eliminate the need for time discretization. The results based on the present solution are found to be in excellent agreement with those based on finite element solutions at a small fraction of the computational and modelling cost involved.
This study experimentally investigates the flexural behavior of steel-UHPC composite slabs composed of an innovative negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) steel plate and Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) slab connected via demountable high-strength bolt shear connectors. Eight demountable composite slab specimens were fabricated and tested under traditional four-point bending method. The effects of loading histories (positive and negative bending moment), types of steel plate (NPR steel plate and Q355 steel plate) and spacings of high-strength bolts (150 mm, 200 mm and 250 mm) on the flexural behavior of demountable composite slab, including failure mode, load-deflection curve, interface relative slip, crack width and sectional strain distribution, were evaluated. The results revealed that under positive bending moment, the failure mode of composite slabs employing NPR steel plate was distinct from that with Q355 steel plate, which exhibited that part of high-strength bolts was cut off, part of pre-embedded padded extension nuts was pulled out, and UHPC collapsed due to instantaneous instability and etc. Besides, under the same spacing of high-strength bolts, NPR steel plate availably delayed and restrained the relative slip between steel plate and UHPC plate, thus significantly enhanced the cooperative deformation capacity, flexural stiffness and load capacity for composite slabs further. While under negative bending moment, NPR steel plate effectively improved the flexural capacity and deformation characteristics of composite slabs, but it has no obvious effect on the initial flexural stiffness of composite slabs. Meanwhile, the excellent crack-width control ability for UHPC endowed composite members with better durability. Furthermore, according to the sectional strain distribution analysis, due to the negative Poisson's ratio effect and high yield strength of NPR steel plate, the tensile strain between NPR steel plate and UHPC layer held strain compatibility during the whole loading process, and the magnitude of upward movement for sectional plastic neutral axis could be ignored with the increase of positive bending moment.

This paper examines the behaviour of two types of practical open beam-to-tubular column connection details subjected to combined moment, axial and/or shear loads. Detailed continuum finite element models are developed and validated against available experimental results, and extended to deal with flexural, axial and shear load interactions. A numerical investigation is then carried out on the behaviour of selected connections with different stiffness and strength characteristics under various load combination scenarios. The influence of applied levels of axial tensile or compressive loads on the bending stiffness and capacity is examined and discussed. Additionally, the interaction effects between shear forces and co-existing bending and axial loads are examined and shown to be comparatively insignificant in terms of stiffness and capacity in most cases. It is also shown that the range of connections considered in this paper can provide rotational ductility levels in excess of those required under typical design scenarios. Based on these findings, a simplified component-based representation is proposed and described, and its ability to represent the connection response under combined loading is verified using results from detailed numerical simulations.

Self-consolidating concrete (SCC) is a stable and cohesive high consistency concrete mix with enhanced filling ability properties that reduce the need for mechanical compaction. Limited standards and specifications have been reported in the literature on the structural behavior of reinforced self-compacting concrete elements. The significance of the research presented in this paper stems from the need to investigate the effect of enhanced fluidity of SCC on the structural behavior of high strength self-consolidating reinforced concrete beams. To meet the objectives of this research, twelve reinforced concrete beams were prepared with two different generations of superplasticizers and designed to exhibit flexure, shear, or bond splitting failure. The compared beams were identical except for the type of superplasticizer being used (second generation sulphonated-based superplasticizer or third generation polycarboxylate-based superplasticizer). The outcomes of the experimental work revealed comparable resistance of beam specimens made with self-compacting (SCC) and conventional vibrated concrete (VC). The dissimilarities in the experimental values between the SCC and the control VC beams were not major, leading to the conclusion that the high flowability of SCC has little effect on the flexural, shear and bond strengths of concrete members.

