Electromyographic analysis was made in the forearm to clarify the prime mover of the wrist joint in flexion and extension. Loads of 5 and 10 pounds were given to the hand during isometric and isotonic contraction. The results of this study were summarized as follows: 1) M. flexor carpi ulnaris and m. extensor carpi radialis acted as the prime mover during flexion and extension, respectively, of the wrist joint. 2) The flexor and the extensor of the forearm showed synergistic activities under isotonic contraction, but under isometric contraction the flexor only acted. 3) Muscular activity during the isotonic contraction slightly increased compared with the isometric contraction. 4) EMGs and integrated EMGs were somewhat enhanced as the load increased, but there was no significant difference between 5 and 10 pounds load.

The aim of the present study was to determine the influence of vibration frequency and muscle contraction level at constant vibration displacement amplitudes on a commonly observed motor response elicited by local vibratory stimulation, i.e., the Tonic Vibration Reflex (TVR). Vibration was applied to the distal tendons of the hand flexor muscles. Changes in activity of the hand flexor and extensor muscles were analyzed as a function of the vibration frequency (40-200 Hz), displacement amplitude(200.mu.m and 300.mu.m peak-to-peak), and the initial contraction level of the flexor muscles (0%, 10%, and 20% of the maximal voluntary contraction: MVC). The main results indicate that the TVR increases with vibration frequency up to 100-150 Hz and decreases beyond, and the TVR attains its maximum at 10% MVC. It appears that high frequency vibration tends to induce less muscle/tendon stress. Such a result is of particular importance for the design of handheld vibrating tools.
Ossification of the Achilles tendon is a rare condition that is characterized by the presence of an ossific mass contained within the substance of the tendon. The ossified mass is usually asymptomatic but when it grows large and painful, it deteriorates the function of Achilles tendon. We report a case of ossification of the Achilles tendon, which was successfully treated by removal of the ossific mass and proximal flexor hallucis longus (FHL) tendon transfer.

PURPOSE: The Purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in the thickness of Sternocleidomastoid muscle(SCM) and deep cervical flexor muscle(DCF) through CranioCervical Flexion Exercise(CCFEx) Using Sling. METHODS: Subjects were randomly allocated two group: control group (n=21) without neck pain, experimental group (n=17) with pain. Muscle thickness was measured using CranioCervical Flexion Test(CCFT) and ultrasonography before or after intervention. RESULTS: In experimental group, compared with muscle thickness of exercise before, SCM thickness rate of change was slightly decreased according to pressure increased after exercise(p<.05). CONCLUSION: The results of this study showed that CCFEx using sling is effective for SCM and DCF of choric neck pain patients.

The flexor digitorum accessorius longus (FDAL) is the most common accessory muscle found in the posterior compartment of the ankle area. The accessory muscle in this area such as the FDAL may be incidentally identified on magnetic resonance images (MRI). There are some case reports about the FDAL in cadaver researches. However, the MRI findings about the FDAL have been reported in a few cases. In this paper, we report a case of the FDAL incidentally identified on MRI with review of the literature about the FDAL.
The flexors and extensors of the knee joint are essential for maintaining body stability. The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between the isokinetic parameters of the knee flexor and extensor muscles and the function of the lower extremity muscles. Twenty-two healthy adults participated in this study. The time to peak torque (TTP), acceleration time (AT), and peak torque (PT) of the knee flexor and extensor muscles were measured. A 20m sprint, Sargent jump, one leg hop test, and side shuffle were measured to evaluate lower extremity function. The correlation between each variable was analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient. PT of the knee flexor showed a significant correlation with single leg hops and 6M hops in a single leg. PT of knee extensors was found to be significantly correlated with Sargent jumps and triple hops. Based on the results of this study, we suggest that the strength of the knee flexor and extensor muscles has the potential to be used to predict lower extremity function.

