  • In this study, we have investigated a process of preparation of white and black pigment particles by physical or chemical coating with functionalized polymers for the flexible low-cost paper-like display. This polymer coating provided <1 ${\mu}m$ monodispersed particles changed their dispersion, density, optical and electrical properties.

  • The present study aims at characterizing and modeling the anisotropic creep behavior of coated textile membrane, a class of flexible textile composites that are used for moderate span enclosures (roofs and air-halls). The objective is to develop a creep model for predicting the lifetime of coated textile membrane. Uniaxial creep tests were conducted on three off-axis coupon specimens to obtain the directional creep compliance. A potential with three parameters is shown to be adequate for modeling the anisotropic creep behavior of coated textile membrane. Furthermore, a possibility of predicting the creep deformation of coated textile membrane in a multi-axial stress state is discussed using the three-parameter potential.

  • Photoaligning polymers usually possess "sofe" surface, containing flexible groups and provide relatively small anchoring energy($W<10^{-2}$ erg $cm^{-2}$). In this case field-induced reorientation of director on the aligning surface is essential. We have shown that surface director reorientation can modify the aligning surface and result in gliding of the axis of easy orientation of LC. this phenomena together with adsorption/desorption of ions in electric field cause strong sticking effect in LCDs photoaligning materials. We proposed a method of decreasing of the sticking effect based on irradiation of the photoaligning surface by an unpolarized light.

  • Many nanomaterials are being harnessed as critical components in various systems for biomedical applications including diagnosis, imaging, and drug delivery. Those systems necessitate biocompatibility and low toxcity within effective dose range while achieving enough efficacy. Even though many nanomaterials enjoy successful demonstrations in bioapplications, lack of biocompatibility and high cytotoxicity often become hurdles for practical bioapplications. On the other hand, it is important to achieve enough efficiency based on chemically well-defined systems with efforts to understand mechanism at molecular level. Here, we developvarious biocompatible nanomaterials based on simple procedure using dextran as both reducing agent and surface coating. Dextran is one of the popular biocompatible polymers that have been used for drug delivery and biosensors. Dextran coated nanomaterials showed excellent colloidal stability, flexible surface chemistry for conjugation of bioactive molecules and low cytotoxicity with successful demonstrations in various bioapplications.

  • Filamentous actin (F-actin) is a two stranded long helix that performs structural function in eukaryotic cells. F-actin had been assembled from Alexa-labeled G-actin and had been confined in microchannel. The fluctuation of single filaments was observed by fluorescence optical microscopy. We measured Tangent-tangent Correlation Function G(s) (where s is the distance along the contour of the chain), which tells us the confining wall effect of wormlike semi-flexible polymers as well as the flexural rigidity, such as persistence length.

  • Conductive polymers(CPs) are a relatively new class of organic materials displaying as their foremost property a high conductivity combined with very light weight, flexibility and reasonably facile processability[1]. Due to their high conductivity/weight ratio, they have recently evinced much interest in potential application as EMI shielding screens, coatings or jackets for flexible conductors, rechargeable batteries and as possible substitutes for metallic conductors or semiconductors in wide variety of electrical devices[2]. • Novel flexible terpolymers with a reactive moiety were synthesized by coordination polymerization with a metallocene catalyst and a cocatalyst system. C2-symmetric rac-Et(Ind)2ZrCl2 and tri-iso-butylaluminum/dimethylanilinium tetrakis (pentafluorophenyl) borate were employed as the catalyst and cocatalyst, respectively. We synthesized reactive terpolymers consisting of ethylene, a high α-olefin content (1-hexene, 1-octene, 1-decene, and 1-dodecene), and divinylbenzene. The structure and composition of the terpolymers were characterized by 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. The catalytic activity, polymer yield, molecular weight, and molecular weight distribution were measured as functions of the chain length and high content of α-olefins. Furthermore, the thermal properties and crystallinity of the terpolymers were determined by differential scanning calorimetry and wide-angle X-ray scattering.

  • Various enaminonitriles-terminated reactive polymer precursors containing rigid aromatic and flexible alkyl units were prepared from the corresponding diamines and 1-chloro-1-phenyl-2,2-dicyanoethene (1). All the enaminonitriles-terminated precursors were characterized by spectroscopies and elemental analysis. They were highly soluble in DMF and NMP, and partially soluble in common organic solvents such as THF and acetone. They showed a large exotherm around 350 ℃ attributable to the thermal polymerization by crosslinking of the dicyanovinyl group. Upon heating the precursors, heat-resistant and insoluble network polymers were obtained. Thermogravimetric analyses of the precursors containing rigid aromatic moiety exhibited thermal stability with a 10% weight loss around 420-480 ℃ and 75-88% residual weight at 500 ℃ under nitrogen.

  • A topological theory is introduced to extend Tsenoglou's theory to polymer blends having temporary and permanent networks composed of multicomponent polymers which have miscible and flexible chains. The topological theory may estimate the values of free elastic energy, the molecular weight between entanglements, and the equilibrium shear moduli, and it may establish more correctly the topological relations among these physical quantities. Through such introduction of the topological theory, there can be topologically analyzed the mixing law for the rubbery plateau modulus of a fluid polymer blend, and there can be considered the topological relationship to the equilibrium modulus of an interpenetrating polymer network containing trapped entanglements and dangling segments. The theoretically predictive values are compared and show good agreement with the experimental data for several miscible polymer blends.

  • Since 2010, polymer-based magnetoelectric (ME) composites have been developed with detailed investigations of multiferroic properties such as piezoelectric, magnetostrictive, and magnetoelectric, etc. In particular, as a piezoelectric polymer, poly(vinylidene fluoride) and its co-polymers have been widely used in ME composites for energy harvesting, health monitoring, environment treatment, and bio-medical applications. In this study, main research trend and selected experimental results of polymer-based ME composites are briefly reviewed with respect to composite structure as well as application field. A conclusion was drawn that the polymer-based ME composites would be feasible as flexible devices or functional membranes in the near future.
