This paper reports the fluid flow and heat transfer around a module cooled by forced air flow generated by a piezoelectric(PZT) cooling fan. The fluids are locally accelerated by a flexible PZT fan which deflects inside a fluid transport system of comparatively simple structure mounted on a PCB in a parallel-plate channel(450${\times}$80${\times}$700㎣). Input voltages of 20-100V and a resonance frequency of 23㎐ were used to vibrate the cooling fan. Input power to the module was 4W. The fluid flow around the module was visualized by using PIV system. The temperature distributions around a heated module were visualized by using liquid crystal film(LCF). The cooling effect using a PZT fan was independent of the vent area ratios at the channel inlet and was similar to the forced convection cooling. We found that the flow type was Y-shape and the cooling effect was increased by the wake generated by a piezoelectric cooling fan.

Copper films were prepared by using ECR-MOCVD(Electron Cyclotron Resonance Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition) coupled with a DC bias system. The DC bias is connected to the electrode which placed 1∼3cm above the polymer substrate. The pulse electrical field around the electrode attracts the positive charged copper ions generated from the dissociation of copper precursor, $Cu(hfac)_2$, under ECR plasma. Condensation of supersaturated copper ions in the space between the electrode and substrate, makes it possible to deposit copper film on the polymer substrate even at room temperature. In this study, optimization of the electrode configuration was carried out in order to obtain the uniform films. The uniformity of the deposited films were closely related to the parameters of electrode geometry such as electrode shape, thickness, grid size and the spacing between electrodes. The most uniform copper film was observed with the electrode that enabled uniform electrical field distribution across the whole dimension of electrode.

This paper presents a method by which multiple holes of ultra small size can be punched simultaneously. Silicon wafers were used to fabricate punching die. Workpiece used in the present investigation were the rolled pure copper of $3{\mu}m$ in thickness and CP titanium of $1.5{\mu}m$ in thickness. The metal foils were punched with the dies and arrays of circular and rectangular holes were made. The diameter of holes ranges from $2-10{\mu}m$. The process set-up is similar to that of the flexible rubber pad forming or Guerin process. Arrays of holes were punched successfully in one step forming. The punched holes were examined in terms of their dimensions, surface qualities, and potential defect. The effects of the die hole dimension on ultra small size hole formation of the thin foil were discussed. The optimum process condition such as proper die shape and diameter-thickness ratio (d/t) were also discussed. The results in this paper show that the present method can be successfully applied to the fabrication of ultra small size hole array in a one step operation.

The long neck flange is used to connect piping arrangements where the lap joint is applied. Generally, the component can be manufactured by welding, but this method is both time and cost intensive. Embrittlement at the heat affected zones was also considered. A spinning method developed to improve the manufacturing process and solve the problems of welding. The flange area of the long neck flange can be formed by changing the direction of the metal flow, from axial to radial, while maintaining pressure by using an outer mold and a lap roller. A modified process was additionally developed using a round roller rather than the outer mold. In this modification, the round roller can form the shape of all sizes of long neck flange. Using these flexible methodologies, the cost to prepare outer molds and the time to install and remove the molds can be significantly reduced.

An analytical method for the free vibration of a flexible rectangular plate in contact with water is developed by the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The plate clamped along the edges is partially contacted with water at both sides. It is assumed that the contained water is incompressible and inviscid. The wet mode shape of the plate is assumed as a combination of the dry mode shapes of a clamped beam. The liquid motion is described by using the liquid displacement potential and determined by using the compatibility conditions along the liquid interface with the plate. Minimizing the Rayleigh quotient based on the energy conservation gives an eigenvalue problem. It is found that the theoretical results can predict excellently the fluid-coupled natural frequencies comparing with the finite element analysis result.
This paper presents a new approach to predict the racking load-displacement response of plasterboard clad walls found in Australian light-framed residential structures under monotonic racking load. The method is based on a closed-form mathematical model, described herein as the 'Modularised' Closed-Form Mathematical model or MCFM model. The model considers the non-linear behaviour of the connections between the plasterboard cladding and frame. Furthermore, the model is flexible as it enables incorporation of different nailing patterns for the cladding. Another feature of this model is that the shape of stud deformation is not assumed to be a specific function, but it is computed based on the strain energy approach to take account of the actual load deformation characteristics of particular walls. Verification of the model against the results obtained from a detailed Finite Element (FE) model is also reported. Very good agreement between the closed form solution and that of the FE model was achieved.
In order to reduce vibration or to control shape of structures made of metal or composites, piezoelectric materials have been extensively used since their discovery in 1880's. A recent trend is also seen to apply piezoelectric materials to flexible structures made of rubber-like materials. In this paper a non-linear finite element model using updated Lagrangian (UL) approach has been developed for static analysis of rubber-elastic material with surface-bonded piezoelectric patches. A compressible stain energy function has been used for modeling the rubber as hyperelastic material. For formulation of the nonlinear finite element model a twenty-node brick element is used. Four degrees of freedom u, v and w and electrical potential ${\varphi}$ per node are considered as the field variables. PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) patches are applied as sensors/actuators or sensors and actuators. The present model has been applied to bimorph PVDF cantilever beam to validate the formulation. It is then applied to study the smart rubber components under different boundary and loading conditions. The results predicted by the present formulation are compared with the analytical solutions as well as the available published results. Some results are given as new ones as no published solutions available in the literatures to the best of the authors' knowledge.

This paper describes the analysis of dynamic characteristics and prediction of the stiffness for the joint between structural members. In the process of deriving the governing equations, the stiffness values responsible for the moment and shear force were modelled by using linear and torsional springs in the middle of a clamped-clamped beam. The sensitivities of the natural frequency and modal assurance criterion were investigated as a function of the dimensionless linear and torsional spring stiffness. The reliability of the predictions for the linear and torsional stiffness values was verified by the inverse computations of the stiffness matrix. The predictive and exact theoretical stiffness values were compared for the stiffness element in the finite element formulation, and their results show an excellent correlation. It is strongly anticipated that although the proposed methodology is currently limited to the analytical utilization, it will provide a useful tool to estimate unknown joint stiffness values based on the experimental natural frequency and mode shape.
Smart materials capable of changing their characteristics in response to stimuli such as light, heat, pH, and electric and magnetic fields are promising for application to flexible electronics, soft robotics, and biomedicine. Compared with conventional rigid materials, these materials are typically composed of soft materials that improve the biocompatibility and allow for large and dynamic deformations in response to external environmental stimuli. Among them, smart magnetic materials are attracting immense attention owing to their fast response, remote actuation, and wide penetration range under various conditions. In this review, we report the material design and fabrication of smart magnetic materials. Furthermore, we focus on recent advances in their typical applications, namely, soft magnetic actuators, sensors for self-assembly, object manipulation, shape transformation, multimodal robot actuation, and tactile sensing.

An optimal design of a simple beam-shaped flexure hinge mount supporting an optical mirror is presented. An optical mirror assembly is an opto-mechanically coupled system as the optical and mechanical behaviors interact. This side-supporting mount is flexible in the radial direction and rigid for the remaining degrees of freedom to support the mirror without transferring thermal load. Through thermo-elastic, optical and eigenvalue analysis, opto-mechanical performance was predicted to establish the objective functions for optimization. The key design parameters for this flexure are the thickness and length. To find the optimal values of design parameters, response surface analysis was performed using the design of experiment based on nested FCD. Optimal design candidates were derived from the response surface analysis, and the optimal design shape was confirmed through Opto-mechanical performance validation analysis.
