  • Objective The purpose of this study is to investigate recent clinical studies on the effect of herbal medicine in flat warts in China, and to seek better methods to treat and study for flat warts in Korea. Methods The clinical studies from the CAJ (China Academic Journal) of CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure) by key words '扁平疣' in recent 5 years (From January 2011 to December 2015) were searched. Results 16 articles were selected from 122 clinical studies, and analyzed. The most commonly used herbs were Isatidis Radix (板藍根), Equiseti Hiemalis Herba (木賊), Cyperi Rhizoma (香附子), Carthami Flos (紅花), Glycyrrhizae Radix (甘草) etc., and the articles all showed effectiveness over the control group. Conclusion Based on analyzing the studies, herbal medicine has shown effective in flat wart. This study may be useful not only as clinical data, but also to determine better treatment going forward.

  • Warts, or verrucae, are benign epithelial proliferations of the skin and mucosa caused by infection with human papillomaviruses (HPV). It is now recognized that there are many different HPV types. Especially type3 is most frequently observed in flat wart. Other types, such as type2, 10, 14, 27, 28, 29, 38, and 41 are rarely encounted in flat wart. We describe here a simple and economic method for detection and identification of epidermodysplasia verruciformis-associated HPV. The method is based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification and restriction analysis. The method has been developed with cloned HPV DNA and DNA from clinical samples. Clinical samples are from either frozen tissue or paraffin-embedded tissue. Genomic fragments were obtained from two different HPV types (3 and 10). The amplification fragments were identified by a form of miniature fingerprinting, with a set of restriction enzymes that gave a unique digestion pattern for each HPV type. We have tested 74 clinical samples. Only type3 among these clinical samples is detected, and one sample is involved in neither type3 nor type10.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to review Korean and Western medical papers on wart treatment. Methods : We searched papers published until 2015 via OASIS and KISS with the keyword "wart". In particular, OASIS is for searching Korean medicine and KISS for Western medicine articles. We exclude results that are inconsistent with established criteria. Results : The total number of papers on wart treatment in korean medicine was 10, and it includes 7 case studies, 2 original research article and 1 statistical analysis. The ones in Western medicine was 42 and it consists of 27 origianl research articles, 10 case studies, 4 comparative studies and 1 clinical study. 'Flat wart' accounts for 50.0% and it made up the biggest portion of the type of warts in Korean medicine, while the percentage of 'various warts' was 40.5% in Western medicine. 'Herbal medicine' accounts for 10(100.0%) and it made up the biggest portion of the the type of treatment in Korean medicine, while the percentage of 'cryo therapy' was 7(16.7%) in Western medicine. The various types of treatment are more introduced on Western than on Korean medicine papers. However, therapy suggested by Western medicine has more side effects than the one introduced by Korean medicine. Conclusions : We hope this article would encourage further research on treatment for warts in Korean medicine.