Structural properties of reinforced concrete, such as bond and shear strength, that depend on the tensile properties of concrete are much lower for high-strength concrete than would be expected based on relationships developed for normal-strength concretes. To determine the reason for this behavior, studies at the University of Kansas have addressed the effects of aggregate type, water-cementitious material ratio, and age on the mechanical and fracture properties of normal and high-strength concretes. The relationships between compressive strength, flexural strength, and fracture properties were studied. At the time of test, concrete ranged in age from 5 to 180 days. Water-cementitious material ratios ranged from 0.24 to 0.50, producing compressive strengths between 20 MPa(2, 920 psi) and 99 MPa(14, 320psi). Mixes contained either basalt or crushed limestone aggregate, with maximum sizes of 12mm(1/2in). or 19mm(3/4in). The tests demonstrate that the higher quality basalt coarse aggregate provides higher strengths in compression than limestone only for the high-strength concrete, but measurably higher strengths in flexure, and significantly higher fracture energies than the limestone coarse aggregate at all water-cementitious material ratios and ages. Compressive strength, water-cementitious material ratio, and age have no apparent relationship with fracture energy, which is principally governed by coarse aggregate properties. The peak bending stress in the fracture test is linearly related to flexural strength. Overall, as concrete strength increases, the amount of energy stored in the material at the peak tensile load increases, but the ability of the material to dissipate energy remains nearly constant. This suggests that, as higher strength cementitious materials are placed in service, the probability of nonductile failures will measurably increase. Both research and educational effort will be needed to develop strategies to limit the probability of brittle failures and inform the design community of the nature of the problems associated with high-strength concrete.
Properties of AFS vary with the changes in the face-sheet materials. Hence, the performance of AFS can be optimized by selecting face-sheet materials. In this work, three types of face-sheet materials representing elastic-perfectly plastic, elastic-plastic strain hardening and purely elastic materials were employed to study their effects on the flexural behavior and failure mechanism of AFS systematically. Result showed face-sheet materials affected the failure mechanism and energy absorption ability of AFS significantly. When the foam cores were sandwiched by aluminum alloy 6061, the AFS failed by face-sheet yielding and crack without collapse of the foam core, there was no clear plastic platform in the Load-Displacement curve. When the foam cores were sandwiched by stainless steel 304 and carbon fiber fabric, there were no face-sheet crack and the sandwich structure failed by core shear and collapse, plastic platform appeared. Energy absorption abilities of steel and carbon fiber reinforced AFS were much higher than aluminum alloy reinforced one. Carbon fiber was suggested as the best choice for AFS for its light weight and high performance. The versus strength ratio of face sheet to core was suggested to be a significant value for AFS structure design which may determine the failure mechanism of a certain AFS structure.
In this studies, Dapped End Beams(DEB) having disturbed regions were designed by using strut tie model, and the main purpose of this paper is that whether T-headed bars and Steel fibers will be present or not. The ability of DEB with T-headed bars have a superior performance rather than others, such as improved ductility, larger energy adsorption and enhanced post-peak load carrying capability. The capacity of DEB with steel fibers also show increase of ductility, shear strength, fatigue strength and crack. Each DEB with both headed bars and steel fibers, headed bars, and steel fibers as a substitute reinforced steel in the disturbed regions and a DEB with only stirrup and tie reinforced steel were comparable. In contrast, the headed bar stirrups, the tie headed bars and the reinforced steel fibers did not lose their anchorage and hence were able to develop strain hardening and also served to delay buckling of the flexural compression steel. Excellent load-deflection predictions were obtained by increasing the tension stiffening effect to account for high load effects.

In a companion paper, tests on bolted side plated beams have shown that side plates can substantially increase the strength of existing reinforced concrete beams with little if any loss of ductility and, furthermore, induce a gradual mode of failure after commencement of concrete crushing. However, it was also shown that transverse interaction between the side plates and the reinforced concrete beam, that is vertical slip and which is a concept unique to side plated beams, is detrimental. Transverse interaction increases the forces on the bolt shear connectors and, hence, weakens the beam. It also reduces the ability of the composite plated beam to yield and, hence, to attain its full flexural capacity. The generic concept of transverse interaction will be described in this paper and the results used to develop a new form of rigid plastic analysis for bolted side plated beams which is illustrated with an application.
