Mitigation of motions of tall buildings with specific examples of recent applications

  • Flexible structures may experience excessive levels of vibration under the action of wind, adversely affecting serviceability and occupant comfort. To ensure the functional performance of a structure, various design modifications are possible, ranging from alternative structural systems to the utilization of passive and active control devices. This paper presents an overview of state-of-the-art measures that reduce the structural response of buildings, including a summary of recent work in aerodynamic tailoring and a discussion of auxiliary damping devices for mitigating the wind-induced motion of structures. In addition, some discussion of the application of such devices to improve structural resistance to seismic events is also presented, concluding with detailed examples of the application of auxiliary damping devices in Australia, Canada, China, Japan, and the United States.

  • The current focus of development in industrial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is integration of CFD into Computer-Aided product development, geometrical optimisation, robust design and similar. On the other hand, in CFD research aims to extend the boundaries of practical engineering use in "non-traditional" areas. Requirements of computational flexibility and code integration are contradictory: a change of coding paradigm, with object orientation, library components, equation mimicking is proposed as a way forward. This paper describes OpenFOAM, a C++ object oriented library for Computational Continuum Mechanics (CCM) developed by the author. Efficient and flexible implementation of complex physical models is achieved by mimicking the form of partial differential equation in software, with code functionality provided in library form. Open Source deployment and development model allows the user to achieve desired versatility in physical modeling without the sacrifice of complex geometry support and execution efficiency.

Validation of Loads Analysis for a Slowed Rotor at High Advance Ratios

  • This work conducts a validation study for loads analysis of the UH-60A slowed rotor at high advance ratios. The nonlinear flexible multibody dynamics analysis code, DYMORE II, is used with a freewake model for the rotorcraft comprehensive analysis. Wind tunnel test data of airloads and structural loads of a full-scale UH-60A slowed rotor are used for this validation study. This analysis predicts well the thrust reversal phenomenon at the advance ratio of 1.0. The section airloads such as normal forces and pitching moments and the oscillatory blade structural moments in this analysis are compared well or moderately with the measured data, although the higher harmonics components of blade torsion moments are not captured well. This validation study assesses the prediction accuracy and investigates the unique aeromechanics characteristics of a slowed rotor at high advance ratio.

융합기술 개발을 위한 중소기업 간 협업모형 제안 (Study on the Cooperation Model for Fusion-Technology Development in SMEs)

  • Industry convergence is the inexorable trend, which has become a fundamental concept to understand the industrial dynamics and to develop business strategies. However, most of the previous studies on convergence have dealt with the issues at the macro-level (technology- or industry-level), little attention has been paid to the analysis of convergence at the micro level (firm-level). Recognizing that firms are the principal agents that develop fusion technologies, it is encouraged to help firms to work together for technology convergence. Therefore, this research proposes a collaboration model for SMEs, since SMEs tend to have novel ideas and are flexible enough to make fusion-technology. To do this, we conducted a survey for Korean SMEs and analyzed their successful cases of collaboration, which was used as a basis to develop the model. The research results will help develop strategy or policy to promote the collaboration between SMEs and ultimately to make a fusion-technology.

  • This paper presents a new approach to the design of neural control system using digital signal processors in order to improve the precision and robustness. Robotic manipulators have become increasingly important in the field of flexible automation. High speed and high-precision trajectory tracking are indispensable capabilities for their versatile application. The need to meet demanding control requirement in increasingly complex dynamical control systems under significant uncertainties, leads toward design of intelligent manipulation robots. The TMS320C31 is used in implementing real time neural control to provide an enhanced motion control for robotic manipulators. In this control scheme, the networks introduced are neural nets with dynamic neurons, whose dynamics are distributed over all the network nodes.

Design of a Software-Based GPS RF Simulator

  • In this paper, a low-cost, flexible GPS simulator based on USRP is designed as a general-purpose software wireless front-end. The simulator consists of a software GPS signal generator and a USRP-based RF transmitter. The simulator supports various scenarios including specified reception time, quantization bit level, I/Q data types, IF frequency, sampling frequency, SNR, ionospheric delay and user dynamics. The generated GPS RF signal is verified using the spectrum analyzer and off-the-shelf GNSS receivers such as U-blox M8T. The experimental results shows that the difference between generated and real live signal is ignorable. It is expected that designed GPS simulator can be used to GNSS signal design, receiver design and signal processing algorithms such as anti-jamming.

