Low-temperature Deposition of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 Absorber using Na2S Underlayer (Na2S 하부층을 이용한 Cu(In,Ga)Se2 광흡수층의 저온증착 및 Cu(In,Ga)Se2 박막태양전지에의 응용)

  • High-efficiency in $Cu(In,Ga)Se_2$ (CIGS) solar cells were usually achieved on soda-lime glass substrates due to Na incorporation that reduces deep-level defects. However, this supply of sodium from sodalime glass to CIGS through Mo back electrode could be limited at low deposition temperature. Na content could be more precisely controlled by supplying Na from known amount of an outside source. For the purpose, an $Na_2S$ layer was deposited on Mo electrode prior to CIGS film deposition and supplied to CIGS during CIGS film. With the $Na_2S$ underlayer a more uniform component distribution was possible at $350^{\circ}C$ and efficiency was improved compared to the cell without $Na_2S$ layer. With more precise control of bulk and surface component profile, CIGS film can be deposited at low temperature and could be useful for flexible CIGS solar cells.

  • CIS(CuInSe2)계 화합물 태양전지는 높은 광흡수계수와 열적 안정성으로 고효율 태양전지 제조가 가능하여 태양전지용 광흡수층으로 매우 이상적이다. 미국 NREL에서는 이러한 CIGS 태양전지를 Co-evaporation 방법으로 제조 20%이상의 에너지 변환 효율을 달성하였다고 보고하였다. CIGS 태양전지의 경우 기존의 유리 기판 대신 유연한 철강 기판을 사용해 태양전지를 flexible하게 제조 할 수 있다는 장점이 있다. 이러한 flexible 태양전지의 경우 기존의 rigid 태양전지의 적용분야 뿐만 아니라 BIPV, 선박, 장난감, 군용, 자동차등 더욱더 많은 분야에 활용이 가능하다. 하지만 flexible 태양전지에 사용되는 철강기판의 경우 기존의 유리 기판인 SLG에 함유되어 있는 Na이 첨가되어 있지 않아 별도의 Na 첨가가 필요하다. Na은 CIGS 광흡수층의 결정을 증가 시키며 태양전지의 전기적 특성을 향상시킨다. 이러한 Na이 없는 경우 효율이 감소한다. 따라서 flexible 태양전지 개발을 위해서는 Na 첨가에 대한 연구가 필수적이다. 본 연구에서는 Na의 증착 순서를 변화시켜서 CIGS 증착 전, 동시증착, CIGS 증착 후로 나누어 CIGS 광흡수층 결정성의 변화를 알아보고자 한다. Na의 두께를 5nm에서 500nm 까지 단계 별로 나누어 실험을 실시하였다. 이때 CIGS 광흡수층은 미국의 NREL과 같은 3 stage 방식을 이용하였다. 1st stage의 시간은 15분으로 고정하였으며 기판온도는 약 $300^{\circ}C$로 고정 하였다. 2nd stage는 실시간 온도 감지 장치를 이용하여 Cu와 In+Ga의 조성비가 1:1이 되는 시간을 기준으로 Cu의 조성을 30%더 높게 조절하였으며 기판 온도는 약 $640^{\circ}C$로 고정 후 실험을 실시하였다. 3rd stage의 경우 Cu poor 조성으로 조절하기 위해 모든 조건을 10분으로 고정 후 실험을 실시하였다. 기판은 Na의 영향만을 비교하기위하여 Na이 첨가되어있지 않은 corning glass를 사용하였다. 후면 전극으로 약 $1{\mu}m$ 두께의 Mo을 DC Sputtering 방법을 이용하여 증착 하였다. 각각의 Na 두께에 따른 CIGS 광흡수층의 특성을 분석하기 위해 FE-SEM, XRD 분석을 실시하였다.

