  • The aim of this paper is to clarify the structural compliance of the constrained flexible manipulator and to develop the force control algorithm by using the compliance of the links. The proposed structural compliance control consists of the position control to utilize a flexible manipulator model (considering the compensation for the elastic deflection of links) and the passive force control to utilize the rigid manipulator model (without considering the compensation for the elastic deflection of links). We present the experimental results for the case when applying the only position control, and when applying the structural compliance control. Finally, a comparison between these results is presented to show the performance of our method.

  • This paper shows the development of flexible force sensor using the fiber Bragg grating. This force sensor consists of a Bragg grating fiber and flexible silicone rubber (DC184, Dow corning co. Ltd). This sensor does not have special structure to maximize the deflection or elongation, but have good sensitivity and very flexible characteristics. In addition, this sensor has the immunity to the electro magnetic field and can be multiplexed easily, which is inherited from the characteristics of fiber Bragg grating sensor. In the future, this sensor can be utilized the tactile sensor system minimizing the sensor size and developing the fabrication method.

  • In this study, active vibration control for a flexible cantilever beam was performed by using the intelligent control technique. The intelligent control method which integrating the back propagation algorithm and the fuzzy inference technique was proposed and its performance was examined. The proposed control algorithm for the flexible cantilever beam was verified via computer simulation of active vibration control. Furthermore, the control system and its efficiency were investigated via experiments on active vibration control by the intelligent control technique without a digital signal processing device.

  • In this paper, an experimental study on the robust input shaping for control of the residual vibration of flexible structures has been investigated. Two approaches has been used for the robustness of input shaping: the first method is to increase the number of impulses, and the other includes an EI shaper using vector diagram. The input case designed by the application of the above methods has been applied to a control problem involving residual vibration of a rotating hub with two flexible appendages. It has been found by a series of experiments that the input shaper designed in this paper works well for the residual vibration control of the flexible structure.

  • This paper presents a LMI(linear matrix inequality)-based fuzzy approach of modeling and active vibration control of geometrically nonlinear flexible plates with piezoelectric materials as actuators and sensors. The large-amplitude vibration characteristics and dynamic partial differential equation of a piezoelectric flexible rectangular thin plate structure are obtained by using generalized Fourier series and numerical integral. Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model is employed to approximate the nonlinear structural system, which combines the fuzzy inference rule with the local linear state space model. A robust fuzzy dynamic output feedback control law based on the T-S fuzzy model is designed by the parallel distributed compensation (PDC) technique, and stability analysis and disturbance rejection problems are guaranteed by LMI method. The simulation result shows that the fuzzy dynamic output feedback controller based on a two-rule T-S fuzzy model performs well, and the vibration of plate structure with geometrical nonlinearity is suppressed, which is less complex in computation and can be practically implemented.

  • A high-performance low-voltage graphene field-effect transistor (FED array was fabricated on a flexible polymer substrate using solution-processable, high-capacitance ion gel gate dielectrics. The high capacitance of the ion gel, which originated from the formation of an electric double layer under the application of a gate voltage, yielded a high on-current and low voltage operation below 3 V. The graphene FETs fabricated on the plastic substrates showed a hole and electron mobility of 203 and 91 $cm^2/Vs$, respectively, at a drain bias of - I V. Moreover, ion gel gated graphene FETs on the plastic substrates exhibited remarkably good mechanical flexibility. This method represents a significant step in the application of graphene to flexible and stretchable electronics.

  • The stability of the flexible rotor mounted on circumferentially grooved floating ring journal bearings was investigated theoretically and experimentally. The floating ring journal bearing was analyzed by using JFO reformation boundary condition. The flexible shaft was analyzed by the finite element method based on Rayleigh beam theory. It was found that the measured ring speed agrees well with the theoretical results. The instability of the system due to not only the outer film but also the inner film of the bearing could be predicted by the theory which allows negative vapor pressure. The tendency that reducing the supply pressure of lubricant stabilizes the system was observed both experimentally and theoretically.

  • Experiment on the modal balancing of a flexible rotor supported on two kinds of fluid film bearings is performed to verify the modal balancing theory. The fluid film bearings are a tilting pad bearing and a two axial grooved journal bearing. One is inherently stable, but the other is not. The experimental result shows that the modal balancing method is effective for balancing of a high speed flexible rotor system. Besides, the critical speeds and mode shapes measured experimentally are in good coincidence with the results of rotordynamic analysis. Oil whip, which is the instability phenomenon due to fluid film force, is also observed during the experiment.

  • We proposed an enhanced substrate-assembling technique using adhesive patterned spacers for flexible liquid crystal displays (LCDs). The negative photoresister was used for the rigid columnar spacers and the strong substrate-bonding agent. The proposed technique is expected to be a good candidate for manufacturing method of flexible LCDs.

The gel type mixture of agarose and UV curable epoxy developed to obtain tight bonding ability and enhanced electro-optical characteristic simultaneously. This technique can be used to roll-to-roll process for fabricating the flexible LCDs.