Purpose: Peritendinous adhesion is one of the most notorious complication after the flexor tendon injury. In this study, $Alloderm^{(R)}$(LifeCell Corp., Branchburg, N.J.), which is the decellularized human dermal analogue with its intact native basement membrane components, was used for the prevention of peritendinous adhesions following flexor tendon repair. Methods: Thirty New Zealand white male rabbits were divided equally into 3 groups. In all groups, the flexor digitorum profundus of the third finger of the right back foot was cut totally and repaired by modified Kessler suture technique. Following tendon repair, $Alloderm^{(R)}$ was wrapt around the repaired tendon in the first group and sodium hyaluronate gel was sprayed to the operation field in the second group. In the control group, no external material was applied. The right back foot were immobilized for 6 weeks to optimize the formation of adhesion ingrowth. After death, the third finger that repaired tendons and sheaths was removed en bloc. We checked range of motion. and studied histologically for all groups. Results: The experimental groups had better range of motion than the control group. We checked that the range of motion was 73.5 degrees in $Alloderm^{(R)}$ group, 55.9 degrees in the hyaluronic acid group, and 38.3 degrees in the control group. in the histological study, the experimental group had less adhesions compared with the control group. Conclusion: This study concludes that $Alloderm^{(R)}$ can decrease peritendinous adhesions following flexor tendon repairs in rabbits. We think the method could be used in clinical cases.
Purpose: This study was conducted in order to analyze the effect of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation lower extremity pattern on muscular strength and flexibility in an aquatic environment. Methods: Ten members of the experimental group and 10 members of the control group were randomly selected from 20 college students who are in their 20s. Bilateral symmetry pattern among proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation lower extremity patterns was applied in an aquatic environment in the experimental group three times per week for a period of six weeks, and a set consisted of 10 times, which was repeated 10 times. On the other hand, subjects in the control group did not receive any treatment while maintaining daily life. Muscular strength was measured using a dynamometer and electromyogram system for maximum voluntary isometric contraction of hip flexor, hip extensor, knee flexor, and knee extensor. Cervical flexibility was measured using cervical range of motion instrument for cervical flexion, rotation, and lateral flexion. Lumbar flexibility was measured using back range of motion instrument II for lumbar flexion. Results: For the experimental group, significance was observed for hip flexor, extensor, knee flexor, extensor, cervical flexion, rotation, lateral flexion, and lumbar flexion. For the control group, no significance was observed for any other variables except for cervical flexion. As a result of observation of difference between the two groups, relatively high significance was observed in the experimental group, compared with the control group. Conclusion: In conclusion, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation lower extremity pattern had a positive effect on muscular strength and flexibility in an aquatic environment.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the strength and endurance of the deep neck flexor muscles in individuals with work-related neck pain. Subjects consisted of two groups: twenty industrial workers with neck pain and twenty age-matched healthy subjects. To evaluate the strength and endurance of deep cervical flexors, maximum voluntary contractile strength (MVCS) and a sustained time at sub-maximal voluntary contractile strength (SMVCS) (80% and 50% of MVCS) were measured using a pressure biofeedback unit and a stop watch in supine. The MVCS of deep neck flexor muscles was 29.67${\pm}$4.56 in neck pain group and 54.27${\pm}$6.78㎜Hg in normal group. The sustained time at 80% SMVCS was 12.42${\pm}$2.64 seconds and 55.12${\pm}$12.76 seconds in the groups with and without neck pain. The sustained time at 50% SMVCS was 25.40±5.88 seconds and 109.70${\pm}$31.50 seconds in the groups with and without neck pain. The difference of the lower jaw position was 16.75${\pm}$3.57㎜ and 23.03${\pm}$2.51㎜. The MVCS, endurance at the two sub-maximal levels and the difference of the lower jaw position were significantly greater in the group without neck pain than with neck pain (p$<$0.05). The findings indicate that the maximal strength and endurance of the deep neck flexors were decreased in the workers with neck pain compared to those without neck pain. Therefore, it is necessary to include strengthening and endurance exercises of the deep neck flexor muscles in therapeutic program of work-related musculoskeletal disorders involving neck pain.
One fresh equine cadaver (two forelimbs) and five non-lamed thoroughbreds (ten sound forelimbs) were examined ultrasonographically through 5.0 MHz linear array transducer with a stand-off pad in palmar pastern region. The normal transverse ultrasonographic images of the superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT), deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT), straight sesamoidean ligament (SSL), oblique sesamoidean ligament (OSL), and medium scutum could be identified at the region. The mean $\pm$ SD (min.$\sim$max. $mm^2$) of SDFT cross-sectional areas at P1A, P1B, P1C in the region were $110.00{\pm}5.38$ ($100{\sim}128$), $100.00{\pm}5.02$ ($90{\sim}111$), $114.00{\pm}3.33$ ($104{\sim}124$), respectively. The mean $\pm$ SD (min.$\sim$max. $mm^2$) of DDFT cross-sectional areas at each phalanx (P1A, P1B, P1C, P2A, P2B) were $136.00{\pm}4.83$ ($125{\sim}147$), $94.00{\pm}5.43$ ($85{\sim}108$), $99.00{\pm}4.87$ ($90{\sim}111$), $115.00{\pm}3.67$ ($108{\sim}124$), $135.00{\pm}3.65$ ($125{\sim}145$), respectively. The mean ratio of SDFT of P1B to DDFT was 0.74, 1.06, 1.01, 0.87, 0.74 at P1A, P1B, P1C, P2A, P2B, respectively.