Enhancement of n-i-p flexible microcrystalline silicon thin film solar cell efficiency through improved light trapping (Light trapping 개선을 통한 n-i-p 플렉서블 미세결정질 실리콘 박막 태양전지의 효율 향상)

  • Stainless Steel의 유연한 기판을 사용하여 ZnO:Al/Ag의 후면전극에서 Ag 증착 실험조건 변화를 통해서 light trapping을 개선한 n-i-p 구조의 플렉서블 미세결정질 실리콘 박막 태양전지를 제작하였다. 실험 방법으로 마그네트론 스퍼터를 사용하여 Stainless Steel 기판 위에 ZnO:Al/Ag를 증착하여 후면전극으로 사용되는 back reflector를 제작하였으며 그 위에 미세결정질 실리콘 박막을 증착하였다. Back reflector에서 Ag 박막의 증착 온도가 증가할수록 표면결정 성장으로 roughness가 증가하여 반사도를 증가하였다. 또한, Ag 박막 증착 두께와 압력 변화에 따른 광학적 특성변화를 Atomic Force Microscope(AFM), Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM),UV-visible-nIR spectrometry로 조사하여 최적의 조건을 찾았으며 개선된 back reflector의 특성이 n-i-p 구조의 플렉서블 미세결정질 실리콘 박막 태양전지에 적용하여 light trapping의 증가가 태양전지에서 광학적인 특성 변화 및 효율 향상에 영향을 주는지 Photo IV와 EQE(External Quantum Efficiency)를 통하여 조사하였다.

  • The process of manufacturing printed electronics using printing technology is attracting attention because its process cost is lower than that of the conventional semiconductor process. This technology, which offers both a lower cost and higher productivity, can be applied in the production of organic TFT (thin film transistor), solar cell, RFID(radio frequency identification) tag, printed battery, E-paper, touch screen panel, black matrix for LCD(liquid crystal display), flexible display, and so forth. In general, in order to implement printed electronics, narrow width and gap printing, registration of multi-layer printing by several printing units, and printing accuracy of under $20\;{\mu}m$ are all required. These electronic products require high precision to the degree of tens of microns - in a large area with flexible material, and mass productivity at low cost. As such, the roll-to-roll printing process is attracting attention as a mass production system for these printed electronic devices. For the commercialization of this process, two basic electronic ink technologies, such as conductive ink and polymers, and printing equipment have to be developed. Therefore, this paper addressed basis design and test to develop fine patterning equipment employing the roll-to-roll printing equipment and electronic ink.

Cantilever Type Idler Roller in Roll-to-roll Process for Printed Electronics (인쇄전자용 롤투롤 공정의 외팔보 형식 아이들 롤러)

  • Roll-to-roll process is an emerging mass production method for printed and flexible electronics such as touch screen panel, RFID tag, thin film solar cell, and flexible display due to its high throughput. High precision in printing and coating is required to apply functional materials onto substrate. For such reason, every part of the roll-to-roll equipment needs to be precisely fabricated and to retain its precision under regular operation. In this article, the precision of cantilever type idler roller and a novel method to mitigate its deflection under web tension loading are discussed and the method is verified using both the numerical and the experimental works. The proposed method improves the structural rigidity of cantilever type roller whose advantages, such as low capital cost and high web path configurability, are maintained.

Characteristics of ITO/Ag-Pd-Cu/ITO Multilayer Electrodes for High Efficiency Organic Solar Cells

  • We investigated characteristics of ITO/Ag-Pd-Cu (APC)/ITO multilayer electrodes prepared by direct current magnetron sputtering for use as an anode in organic solar cells (OSCs). To optimize electrical properties of ITO/APC/ITO multilayer, we fabricated the ITO/APC/ITO multilayer at a fixed ITO thickness of 30 nm as a function of APC thickness. Compare to the surface of Ag layer on ITO, the APC had a smooth surface morphology. At optimized APC thickness of 12 nm, the ITO/APC/ITO multilayer exhibited a sheet resistance of $6{\Omega}/square$ and optical transmittance of 84.15% at a wavelength of 550 nm which is comparable to conventional ITO/Ag/ITO multilayer. However, the APC-based ITO multilayer showed a higher average transmittance in a visible region than the Ag-based ITO multilayer. The higher average transmittance of ITO/APC/ITO multilayer indicated the multilayer is suitable anode for organic solar cells with P3HT:PCBM active layer. OSCs fabricated on the optimized ITO/ACP/ITO multilayer exhibited a better performance with a fill factor of 64.815%, a short circuit current of $8.107mA/cm^2$, an open circuit voltage of 0.59 V, and power conversion efficiency (3.101%) than OSC with ITO/Ag/ITO multilayer (2.8%).