  • Wetlands are a critical component of the global carbon cycle and are essential in mitigating climate change. Accurately quantifying wetland carbon emissions is crucial for understanding and predicting the impact of wetlands on the global carbon budget. The uncertainty quantifying carbon in wetlands may comes from the ecosystem's hydrological, biochemical, and microbiological variability. The Community Land Model is a sophisticated and flexible land surface model that offers several configuration options such as energy and water fluxes, vegetation dynamics, and biogeochemical cycling, necessitating careful consideration for the alternative configurations before model implementation to develop a practical model framework. We conducted a systematic literature review, analyzing the alternatives, focusing on the carbon stock pools configurations and the parameters with significant sensitivity for carbon quantification in wetlands. In addition, we evaluated the feasibility and availability of in situ observation data necessary for validating the different alternatives. This analysis identified the most suitable option for our study site, the Binbong Wetland, in Korea.

유연다물체동적해석을 이용한 무도상교량 침목패드의 최적 강성 산정 (Optimum Stiffness of the Sleeper Pad on an Open-Deck Steel Railway Bridge using Flexible Multibody Dynamic Analysis)

  • 레일장대화는 무도상교량의 소음, 진동, 충격 등의 문제점을 해결할 수 있는 경제적인 방안 중 하나이며, 최근 연동식 침목고정장치를 이용한 SSF 공법이 개발된 바 있다. 이 연구에서는 연동식 침목고정장치 적용 시 레일 높이 조정 및 열차 통과 시의 충격 흡수를 목적으로 교량침목 하부에 삽입되는 침목패드의 최적 연직강성을 결정하는 과정을 제시하였다. 침목패드의 최적 연직강성 결정을 위하여 관련 기존 기준을 검토하였으며, 유연다물체동적해석을 통하여 침목패드의 연직강성 변화에 따른 주행안전성, 승차감 및 궤도의 안전성에 대한 지표들과 교량 응답 변화를 검토하였다. 유연다물체동적해석은 상용프로그램인 ABAQUS와 VI-Rail을 이용하여 수행하였다. 수치해석은 30m 상로판형교에 대한 교량모델을 이용하여 수행하였으며, 침목패드의 연직강성이 7.5kN/mm ~ 240kN/mm로 변화할 때 ITX 새마을, KTX 및 화차 통과 시의 응답을 산정하였다. 수치해석에 적용된 궤도구성품 조건에서 침목패드의 최적 강성은 100kN/mm로 산정되었다.

강재 분기기의 진동을 고려한 자기부상열차 부상안정성 연구 (Study on the Levitation Stability of Maglev Vehicle considering the Vibration of Steel Switch Track)

  • 일반적으로 열차분야에서 분기기 시스템은 안전성과 직접적으로 연관되기 때문에 높은 신뢰성이 요구된다. 특히 자기부상열차의 분기기 시스템은 대차가 궤도를 감싸는 구조적 특징으로, 고가궤도 전체가 움직여야 한다. 이러한 이유로 자기부상열차의 분기기는 강 재질로 설계되었다. 강 거더의 분기기는 콘크리트 거더에 비하여 진동측면뿐만 아니라 거더의 처짐에도 취약하다. 그러므로 자기부상열차가 유연한 분기기 위를 통과 할 때, 부상안정성 예측이 매우 중요하다. 본 논문의 목표는 자기부상열차와 분기기 거더의 연성된 동역학 해석모델을 개발하고, 공진예측 및 차량의 부상안정성 예측에 있다. 이를 위해서 차량의 3차원 다물체 동역학 모델을 개발 하였고, 분기기 거더와 모달중첩법을 이용한 연성모델링을 수행하였다. 개발된 해석모델은 실측 실험과 비교를 통해서 해석모델의 타당성을 검증하였다.

  • 최근 화석연료의 고갈과 환경오염으로 인하여 해상풍력에너지와 같은 신재생 에너지에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 범용 동역학해석 프로그램인 MSC.ADAMS를 이용하여 공력하중 및 전기 발전기 토오크를 결정하기 위한 테브난(Thevenin) 방정식이 고려된 해상풍력발전기의 다물체 동역학 해석 기법을 검토하였다. 해석대상으로 고려한 시스템은 5MW급 해상풍력발전기이며, 3개의 블레이드가 수평축 방향에서 역풍을 받아 전기를 생산하는 수평축 풍력발전 형태이다. 블레이드에 작용하는 공력하중은 블레이드 요소 모멘텀 이론을 기반으로 일반화된 동적 웨이크를 고려할 수 있도록 개발된 AeroDyn 프로그램으로부터 산출하였다. 해상풍력발전기의 주요 연결부에서의 동적하중과 토오크 특성이 실제 현상과 유사하게 산출될 수 있도록 하기 위하여, 다물체 동역학 모델 상에 블레이드와 타워는 실제 구조 특성치를 고려한 유연체 모델링을 적용하였다.