Light Scattering Effect of Incorporated PVP/Ag Nanoparticles on the Performance of Small-Molecule Organic Solar Cells

  • Small-molecule organic photovoltaic cells have recently attracted growing attention due to their potential for the low-cost fabrication of flexible and lightweight solar modules. The PVP/Ag nanoparticles were synthesized by the reaction of poly vinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and silver nitrate at $150^{\circ}C$. In the reaction, the size of the nanoparticles was controlled by relative mole fractions between PVP and Ag. The PVP/Ag nanoparticles with various sizes were then spin coated on the patterned ITO glass prior to the deposition of the PEDOT:PSS hole transport layer. The scattering of the incident light caused by these incorporated nanoparticles resulted in an increase in the path length of the light through the active layer and hence the enhancement of the light absorption. This scattering effect increased as the size of the nanoparticles increased, but it was offset by the decrease in total transmittance caused by the non-transparent nanoparticles. As a result, the maximum power conversion efficiency, 0.96% which was the value enhanced by 14% compared to the cell without incorporation of nanoparticles, was obtained when the mole fraction of PVP:Ag was 24:1 and the size of the nanoparticles was 20~40 nm.

  • Many types of robot systems are used in the mass production line of thin film solar cells and flat panel displays. There are some issues such as the deflection and the vibration of the end-effector because robots handle large and heavy substrates at high speed. Heavy payload and high speed cause much vibration because the end-effector (fork) is made of carbon fiber reinforced polymer because of its light weightiness and sufficient stiffness. This study performs a dynamic simulation of an 8.5G solar cell substrate handling robot, including rigid and flexible bodies and a vibration controller. The fifth polynomial trajectory and the zero vibration derivative input shaping algorithm are applied. The vibration reduction is also proved in the experiments.

Influence of surface morphology and thickness of molecular thin films on the performance of SubPc-$C_{60}$ photovoltaic devices

  • Over the past decades, organic semiconductors have been investigated intensely for their potential in a wide range of optoelectronic device applications since the organic materials have advantages for very light, flexible and low cost device fabrications. In this study, we fabricated small-molecule organic solar cells (OSCs) based on chloro[subphthalocyaninato]boron(III) (SubPc) as an electron donor and $C_{60}$ as an electron acceptor material. Recently SubPc, a cone-shaped molecule with $14{\pi}$-electrons in its aromatic system, has attracted growing attention in small-molecule OSC applications as an electron-donating material for its greater open-circuit voltage (VOC), extinction coefficient and dielectric constant compared to conventional planar metal phthalocyanines. In spite of the power conversion efficiency (PCE) enhancement of small-molecule OSC using SubPc and $C_{60}$, however, the study on the interface between donor-acceptor heterojunction of this system is limited. In this work, SubPc thin films at various thicknesses were deposited by organic molecular beam deposition (OMBD) and the evolution of surface morphology was observed using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). We also investigated the influence of film thickness and surface morphology on the PCE of small-molecule OSC devices.

  • The screen printing is a process that is widely used in manufacturing process of various fields such as flexible devices, portable multimedia devices, OLED, and the solar cell. The screen printing method has been studied as a method for forming the high precision micro-pattern, making the low-cost manufacturing process and reducing cost through improvement of productivity. It is applicable to deposit and forming the pillars which are one of the core element for comprising vacuum glazing. In this paper, by using the paste of the glass frit base, the screen printing was performed. We analyzed the effect for the printing process to deposit pillar paste on the screen printing parameters by the factorial experimental design. The polynomial predicting the volume of the printed supporting pillars was drawn by using screen printing.
